Book excerpt: A numerical study has been performed using a finite-difference boundary layer computer program that includes corrections to the equations of motion for longitudinal curvature and allows the static pressure to be specified as a known function of x and y. Calculations with and without the corrections for longitudinal curvature and pressure gradient normal to be the local surface have been compared to experimental measurements of a supersonic turbulent boundary layer flow over a surface with concave longitudinal curvature. Substantially improved agreement with experimental measurements is obtained for the calculations including corrections for wall curvature and pressure gradient normal to the local surface for density profile, skin friction coefficient, and boundary-layer integral properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of the book, Modeling and Computation of Boundary-Layer Flows^ extends the topic to include compressible flows. This implies the inclusion of the energy equation and non-constant fluid properties in the continuity and momentum equations. The necessary additions are included in new chapters, leaving the first nine chapters to serve as an introduction to incompressible flows and, therefore, as a platform for the extension. This part of the book can be used for a one semester course as described below. Improvements to the incompressible flows portion of the book include the removal of listings of computer programs and their description, and their incor poration in two CD-ROMs. A listing of the topics incorporated in the CD-ROM is provided before the index. In Chapter 7 there is a more extended discussion of initial conditions for three-dimensional flows, application of the characteristic box to a model problem and discussion of flow separation in three-dimensional laminar flows. There are also changes to Chapter 8, which now includes new sections on Tollmien-Schlichting and cross-flow instabilities and on the predic tion of transition with parabolised stability equations, and Chapter 9 provides a description of the rational behind interactive boundary-layer procedures.

Book excerpt: An analysis of the incompressible turbulent boundary layer, developing under the combined effects of mass transfer and pressure gradient, is presented in this paper. A strip-integral method is employed whereby two of the three governing equations are obtained by integrating the combined momentum and continuity equation to 50 percent and 100 percent, respectively, of the boundary-layer height. The latter equation is the usual momentum-integral equation; the former equation requires specification of shear. Accordingly, Clauser's equilibrium eddy-viscosity law is assumed valid at this point. The third and final equation is obtained by specifying that Stevenson's velocity profiles apply throughout the domain of interest, from which a skin-friction law can be derived. Comparisons of the numerical results with the experiments of McQuaid, which include combined effects of variable pressure gradient and mass transfer, show good agreement.

Book excerpt: A method is presented for computing laminar and turbulent boundary-layer flows, including normal pressure gradient and longitudinal curvature as well as compressibility, transverse curvature, and other effects. The governing equations are transformed using the (omega squared) transformation to a von Mises form and solved using an implicit finite-difference scheme. The method is validated by comparing results with experimental data and results of other methods of computation.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rapid method is presented for predicting the development of turbulent boundary layers and wakes taking account of the influence of the upstream flow history on the turbulent stresses. The method employs the momentum integral equation, the entrainment equation and an equation for the streamwise rate of change of entrainment coefficient. This last, developed from the equation for shear stress which Bradshaw, Ferriss and Atwell derived from the turbulent kinetic energy equation, explicitly represents the balance between the advection, production, diffusion and dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy. The application of the method to two-dimensional and axisymmetric flows is described, and it is shown how secondary influences on the turbulence structure such as longitudinal surface curvature, can be logically taken into account. Comparisons with experiment show that, for incompressible flow, the method is fully comparable comparable in accuracy with the best of the methods assessed at the Stanford Conference of 1968. For compressible flow, the accuracy of the method in flow at constant pressure is ensured by its derivation, but the available experimental data do not enable its accuracy in flows with strong pressure gradients to be assessed with any finality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Turbulent Boundary Layers focuses on turbulent flows meeting the requirements for the boundary-layer or thin-shear-layer approximations. Its approach is devising relatively fundamental, and often subtle, empirical engineering correlations, which are then introduced into various forms of describing equations for final solution. After introducing the topic on turbulence, the book examines the conservation equations for compressible turbulent flows, boundary-layer equations, and general behavior of turbulent boundary layers. The latter chapters describe the CS method for calculating two-dimensional and axisymmetric laminar and turbulent boundary layers. This book will be useful to readers who have advanced knowledge in fluid mechanics, especially to engineers who study the important problems of design.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concave curvature has a relatively large, unpredictable effect on turbulent boundary layers. Some, but not all previous studies suggest that a large-scale, stationary array of counter-rotating vortices exists within the turbulent boundary layer on a concave wall. The objective of the present study was to obtain a qualitative model of the flow field in order to increase our understanding of the underlying physics. A large free-surface water channel was constructed in order to perform a visual study of the flow. Streamwise components of mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured using a hot film anemometer. The upstream boundary was spanwise uniform with a momentum thickness to radius of curvature of 0.05. Compared to flat wall flow, large-scale, randomly distributed sweeps and ejections were seen in the boundary layer on the concave wall. The sweeps appear to suppress the normal mechanism for turbulence production near the wall by inhibiting the bursting process. The ejections appear to enhance turbulence production in the outer layers as the low speed fluid convected from regions near the wall interacts with the higher speed fluid farther out. The large-scale structures did not occur at fixed spanwise locations, and could not be called roll cells or vortices. (Author).
