This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses of axisymmetric circular-arc boattail nozzles operating off-design at transonic Mach numbers have been completed. These computations span the very difficult transonic flight regime with shock-induced separations and strong adverse pressure gradients. External afterbody and internal nozzle pressure distributions computed with the Wind code are compared with experimental data. A range of turbulence models were examined, including the Explicit Algebraic Stress model. Computations have been completed at freestream Mach numbers of 0.9 and 1.2, and nozzle pressure ratios (NPR) of 4 and 6. Calculations completed with variable time-stepping (steady-state) did not converge to a true steady-state solution. Calculations obtained using constant timestepping (timeaccurate) indicate less variations in flow properties compared with steady-state solutions. This failure to converge to a steady-state solution was the result of using variable time-stepping with large-scale separations present in the flow. Nevertheless, time-averaged boattail surface pressure coefficient and internal nozzle pressures show reasonable agreement with experimental data. The SST turbulence model demonstrates the best overall agreement with experimental data. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to calculation methods of a converging-diverging nozzle used in propulsion and the high velocity flow. The algorithms and programs given in the book are intended to help engineers and students to design and calculate the nozzle parameters to provide optimal parameters for compressible supersonic flows. The present monograph is a tutorial (handbook) to calculate and determine the optimal parameters for converging-diverging nozzles provided supersonic flow. The main program consists from three main parts: programs for calculation the profile of the Contraction zone, EOD code for the flow in the Contraction zone, the program Rott-Crabtree for calculation the pressure gradient Pohlhausen parameter, the program for the aerodynamic design of axisymmetric and two-dimensional nozzles for supersonic and hypersonic wind tunnels, programs for solving laminar, transitional, or turbulent compressible boundary layer equations for two-dimensional and axisymmetric flow, and the program to obtain hypersonic boundary layer stability. The book is designed to be an instrument for students and scientists interested in study supersonic flow and high-temperature gas dynamics.

This book was released on 1952 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is given for the design of three-dimensional nozzles utilizing axisymmetric flow to produce uniform flow in a test chamber of arbitrary cross section. The method is applied to obtain the coordinates of a Mach number 10 nozzle for which a square test section is specified. Radial flow is used in a portion of the flow field to reduce the computation time. The remainder of the flow field is computed by the method of characteristics, but a simplified method is used near the axis. Tables which facilitate computation of the radial flow and the flow near the axis are included. Transition streamlines determined from the analytic expressions of Kuno Foelsch are compared with the streamlines obtained from the characteristic net of the Mach number 10 nozzle.

Book excerpt: An analytical method for including thermodynamic data with variable isentropic exponent in the method of characteristics as applied to the design of high-temperature exhaust nozzles has been obtained. Several bell-shaped nozzles have been designed with this method. A comparison of nozzle contours obtained by assuming identical boundary conditions and either frozen or equilibrium composition shows that significant differences occur. A computation of the variation of vacuum specific impulse with axial length showed that considerable nozzle length, and hence weight, can be eliminated without serious thrust penalties in nozzle designs that gradually expand the flow to uniform exit conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical procedure for computing the laminar flow-field in nozzles at throat Reynolds numbers of 300-3000 is described. Such nozzles are found in spacecraft position control thrusters, chemical lasers, and low density hypersonic wind-tunnels. A parabolic approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations (the boundary layer equations) is transformed to Von Mises form and solved numerically by a central difference method. The entire subsonic and supersonic flow-field is computed. No assumptions or approximations, other than those inherent in the flow equations, are involved. The method is of the direct type and the flow-field for any given nozzle geometry may, in principle, be computed. Examples are given comparing computed results with published experimental data.
