Book excerpt: Notre thèse affirme l’extériorité de la pensée dans le sens d’un au delà de la pensée inaccessible à la pensée elle-même. A contre-courant des philosophies de l’ego et de leurs implications phénoménologiques, elle s’inscrit dans un mouvement qui, de Nietzsche à Heidegger et à Foucault, s’oppose au penser de l’intériorité tel qu’il s’est développé dans la philosophie moderne depuis Descartes et dans le champ de la psychologie. La philosophie plotinienne pose l’existence d’une pensée hors de toute conscience. La conscience est en quelque sorte un épiphénomène de la pensée. Cette métaphysique de l’extériorité prend essentiellement appui sur l’hypostase de l’Intellect. Les Intelligibles ne sont pas seulement ce qui est pensé par un sujet mais constituent une pensée en soi. Ainsi l’Intellect subsiste indépendamment de la conscience. Pour Plotin la conscience paraît affaiblir les actes qu’elle accompagne. Le langage est le support de cette opération d’affaiblissement de la pensée. Cette théorie ouvre la question du sujet et nous permet de répondre à la question : qui pense lorsque nous disons « je pense » ? En déterminant l’orientation de la conscience, le sujet plotinien apparaît comme le garant éthique parce qu’il introduit la question de la responsabilité.
