Book excerpt: The control of VTOL aircraft during transition from hover to forward flight is complicated due to the complex airframe-jet interaction. This investigation is concerned with mathematical modelling of asymmetric entrainment of lifting jets. The analysis is for two dimensional augmenters used on VTOL aircraft. The theoretical analysis of the lifting jets was limited to two dimensional curved jets in forward flight and out of ground effects. The aim was to predict the asymmetric entrainment rates of the curved jet along with its decay rate of the maximum velocity, and jet width growth rate. The results were obtained using turbulent curved free jet theory in conjunction with thin jet potential flow models to obtain the jet edge streamwise velocities. To test the effects of asymmetric entrainment the results were inserted in a thick jet potential flow computer program to obtain transition flight performance of a typical VTOL augmenter wing. A concurrent experimental study was undertaken to determine curved jet characteristics issuing from a two dimensional model. Maximum velocity decay, jet curvature, jet width, velocity and pressure profiles were measured. Good agreement has been obtained between the theoretical predicted and experimental measured curved jet characteristics. It was necessary to adjust the constant in the turbulent shear stress model to get this good agreement. Both experiments on the straight and curved jets at West Virginia University and by others have been compared with the theory.

Download or read book A Method for Estimating Jet Entrainment Effects on Nozzle-afterbody Drag written by R. C. Bauer and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly simplified analysis was used to derive an expression for estimating the induced afterbody drag caused by the turbulent jet-mixing process. The approach estimates the induced velocity produced by the jet-mixing process and uses small perturbation concepts to estimate the resulting pressure change on the afterbody surface from which the induced afterbody drag coefficient is obtained. The theoretical induced afterbody drag (entrainment drag) is combined with the maximum jet plume diameter blockage condition to form a correlation method that accounts for the effect of jet area ratio, exit angle, total temperature, molecular weight and ratio of specific heats for a given external stream Mach number, Reynolds number, and afterbody geometry. For verification, the correlation method was used to predict the drag of an H2 and C2H4 jet from the measured drag of an N2 jet and to predict the drag of a hot jet from the measured drag of a cold jet for both the 15- and 25-deg AGARD afterbody configurations in the Mach number range from 0.6 to 1.5. The average accuracy of the correlation method is better than 10% for both afterbody configurations and is 40 to 50 % more accurate than a correlation method based only on the blockage parameter. A brief numerical study indicates that the major parameter which correlates the jet entrainment effect is the product of the jet gas constant and total temperature. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report represents an effort to bring the complex phenomena associated with the artificial stimulation of jet boundaries into the realm of useful information for the fluidics engineer. The motivation for this study is twofold: first, the potential uses of this phenomenon as a means of control, and second, the evaluation of the effect of environmental noise on a fluidic device. The entrainment augmentation shown by a jet under the influence of harmonic disturbances in certain regimes of frequency and amplitude is considered in the light of the stability theory. The highlights of the theory are discussed along with some comments on vortex shedding. Evidence is shown that the main mechanism behind the additional entrainment in the excited jet is the acceleration of the rate of growth of the disturbances. Data is presented on the effect of sound on the entrainment and reattachment points in a Coanda flow for two different Reynolds numbers, for various values of amplitude and frequency of the disturbing sound. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two different sets of equations derived by Tollmein and Goertler for the two-dimensional, compressible, free jet mixing layer using the similarity assumption have been programmed for the IBM 7044, and solutions to a wide variety of problems carried out. These solutions demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the method, illustrate the effects of changes in Prandtl number and other parameters, compare results of the Tollmein and Goertler methods, and provide analytical curves used for evaluating the spreading parameter. A new correlation for spreading parameter is presented. A first-order correction for afterburning, assuming complete stoichiometric combustion at a flame front, allows the method to be applied to fuel-rich rocket exhausts. Boundary layer temperature, velocity, and concentration profiles calculated from the Tollmein equations for a number of cold and hot air jets and for rocket engines under various conditions are presented. The most interesting feature of a rocket engine exhaust is the continued high mixing layer temperature as the altitude increases.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made of the nozzle efficiency and entrainment rates of jets which were made to oscillate by fluidic means. The entrainment rates were determined using conventional pitot-static tubes which indicated significant increases for the oscillatory jet versus the steady jet. Also, work was started to verify these results using the Ricou-Spalding entrainment chamber.
