Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a discipline that has always been in the vanguard of the exploitation of emerging and developing technologies. Advances in both algorithms and computers have rapidly been absorbed by the CFD community in its quest for more accurate simulations and reductions in the time to solution. Within this context, parallel computing has played an increasingly important role. Moreover, the uptake of parallel computing has brought the CFD community into ever-closer contact with hardware vendors and computer scientists. The multidisciplinary subject of parallel CFD and its rapidly evolving nature, in terms of hardware and software, requires a regular international meeting of this nature to keep abreast of the most recent developments. Parallel CFD '97 is part of an annual conference series dedicated to the discussion of recent developments and applications of parallel computing in the field of CFD and related disciplines. This was the 9th in the series, and since the inaugural conference in 1989, many new developments and technologies have emerged. The intervening years have also proved to be extremely volatile for many hardware vendors and a number of companies appeared and then disappeared. However, the belief that parallel computing is the only way forward has remained undiminished. Moreover, the increasing reliability and acceptance of parallel computers has seen many commercial companies now offering parallel versions of their codes, many developed within the EC funded EUROPORT activity, but generally for more modest numbers of processors. It is clear that industry has not moved to large scale parallel systems but it has shown a keen interest in more modest parallel systems recognising that parallel computing will play an important role in the future. This book forms the proceedings of the CFD '97 conference, which was organised by the the Computational Engineering Group at Daresbury Laboratory and held in Manchester, England, on May 19-21 1997. The sessions involved papers on many diverse subjects including turbulence, reactive flows, adaptive schemes, unsteady flows, unstructured mesh applications, industrial applications, developments in software tools and environments, climate modelling, parallel algorithms, evaluation of computer architectures and a special session devoted to parallel CFD at the AEREA research centres. This year's conference, like its predecessors, saw a continued improvement in both the quantity and quality of contributed papers. Since the conference series began many significant milestones have been acheived. For example in 1994, Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) became a reality with the advent of Cray T3D. This, of course, has brought with it the new challenge of scalability for both algorithms and architectures. In the 12 months since the 1996 conference, two more major milestones were achieved: microprocessors with a peak performance of a Gflop/s became available and the world's first Tflop/s calculation was performed. In the 1991 proceedings, the editors indicated that a Tflop/s computer was likely to be available in the latter half of this decade. On December 4th 1996, Intel achieved this breakthrough on the Linpack benchmark using 7,264 (200MHz) Pentium Pro microprocessors as part of the ASCI Red project. With the developments in MPP, the rapid rise of SMP architectures and advances in PC technology, the future for parallel CFD looks both promising and challenging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explores both the theoretical foundation of the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and its applications in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Readers will discover a thorough explanation of the FVM numerics and algorithms used for the simulation of incompressible and compressible fluid flows, along with a detailed examination of the components needed for the development of a collocated unstructured pressure-based CFD solver. Two particular CFD codes are explored. The first is uFVM, a three-dimensional unstructured pressure-based finite volume academic CFD code, implemented within Matlab. The second is OpenFOAM®, an open source framework used in the development of a range of CFD programs for the simulation of industrial scale flow problems. With over 220 figures, numerous examples and more than one hundred exercise on FVM numerics, programming, and applications, this textbook is suitable for use in an introductory course on the FVM, in an advanced course on numerics, and as a reference for CFD programmers and researchers.

