Book excerpt: The results of a fifteen man-month conceptual design study for a Manned Underwater Station are presented, conforming to the requirement of a 30-day mission for 5 men at 6000 feet. The station is self-supporting when emplaced by using an isotope heat source with turbo-electric power generation, and a life support system to provide comfortable one-atmosphere environment. The pressure hull is toroidal in shape, forty feet in overall diameter with a 10-foot tube diameter. HY-140 steel is recommended for construction of the internally ring-stiffened hull. The concept provides a stable platform with maximum viewing of the bottom in the limited visibility in the deep ocean. For bottom locations with sufficient bearing strength, the hemispherical foundation and toroidal hull act as a ball-and socket joint with unique leveling capability. Where extremely low bearing strength materials are encountered, modifications are made to distribute the load on the bottom. Additional toroidal modules, mating in a vertical stack, permit expanding the station for larger operational missions. Emergency power and life support provisions are included for a 5-day period beyond the 30-day mission requirement. However, with the recommended power system and the electro-mechanical life support equipment there is no reason why the mission time cannot be extended to 90 days when personnel interchange is undertaken. Crews may be exchanged by using small submersibles which have a mating capability with bottomed submarines. (Author).

Book excerpt: Large undersea installations with a shirt-sleeve environment have existed under the continental shelves for many decades. The technology now exists, using off-the-shelf petroleum, mining, submarine, and nuclear equipment, to establish permanent manned installations within the sea floor that do not have any air umbilical or other connection with the land or water surface, yet maintain a normal one-atmosphere environment within. This presentation briefly reviews the past and present in-the-sea-floor mineral industry. The methods presently practical for direct access to and from permanent in-the-sea-floor installations are outlined, and the specific operations and types of tools indicated. Initial power requirements and cost estimates are included. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book investigates Reliability-based Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (RBMDO) theory and its application in the design of deep manned submersibles (DMSs). Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is an effective design method for large engineering systems like aircraft, warships, and satellites, which require designers and engineers from various disciplines to cooperate with each other. MDO can be used to handle the conflicts that arise between these disciplines, and focuses on the optimal design of the system as a whole. However, it can also push designs to the brink of failure. In order to keep the system balanced, Reliability-based Design (RBD) must be incorporated into MDO. Consequently, new algorithms and methods have to be developed for RBMDO theory. This book provides an essential overview of MDO, RBD, and RBMDO and subsequently introduces key algorithms and methods by means of case analyses. In closing, it introduces readers to the design of DMSs and applies RBMDO methods to the design of the manned hull and the general concept design. The book is intended for all students and researchers who are interested in system design theory, and for engineers working on large, complex engineering systems.

Book excerpt: The support of subsea oil and gas production operations involves the use of many underwater work systems. Divers can be used for support tasks in water depths to 300 m, but at more extreme depths operations become restrictively expensive and the efficiency of task performance is reduced. Remote controlled unmanned vehicles can replace the diver to a limited extent, performing inspection and maintenance tasks and supporting drilling opera tions. Operations in deepwaters performed by remote controlled vehicles and one man submersible vehicles, such as JIM and WASP, are more cost effective than the use of divers. The areas of operation of the more complex multi-manned submersibles and bells are today generally restricted to their use for diver lock-out operations, manned intervention to subsea enclosures and the deployment of other underwater work systems. Oil and gas exploration activity is being undertaken in progres sively deeper waters. In the North Sea, Shell have discovered a large gas accumulation off the Norwegian coast in 323 m water depth and B. P. have made oil finds West of the Shetlands in 500 m and West of Eire in 450 m. Exploration drilling is today being carried out in many areas of the world in water depths greater than 1000 m, i. e. Western Mediterranean, Offshore Argentina, Offshore Western Australia and in the Niger Basin, West Africa. The existing discoveries of Shell and B. P.

Environmental and logistics constraints are defined and alternatives to the baseline system are suggested. An outline specification for equipment is included. The baseline system utilizes a Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) suitably modified for Station resupply. The operation is thus performed only once in 30 days for a 5 man Station. If, when the Station is actually deployed, a DSRV is not available, other methods utilizing diving bell type structures may be employed. Of the three candidate site areas examined, San Clemente, Hawaii and Kauai Islands, Hawaii is most advantageous based on environmental and bathymetric considerations. Under the constraints of the study a single 9-foot diameter sphere has been chosen for an access chamber. Other configurations have advantages, especially that of utilizing the upper portion of the reactor cylinder for main access. (Author).

Book excerpt: With a renewed focus on the Asia-Pacific region, the United States Navy will increasingly rely on high-endurance unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) to support successful operations in a challenging threat environment. Undoubtedly, this naval strategy will necessitate versatile UUV systems that fulfill a broad spectrum of customer-generated requirements. This thesis presents a unique approach to the conceptual design process for UUVs, thereby allowing strategic decision-makers to rapidly explore a given design space. The proposed MA TLAB-based conceptual design program features five primary modules: a mission module, a hull module, a resistance module, a battery module, and a pressure vessel module. The final concept design results from an iterative process that considers the displacement, interior volume, and exterior volume of the total UUV system. To validate the proposed design algorithm, the author applied the best practices of modern naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering, systems engineering, and submersible design. Model test data and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software were used to validate the empirical equations selected for the resistance module. The pressure vessel module, including a genetic algorithm to generate viable scantlings, was validated by a consideration of manually optimized pressure vessel designs. Ultimately, this thesis demonstrates the sufficiency, reliability, and versatility of the proposed conceptual design program for UUVs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early stage ship design decisions continue to be a challenge for naval architects and engineers. The complex interactions between the different elements of the ship and the broad spectrum of disciplines required in ship design make it difficult to fully realize the effects and limitations early decisions place on design flexibility. Naval ship design has primarily focused on using point based design methods that do not necessarily produce the most cost effective, innovative, and high quality designs. Recognizing these shortcomings, U.S Navy design is exploring the use of Set Based Design (SBD) principles and methodology in designing the fleet for the 21st century. Existing research has shown the merits of SBD in other industries; however, research on the use of SBD in naval design does not exist. The thesis explores how to execute SBD in light of the recent restructuring of the U.S. Navy acquisition process calling for the use of SBD in pre-preliminary design. This is undertaken using the knowledge gained from exploration of the Ship-to-Shore Connector (SSC) program, the first use of SBD in a new start acquisition program. The thesis concludes by applying the derived information to an early stage submarine concept design. This effort focused on how to develop submarine design parameters and exploration of how to create and reduce integrated concepts.
