Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 8th International Conference on Computer Applications in Biotechnology (CAB8) was held in Quebec city, Canada, 24 - 27 June, 2001. The conference on Computer Applications in Biotechnology is organized every three years and aims to stimulate contacts between specialists active in academic research and industrial development in all major areas of biotechnology where computers are used to aid bioprocess design, supervision, diagnosis, operation, optimization and control. Essential bioprocess systems engineering aspects ranging from metabolic engineering to the control of bio-production plants are covered. CAB8 was supported by IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) and EFB (European Federation of Biotechnology). This conference series results from the merger of EFB (European Federation of Biotechnology), ICCAFT (International Conference on Computer Applications in Fermentation Technology) and IFAC Modelling and Control of Biotechnical Processes Symposia. The scientific program was arranged in several sessions as listed in this volume. Two poster sessions were held in which excellent papers were presented. In addition, three plenary lectures given by Prof. George Bastin (UCL, Belgium), Prof. Douglas Kilburn (UBC, Canada), and Prof. Benhard O. Palsson (UCSD, USA) reviewed the state of art in metabolic engineering modelling, interaction between molecular biology and bioprocess engineering, and influence of bioinformatics on metabolic engineering. In total, 79 papers of very high quality were presented with 76 papers appearing in this Proceedings volume.

Book excerpt: Computational Intelligence (CI) and Bioprocess are well-established research areas which have much to offer each other. Under the perspective of the CI area, Biop- cess can be considered a vast application area with a growing number of complex and challenging tasks to be dealt with, whose solutions can contribute to boosting the development of new intelligent techniques as well as to help the refinement and s- cialization of many of the already existing techniques. Under the perspective of the Bioprocess area, CI can be considered a useful repertoire of theories, methods and techniques that can contribute and offer interesting alternative approaches for solving many of its problems, particularly those hard to solve using conventional techniques. Although throughout the past years CI and Bioprocess areas have accumulated substantial specific knowledge and progress has been quick and with a high degree of success, we believe there is still a long way to go in order to use the potentialities of the available CI techniques and knowledge at their full extent, as tools for supporting problem solving in bioprocesses. One of the reasons is the fact that both areas have progressed steadily and have been continuously accumulating and refining specific knowledge; another reason is the high level of technical expertise demanded by each of them. The acquisition of technical skills, experience and good insights in either of the two areas is very demanding and a hard task to be accomplished by any professional.

Book excerpt: This volume deals with "Microbial Production of L-Amino Acids" and presents five comprehensive, expert and actual review articles on the modern production of Amino Acids by application of biotechnologically optimized microorganisms. This includes not only the modern techniques of enzyme, metabolic and transport engineering but also sophisticated analytical methods like metabolic flux analysis and subsequent pathway modeling. A general review about industrial processes of Amino Acid production provides a comprehensive overview about recent strain development as well as fermentation technologies. It was our special interest to focus the other articles on the most important and best selling amino acids on the world market i.e. L-Glutamate, L-Lysine and L-Threonine. The authors of this special volume have contributed significantly to the progress of Amino Acid biotechnology in the last decades and earn our special gratitude and admiration for their expert review articles.
