Book Synopsis Communication and Agreement Abstractions for Fault-Tolerant Asynchronous Distributed Systems by : Michel Raynal

This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding distributed computing is not an easy task. This is due to the many facets of uncertainty one has to cope with and master in order to produce correct distributed software. Considering the uncertainty created by asynchrony and process crash failures in the context of message-passing systems, the book focuses on the main abstractions that one has to understand and master in order to be able to produce software with guaranteed properties. These fundamental abstractions are communication abstractions that allow the processes to communicate consistently (namely the register abstraction and the reliable broadcast abstraction), and the consensus agreement abstractions that allows them to cooperate despite failures. As they give a precise meaning to the words "communicate" and "agree" despite asynchrony and failures, these abstractions allow distributed programs to be designed with properties that can be stated and proved. Impossibility results are associated with these abstractions. Hence, in order to circumvent these impossibilities, the book relies on the failure detector approach, and, consequently, that approach to fault-tolerance is central to the book. Table of Contents: List of Figures / The Atomic Register Abstraction / Implementing an Atomic Register in a Crash-Prone Asynchronous System / The Uniform Reliable Broadcast Abstraction / Uniform Reliable Broadcast Abstraction Despite Unreliable Channels / The Consensus Abstraction / Consensus Algorithms for Asynchronous Systems Enriched with Various Failure Detectors / Constructing Failure Detectors

Download or read book Communicating Processes and Fault Tolerance: a Shared Memory Multiprocessor Experience written by Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The concept of backward recovery is now well established as a means of restoring a consistent state of a fault tolerant system should some faults occur. In this paper, we consider a system of communicating processes mapped onto a multilevel execution support. A shared memory multiprocessor machine is assumed. Our interest is in tolerating the hardware faults that may occur during the execution of a concurrent computation. The machine provides a hardware backward recovery protocol based on a specialized memory device which tracks dependencies between the processors accessing shared data residing in memory. The transparency provided by the protocol is discussed considering successively the models of computation at the various levels of abstraction of the execution support."

This book was released on 2001 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concurrency is an integral part of everyday life. The concept is so ingrained in our existence that we benefit from it without realizing. When faced with a taxing problem, we automatically involve others to solve it more easily. Such concurrent solutions to a complex problem may, however, not be quite straightforward and communication becomes crucial to ensure the successful solution of the problem.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responsive Computer Systems: Steps Towards Fault-Tolerant Real-Time Systems provides an extensive treatment of the most important issues in the design of modern Responsive Computer Systems. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive model that allows critical design issues to be treated in ways that more traditional disciplines of computer research have inhibited. It breaks important ground in the development of a fruitful, modern perspective on computer systems as they are currently developing and as they may be expected to develop over the next decade. Audience: An interesting and important road map to some of the most important emerging issues in computing, suitable as a secondary text for graduate level courses on responsive computer systems and as a reference for industrial practitioners.

Download or read book Structural Failure Models for Fault-Tolerant Distributed Computing written by Timo Warns and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-28 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timo Warns has developed tractable fault models that, while being non-probabilistic, are accurate for dependent and propagating faults. Using seminal problems such as consensus and constructing coteries, he demonstrates how the new models can be used to design and evaluate effective and efficient means of fault tolerance.

Book Synopsis Communicating Process Architectures 2004 by : Ian East
Download or read book Communicating Process Architectures 2004 written by Ian East and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communicating Process Architecture (CPA) describes an approach to system development that is process-oriented. It makes no great distinction between hardware and software. It has a major root in the theory of Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP). However, the underlying theory is not limited to CSP. The importance of mobility of both channel and process within a network sees integration with ideas from the ð-calculus. Other formalisms are also exploited, such as BSP and MPI. The focus is on sound methods for the engineering of significant concurrent systems, including those that are distributed (across the Internet or within a single chip) and/or software-scheduled on a single execution unit. Traditionally, at CPA, the emphasis has been on theory and practice - developing and applying tools based upon CSP and related theories to build high-integrity systems of significant size. In particular, interest focuses on achieving scalability and security against error. The development of Java, C, and C++, libraries to facilitate secure concurrent programming using 'mainstream' languages has allowed CPA to continue and proliferate. This work continues in support of the engineering of distributed applications. Recently, there has been greater reference to theory and its more direct application to programming systems and languages. In this volume the formal CSP is very well presented. The papers provide a healthy mixture of the academic and commercial, software and hardware, application and infrastructure, which reflects the nature of the discipline.

Book Synopsis Formal Techniques in Real-Time and Fault-Tolerant Systems by : Jan Vytopil
Download or read book Formal Techniques in Real-Time and Fault-Tolerant Systems written by Jan Vytopil and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-12-11 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents state-of-the-art research results in the area of formal methods for real-time and fault-tolerant systems. The papers consider problems and solutions in safety-critical system design and examine how wellthe use of formal techniques for design, analysis and verification serves in relating theory to practical realities. The book contains papers on real-time and fault-tolerance issues. Formal logic, process algebra, and action/event models are applied: - to specify and model qualitative and quantitative real-time and fault-tolerant behavior, - to analyze timeliness requirements and consequences of faulthypotheses, - to verify protocols and program code, - to formulate formal frameworks for development of real-time and fault-tolerant systems, - to formulate semantics of languages. The integration and cross-fertilization of real-time and fault-tolerance issues have brought newinsights in recent years, and these are presented in this book.

Download or read book Fault Tolerance written by Peter A. Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of a new version of any book is a daunting task, as many authors will recognise. In the field of computer science, the task is made even more daunting by the speed with which the subject and its supporting technology move forward. Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1981 much research has been conducted, and many papers have been written, on the subject of fault tolerance. Our aim then was to present for the first time the principles of fault tolerance together with current practice to illustrate those principles. We believe that the principles have (so far) stood the test of time and are as appropriate today as they were in 1981. Much work on the practical applications of fault tolerance has been undertaken, and techniques have been developed for ever more complex situations, such as those required for distributed systems. Nevertheless, the basic principles remain the same.
