Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latest developments of urban hydrology and hydraulic design procedures for storm water management.Drainage planning is an approach that integrates both local and regional efforts to identify drainage conveyance and storage facilities based on hydrologic optimization and cost minimization individually and collectively. In general, the first six chapters cover the hydrologic procedures for rainfall and runoff predictions, and the next 12 chapters focus on hydraulic designs of urban channel, culvert, street inlet, sewer drain, detention basin, retention basin, infiltration basin, low impact designs, and storm water modeling techniques by various routing methods.Hydrology analyses are lengthy in calculation and repetitive in procedure. As a result, Excel Spreadsheet is the most useful and handy tool for hydraulic and hydrologic designs. This book includes 18 sets of spreadsheets developed for 18 subjects. With these spreadsheets, it is easy for the reader to conduct sensitivity tests. Many of the design methods documented in this book have been adopted as the recommended design procedure by Denver, Las Vegas, and Sacramento metropolitan areas in the United States. Based on these methods, there are many design computer models that have been developed and supported by the Denver metro governments for stormwater design purposes.

This collection contains 29 papers that identify and assemble information on recent applications of mini- and microcomputer technology to problems in urban stormwater and flood management. Instrumentation and data management are reviewed with respect to watershed management and flood forecasting. Computer applications of hydrologic modeling are reported. Hydraulics and water quality models using microcomputers and programmable calculators are presented and applied to urban flooding and runoff and river plume models. Real-time control is reviewed in application to urban runoff forecasting, flood forecasting, and reservoir operation. Implications for the future are discussed, covering software, expert systems and interactive processing.

Book excerpt: A two-dimensional horizontal finite element numerical model (RMA-2) was applied to a 15 mile (24 km) river channel-floodplain reach in West Germany. Previous applications of such models have been restricted to much smaller scales. The results indicate that finite element schemes may successfully estimate river stage in large scale floodplain applications. Computed stage hydrographs compared well with observed data using loss coefficients within expected ranges. Two-dimensional flow models have been applied to certain classes of river channel problems. Applications have included detailed analyses of flow patterns near structures such as bridges and floodplains. In all these problems the scale of interest has been small, e.g. reaches of river a few river widths long. Many estuary studies have been done that were of large scale; some of these utilized a hybrid (numerical plus physical) modeling technique. In a review of the application of finite element methods to river channels, Samuels reported that the river channel was resolved separately from the floodplain in only two studies. Missing in previous work is attention to large scale floodplain modeling. The work reported in this paper focuses on the feasibility and accuracy of applying a two-dimensional flow model to a large floodplain. Traditional floodplain studies have used semi-empirical flow routing with steady, one-dimensional computation of water surface elevations to define inundated areas. Keywords: Army Corps of Engines. Book excerpt: This book presents quality technical papers representing the recent developments in the field of hydrological modeling, water management and water governance including practical applications. The content covers multifarious aspects of hydrology and water resources. It includes an application of the Hydrologic Modelling System (HEC-HMS) which has been successfully demonstrated for assessment of floods. The authors suggest an approach for the mitigation of cyclone disaster through a case study of the Phailin cyclone, whilst considering mitigating pluvial flooding, developing suitable management strategies. The book includes chapters discussing the detrended fluctuation analysis which is carried out for multifractal description of droughts. Drought characteristics are analyzed, and drought indices evolved for drought preparedness/management. The use of science in community planning under changing climate is also studied and discussed. The authors present and experimental study wherein hydraulic coefficients are calibrated by using vertical orifice. A cross flow hybrid hydrokinetic turbine is also evaluated for performance, and high head regulating radial gate designed and studied its sensitivity. This book will appeal to researchers, field practitioners, NGO and other Governmental as well as private water practitioners
