El estudio parte de dos hipótesis, desarrolladas en los capítulos segundoy tercero: la incorporación de los medios de comunicación estadounidenses ala elite del poder y el apoyo del poder político a la expansión de esta industria através de políticas de comunicación similares. A lo largo de todo el siglo XX se puede observar cómo las bases liberales del sistema se han ido corrompiendopor la injerencia del sistema económico. Por ello el capitulo cuarto aborda unacuestión básica para la investigación: ¿se legisla a favor del interés general o afavor de los intereses empresariales? Para responder a esa pregunta analizamos la evolución de las leyes sobre comunicación y la actuación de laComisión Federal de Comunicaciones.Por último, el capítulo quinto presenta un análisis histórico del procesode concentración multimedia en Estados Unidos, desde las empresas familiares de medios de comunicación a los gigantescos conglomeradosmultimedia actuales (AOL-Time Warner, Disney, Viacom). El número decompañías que controlan el sector se ha ido reduciendo progresivamente y losdiferentes sectores han ido convergiendo en las mismas corporaciones. La investigación concluye planteando la dependencia de la publicidad delos medios de comunicación de masas, la concentración y los interesesinterconectados, la homogeneización de los contenidos, la espectacularizacióne industrialización de la cultura, la eliminación del pluralismo y la pérdida del concepto de servicio público.
