Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers assembled in this volume were presented at COMPSTAT 1988, the 8th biannual Symposium in Computational Statistics held under the auspices of the International Association for Statistical Computing. The current impact of computers on the theory and practice of statistics can be traced at many levels: on one level, the ubiquitous personal computer has made methods for explorative data analysis and display, rarely even described in conventional statistics textbooks, widely available. At another level, advances in computing power permit the development and application of statistical methods in ways that previously have been infeasible. Some of these methods, for example Bayesian methods, are deeply rooted in the philosophical basis of statistics, while others, for example dynamic graphics, present the classical statistical framework with quite novel perspectives. The contents of this volume provide a cross-section of current concerns and interests in computational statistics. A dominating topic is the application of artificial intelligence to statistics (and vice versa), where systems deserving the label" expert systems" are just beginning to emerge from the haze of good intentions with which they hitherto have been clouded. Other topics that are well represented include: nonparametric estimation, graphical techniques, algorithmic developments in all areas, projection pursuit and other computationally intensive methods. COMPSTAT symposia have been held biannually since 1974. This tradition has made COMPSTAT a major forum for advances in computational statistics with contributions from many countries in the world. Two new features have been introduced at COMPSTAT '88.

Book excerpt: When dealing with the design or with the application of any technical system, which is not quite simple and trivial, one has to face to the problem to determine the allowable de viations of the system functions and the optimal vector of system parameter tolerances. The need for the solution of this problem is stimulated with various serious economic and maite nance aspects, between them the tendency to reach the minimal production cost, the maximal system operation reliability are the most frequent. Suppose that we are dealing with an system S, consisting of N components represented by the system parame ters xi' i = 1, 2 . . . N, which are arranged in certain structu re so, that the K, system functions F k' k = 1, 2 . . . The set F depends besides the system structure also on the vector X = [Xi}N of the system parameters. Suppose, that the system structure is invariant.

Book excerpt: On May 27-31, 1985, a series of symposia was held at The University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, to celebrate the 70th birthday of Pro fessor V. M. Joshi. These symposia were chosen to reflect Professor Joshi's research interests as well as areas of expertise in statistical science among faculty in the Departments of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences, Economics, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Philosophy. From these symposia, the six volumes which comprise the "Joshi Festschrift" have arisen. The 117 articles in this work reflect the broad interests and high quality of research of those who attended our conference. We would like to thank all of the contributors for their superb cooperation in helping us to complete this project. Our deepest gratitude must go to the three people who have spent so much of their time in the past year typing these volumes: Jackie Bell, Lise Constant, and Sandy Tarnowski. This work has been printed from "camera ready" copy produced by our Vax 785 computer and QMS Lasergraphix printers, using the text processing software TEX. At the initiation of this project, we were neophytes in the use of this system. Thank you, Jackie, Lise, and Sandy, for having the persistence and dedication needed to complete this undertaking.

Book excerpt: The combination of faster, more advanced computers and more quantitatively oriented biomedical researchers has recently yielded new and more precise methods for the analysis of biomedical data. These better analyses have enhanced the conclusions that can be drawn from biomedical data, and they have changed the way that experiments are designed and performed. This volume, along with previous and forthcoming 'Computer Methods' volumes for the Methods in Enzymology serial, aims to inform biomedical researchers about recent applications of modern data analysis and simulation methods as applied to biomedical research.

The paradigms covered encompass artificial neural networks and fuzzy systems, including clustering versions, optimization and resampling methods, algebraic and Bayesian models, decision trees and regression splines. Thus, the focus is not just on intelligent techniques, although these constitute a major component; the book also deals with other current computational paradigms that are likely to impact on the industry. The application areas include asset allocation, asset and liability management, cash-flow analysis, claim costs, classification, fraud detection, insolvency, investments, loss distributions, marketing, pricing and premiums, rate-making, retention, survival analysis, and underwriting. Contents: Insurance Applications of Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic, and Genetic Algorithms; Practical Applications of Neural Networks in Property and Casualty Insurance; An Integrated Data Mining Approach to Premium Pricing for the Automobile Insurance Industry; Population Risk Management: Reducing Costs and Managing Risk in Health Insurance; Using Neural Networks to Predict in the Marketplace; Merging Soft Computing Technologies in Insurance-Related Applications; Robustness in Bayesian Models for BonusOCoMalus Systems; Using Data Mining for Modeling Insurance Risk and Comparison of Data Mining and Linear Modeling Approaches; System Intelligence and Active Stock Trading; The Algebra of Cash Flows: Theory and Application; and other papers. Readership: Graduate students, academics, researchers and practitioners involved with actuarial science, insurance, statistics and management science."

Book excerpt: The book describes and discusses the numerical methods which are successfully being used for analysing ecological data, using a clear and comprehensive approach. These methods are derived from the fields of mathematical physics, parametric and nonparametric statistics, information theory, numerical taxonomy, archaeology, psychometry, sociometry, econometry and others. Compared to the first edition of Numerical Ecology, this second edition includes three new chapters, dealing with the analysis of semiquantitative data, canonical analysis and spatial analysis. New sections have been added to almost all other chapters. There are sections listing available computer programs and packages at the end of several chapters. As in the previous English and French editions, there are numerous examples from the ecological literature, and the choice of methods is facilitated by several synoptic tables.

Book excerpt: The monograph reflects the current standard of knowledge about the open questions considered, taking care to collect and collate all the revelant ideas, facts and formulae which have been until now widely scattered throughout the literature. For the first time, these aspects are collated in book form. Care is taken to clarify the issues, give a systematic collection of conditions which prospective solutions of these open questions have to meet, and gather and collate various useful theoretical concepts and results.
