Book Synopsis Multimedia Interface Design in Education by : Alistair D.N. Edwards
Download or read book Multimedia Interface Design in Education written by Alistair D.N. Edwards and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What the book is about This book is about the theory and practice of the use of multimedia, multimodal interfaces for leaming. Yet it is not about technology as such, at least in the sense that the authors do not subscribe to the idea that one should do something just because it is technologically possible. 'Multimedia' has been adopted in some commercial quarters to mean little more than a computer with some form of audio ar (more usually) video attachment. This is a trend which ought to be resisted, as exemplified by the material in this book. Rather than merely using a new technology 'because it is there', there is a need to examine how people leam and eommunicate, and to study diverse ways in which computers ean harness text, sounds, speech, images, moving pietures, gestures, touch, etc. , to promote effective human leaming. We need to identify which media, in whieh combinations, using what mappings of domain to representation, are appropriate far which educational purposes . . The word 'multimodal ' in the title underlies this perspective. The intention is to focus attention less on the technology and more on how to strueture different kinds of information via different sensory channels in order to yield the best possible quality of communication and educational interaction. (Though the reader should refer to Chapter 1 for a discussion of the use of the word 'multimodal' . ) Historically there was little problem.
Book Synopsis Mathematics Versus the National Curriculum by : Paul Dowling
Download or read book Mathematics Versus the National Curriculum written by Paul Dowling and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1990 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of the National Curriculum has imposed restraints on the way subjects are taught. This book argues that, in the case of mathematics, the limitations have effectively robbed the subject of its true meaning and identity.
Book Synopsis Sorts and Types in Artificial Intelligence by : Ulrich Hedtstück
Download or read book Sorts and Types in Artificial Intelligence written by Ulrich Hedtstück and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1990-07-12 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to reflect the substantial re- search done in Artificial Intelligence on sorts and types. The main contributions come from knowledge representation and theorem proving and important impulses come from the "application areas", i.e. natural language (understanding) systems, computational linguistics, and logic programming. The workshop brought together researchers from logic, theoretical computer science, theorem proving, knowledge representation, linguistics, logic programming and qualitative reasoning.
Book Synopsis Teaching & Researching: Computer-Assisted Language Learning by : Ken Beatty
Download or read book Teaching & Researching: Computer-Assisted Language Learning written by Ken Beatty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers play a crucial and rapidly evolving role in education, particularly in the area of language learning. Far from being a tool mimicking a textbook or teacher, Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has the power to transform language learning through the pioneering application of innovative research and practices. Technological innovation creates opportunities to revisit old ideas, conduct new research and challenge established beliefs, meaning that the field is constantly undergoing change. This fully revised second edition brings teachers and researchers up-to-date by offering: A comprehensive overview of CALL and current research issues Step-by-step instructions on conducting research projects in CALL Extensive resources in the form of contacts, websites and free software references A glossary of terms related to CALL Closely linked to other branches of study such as autonomy in language learning and computer science, CALL is at the cutting edge of current research directions. This book is essential reading for all teachers and researchers interested in using CALL to make language learning a richer, more productive and more enjoyable task. Ken Beatty has taught at colleges and universities in Canada, Asia and the Middle East. His publications include more than 100 textbooks for learning English as a Second Language, as well as various websites, CD-ROMs and educational videos.

Book Synopsis A Collection of Test Problems for Constrained Global Optimization Algorithms by : Christodoulos A. Floudas
Download or read book A Collection of Test Problems for Constrained Global Optimization Algorithms written by Christodoulos A. Floudas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1990-09-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant research activity has occurred in the area of global optimization in recent years. Many new theoretical, algorithmic, and computational contributions have resulted. Despite the major importance of test problems for researchers, there has been a lack of representative nonconvex test problems for constrained global optimization algorithms. This book is motivated by the scarcity of global optimization test problems and represents the first systematic collection of test problems for evaluating and testing constrained global optimization algorithms. This collection includes problems arising in a variety of engineering applications, and test problems from published computational reports.

Book Synopsis Automata, Languages and Programming by : Michael S. Paterson
Download or read book Automata, Languages and Programming written by Michael S. Paterson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1990 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In subvolume 27C1 magnetic and related properties of binary lanthanide oxides have been compiled. This subvolume covers data obtained since 1980 and can therefore be regarded as supplement to volume III/12c. While in the previous volume the majority of magnetic data was obtained either from magnetometric measurements or from neutron diffraction, for the present data the main emphasis is devoted to 'related' properties without which, however, the understanding of classical magnetic properties is impossible. A second part 27C2 will deal with binary oxides of the actinide elements.
Book Synopsis Programming Language Implementation and Logic Programming by : Pierre Deransart
Download or read book Programming Language Implementation and Logic Programming written by Pierre Deransart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1990-08-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of the papers accepted for presentation at the second international workshop on Programming Language Implementation and Logic Programming (PLILP '90) held in Linköping, Sweden, August 20-22, 1990. The aim of the workshop was to identify concepts and techniques used both in implementation of programming languages, regardless of the underlying programming paradigm, and in logic programming. The intention was to bring together researchers working in these fields. The volume includes 26 selected papers falling into two categories. Papers in the first category present certain ideas from the point of view of a particular class of programming languages, or even a particular language. The ideas presented seem to be applicable in other classes of languages. Papers in the second category directly address the problem of integration of various programming paradigms. The proceedings of the predecessor workshop PLILP '88, held in Orléans, France, May 16-18, 1988, are available as Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vol. 348.
