The application of NMR to carbohydrates and related compounds has opened up a several new possibilities. The present day dissemination of NMR instruments renders it possible for a larger group of glyco-scientists to record and interpret their own NMR spectra. A review of the potency of the techniques in this field is therforeappropriate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbohydrate recognition by proteins, such as lectins and other (bio)molecules, can be essential for many biological functions. Interest has arisen due to potential protein and drug design and future bioengineering applications. A quantitative measurement of carbohydrate-protein interaction is thus important for the full characterization of sugar recognition. Here, we focus on the aspect of utilizing computer simulations and biophysical models to evaluate the strength and specificity of carbohydrate recognition in this review. With increasing computational resources, better algorithms and refined modeling parameters, using state-of-the-art supercomputers to calculate the strength of the interaction between molecules has become increasingly mainstream. We review the current state of this technique and its successful applications for studying protein-sugar interactions in recent years.

Book excerpt: Provided here are the latest techniques of NMR as applied to the study of proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acids. The first chapters are devoted to an introduction to NMR and parameters related to molecular structure and molecular interactions. NMR experiments from basic 1D to 2D, 3D and 4D, used in combination with isotopically labelled molecules, are described and a general strategy is presented for biomacromolecular structure determination. Subsequent chapters deal with more advanced principles and techniques and their applications to structural and dynamic processes involving biomacromolecules in solution. Advanced results on peptide, protein, oligosaccharide and nucleic acid structure and recognition are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to be published on the subject of fructans, Science and Technology of Fructans provides a thorough treatment of this carbohydrate from recent research in a broad range of disciplines to applications in crop, animal and food science. This volume includes a detailed glossary and offers a terminology system that can be used by all fructan scientists. It also reviews modern analytical methods and Japanese and European technologies for commercial production and use of fructans. Topics covered by contributors to Science and Technology of Fructans include chemical structure and characteristics, metabolism in microorganisms and plants, fructans in crop production and preservation and in human and animal diets, and production and utilization of microbial fructans and inulin. A chapter by J.S.D. Bacon and J. Edelman, who established the modern biochemistry of fructans in the mid-20th century, includes personal reminiscences of the early years of fructan research. Since this volume crosses all disciplinary boundaries of fructan research, Science and Technology of Fructans is indispensable to biochemists; carbohydrate chemists; analytical chemists; and crop, horticultural, animal, and food scientists. It will also be useful reading for nutritionists, agricultural extension workers, and members of the food industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In much of biology, the search for understanding the relation between structure and function is now taking place at the macromolecular level. Proteins, nucleic acids, and polysaccharides are macromolecule--polymers formed from families of simpler subunits. Because of their size and complexity, the polymers are capable of both inter- and intramolecular interactions. These interactions confer upon the polymers distinctive three-dimensional shapes. These tertiary configurations, in turn, determine the function of the macromolecule. Computers have become so inextricably involved in empirical studies of three-dimensional macromolecular structure that mathematical modeling, or theory, and experimental approaches are interrelated aspects of a single enterprise.