This book was released on 2015-05-10 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically only Analytical Fluid Dynamics (AFD) and Experimental Fluid Dynamics (EFD) have been taught at the undergraduate level but inclusion of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which is commonly used to refer to analysis of fluids, and Finite Element Methods (FEM), which is commonly used to refer to analysis of solid materials, are now possible and desirable with the advancing improvements of computer resources. CFD and FEM have now major components of professional life in engineering practice. In the areas of analysis and design, simulation based design is commonly used instead of the traditional "build and test", as it is much more cost effective than EFD and a substantial database is provided for diagnosing the adjacent flow field. Simulations can readily be done of physical phenomena that are difficult to measure, for example, full scale situations, environmental effects and hazards. With the introduction of CFD and FEM into an engineering curriculum, it is possible to educate the young engineer as to the pros and cons of using the three areas, AFD, EFD, CFD and FEM, and to be in a position to know which area to use according to the problem or project confronting them. Importantly, the engineer should learn not be prejudiced against using any of the three areas. So there is an increasing need to integrate computer-assisted learning and simulation, in the guise of CFD and FEM, into undergraduate engineering courses, both as a learning tool and as initial professional training. One of the efficient teaching tools is projects. They introduce the students to engineering problem solving skills and increase the students' interest in the subject of the course. Project-based learning (PBL) is an instructional model based on having students confront real-world issues and problems that they find meaningful, determine how to address them, and then act in a collaborative fashion to create problem solutions. In order to improve the engineering education, a pedagogical method that involves PBL, using CFD and FEM, should applied. The PBL works well for engineering education, since it prepares students for their later professional training. This book is the result of incorporation of CFD and FEM in engineering education. Its chapters are based on a number of final year engineering students projects of a former or current students, successfully completed under the supervision of the author. The author would like to thank the students for providing the projects that were presented in this book. Thanks to all students for their hard work. The book is intended to be a professional development resource book in PBL to teach undergraduate engineering students the CFD and FEM packages in a technical elective senior level course. The book is also intended to serve as a reference resource for the final year engineering students, new graduate students, and faculty.CONTENTS OF VOLUME 1Chapter 1: Introduction.Chapter 2: Three-Dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics Model for Analysis and Design of PEM Fuel Cells.Chapter 3: CFD Analysis of the Clamping Pressure Distribution in Running PEM Fuel Cell.Chapter 4: CFD Study of Power Transistor Heat Sinks Using Different Patterns of Micro Pin Fins for Heat Transfer Enhancement.Chapter 5: Natural Vibration Analysis and Mode Shapes of a PEM Fuel Cell Stack.Chapter 6: CFD Study of a Power Transistor Heat Sink for Better Cooling.Chapter 7: CFD Modeling of Dust Transport and Dispersion through an Office.

Book excerpt: The following grant objectives were delineated in the proposal to NASA: to offer course work in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and related areas to enable mechanical engineering students at North Carolina A&T State University (N.C. A&TSU) to pursue M.S. studies in CFD, and to enable students and faculty to engage in research in high speed compressible flows. Since no CFD-related activity existed at N.C. A&TSU before the start of the NASA grant period, training of students in the CFD area and initiation of research in high speed compressible flows were proposed as the key aspects of the project. To that end, graduate level courses in CFD, boundary layer theory, and fluid dynamics were offered. This effort included initiating a CFD course for graduate students. Also, research work was performed on studying compressibility effects in high speed flows. Specifically, a modified compressible dissipation model, which included a fourth order turbulent Mach number term, was incorporated into the SPARK code and verified for the air-air mixing layer case. The results obtained for this case were compared with a wide variety of experimental data to discern the trends in the mixing layer growth rates with varying convective Mach numbers. Comparison of the predictions of the study with the results of several analytical models was also carried out. The details of the research study are described in the publication entitled 'Compressibility Effects in Modeling Turbulent High Speed Mixing Layers, ' which is attached to this report. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This more-of-physics, less-of-math, insightful and comprehensive book simplifies computational fluid dynamics for readers with little knowledge or experience in heat transfer, fluid dynamics or numerical methods. The novelty of this book lies in the simplification of the level of mathematics in CFD by presenting physical law (instead of the traditional differential equations) and discrete (independent of continuous) math-based algebraic formulations. Another distinguishing feature of this book is that it effectively links theory with computer program (code). This is done with pictorial as well as detailed explanations of implementation of the numerical methodology. It also includes pedagogical aspects such as end-of-chapter problems and carefully designed examples to augment learning in CFD code-development, application and analysis. This book is a valuable resource for students in the fields of mechanical, chemical or aeronautical engineering.
