The base bleed method makes several refinements to the method developed by Danberg at the Army Research Laboratory in Aberdeen, Maryland. The improved rocket motor-on, base pressure prediction improves upon the method developed at the Army Missile Command in Huntsville, Alabama by Brazzel and some of his colleagues. The major refinement to the base bleed method of Danberg was to estimate the power-off value of base pressure empirically based on an extensive data base, as opposed to using computational fluid dynamics codes to predict this term. The major modifications to the power-on base pressure prediction method of Brazzel was to extend its range of applicability to high values of thrust coefficient, to Mach numbers less than 1.5, and to different afterbody shapes. In comparing the improved methods for power-on base drag prediction to experiment, it was seen that both methods gave reasonable agreement to most experimental data bases. However, more validation is needed, particularly for the combined effects of angle of attack, fins, and power-on conditions.

Book excerpt: This paper summarizes the results obtained with the NSU3D unstructured multigrid solver for the AIAA Drag Prediction Workshop held in Anaheim, CA, June 2001. The test case for the workshop consists of a wing-body configuration at transonic flow conditions. Flow analyses for a complete test matrix of lift coefficient values and Mach numbers at a constant Reynolds number are performed, thus producing a set of drag polars and drag rise curves which are compared with experimental data. Results were obtained independently by both authors using an identical baseline grid, and different refined grids. Most cases were run in parallel on commodity cluster-type machines while the largest cases were run on an SGI Origin machine using 128 processors. The objective of this paper is to study the accuracy of the subject unstructured grid solver for predicting drag in the transonic cruise regime, to assess the efficiency of the method in terms of convergence, cpu time and memory, and to determine the effects of grid resolution on this predictive ability and its computational efficiency. A good predictive ability is demonstrated over a wide range of conditions, although accuracy was found to degrade for cases at higher Mach numbers and lift values where increasing amounts of flow separation occur. The ability to rapidly compute large numbers of cases at varying flow conditions using an unstructured solver on inexpensive clusters of commodity computers is also demonstrated.

Book excerpt: The accurate prediction of aircraft aerodynamic drag is a generally recognized and respected problem. So is the accurate measurement of drag in the wind tunnel that, eventually, forms the basis for full scale drag prediction. In the past 15 years Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has emerged as an additional and complementary tool for aerodynamic design and analysis. The purpose of this lecture is to review and comment on its role as a drag prediction and analysis tool. The aerodynamic design process of aircraft is characterized by a sequence of design and analysis cycles. In each cycle a (further) reduction of drag will, generally, be one, but not the only objective. Identification of the source of an unacceptably or undesirably high drag level or drag variation with lift or Mach number is a prerequisite for a successful drag reduction program. Identification of drag sources may follow different approaches. The classical or phenomenological one is based on the availability of overall force (wind tunnel) data only, in combination with simple, semi-empirical theory. CFD, as we shall see later, offers possibilities for a more physically/analytically oriented approach in which the various contributions to drag are distinguished by the underlying physical mechanisms rather than by the observed aerodynamic force variation phenomena. It will also be demonstrated that, in spite of its current shortcomings, CFD is a powerful tool for drag diagnostics. The final part of the lecture contains a discussion on computational drag minimization.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this research is to numerically simulate, analyze, and visualize turbulent flow around rotating aerodynamic shaped 3-dimentional geometries using a custom-made software suite. The computational fluid dynamic program used for this research is called Numerical Wind Tunnel, NWT, which was developed by Dr. J. Militzer and his students over the last 15 years. In order to meet various simulation and prediction requirements of this research, the NWT was modified and improved by implementing many new features; in addition, many bugs have been fixed. Key features added to the NWT include improved boundary layer handling for Detached Eddy Simulation method, new implementations of Surrounding Cell Method and rewritten Lift and Drag Coefficients calculation algorithms, and new approaches to Mesh Refinement and Adaptation Criteria. The improved software is tested extensively by simulating turbulent flows around a rotating National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 0009 airfoil, and test results are compared with both experimental data and previous simulation data. The research was successful mainly because of the much-improved accuracy in predicting static lift and drag coefficients. Another achievement of this research is that the software also successfully predicted various events during an airfoil dynamic stall condition, which is a result of both accurate flow prediction and a NWT feature called Automatic Anisotropic Grid Adaptation.

A major part of the workshop centered on a blind test of various computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods in which the flow about a two- dimensional (2D) three-element airfoil was computed without prior knowledge of the experimental data. The results of this 'blind' test revealed: (1) The Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methods generally showed less variability among codes than did potential/Euler solvers coupled with boundary-layer solution techniques. However, some of the coupled methods still provided excellent predictions. (2) Drag prediction using coupled methods agreed more closely with experiment than the RANS methods. Lift was more accurately predicted than drag for both methods. (3) The CFD methods did well in predicting lift and drag changes due to changes in Reynolds number, however, they did not perform as well when predicting lift and drag increments due to changing flap gap, (4) Pressures and skin friction compared favorably with experiment for most of the codes. (5) There was a large variability in most of the velocity profile predictions. The purpose of the workshop was to assess the prediction of drag by computational methods for a wing/body configuration (DLR-F4) representative of subsonic transport aircraft. This report details computed results submitted to this workshop using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes code CFL3D. Two supplied grids were used: a point-matched 1-to-1 multi-block grid, and an overset multi-block grid. The 1-to-1 grid, generally of much poorer quality and with less streamwise resolution than the overset grid, is found to be too coarse to adequately resolve the surface pressures. However, the global forces and moments are nonetheless similar to those computed using the overset grid. The effect of three different turbulence models is assessed using the 1-to-1 grid. Surface pressures are very similar overall, and the drag variation due to turbulence model is 18 drag counts. Most of this drag variation is in the friction component, and is attributed in part to insufficient grid resolution of the 1-to-1 grid. The misnomer of 'fully turbulent' computations is discussed; comparisons are made using different transition locations and their effects on the global forces and moments are quantified.
