Book excerpt: "Excess water production in oil fields is becoming a challenging economic and environmental problem as more reservoirs are maturing. Water channeling, one of the primary reservoir conformance problems, is caused by reservoir heterogeneities that lead to the development of high-permeability streaks. The recovery of oil from carbonate reservoirs is usually low due to their extreme heterogeneity caused by natural fractures and the nature of oil-wet matrix. Also, oil recovery from fractured sandstone reservoirs is often low due to areal heterogeneity. Gel treatments have proven to be a successful and inexpensive fluid diversion method when used to plug the thief zones and thereby improve sweep efficiency in reservoirs. However, particle gel treatment can only be used to plug fractures or high permeable channels to improve sweep efficiency and has little effect on displacement efficiency. Oil recovery is the product of displacement efficiency (ED) and sweep efficiency (ES). Particle gels can plug fractures and improve sweep efficiency, but they have little effect on displacement efficiency. Low salinity water flooding (LSWF) can only increase displacement efficiency but has little or no effect on sweep efficiency. The main objective of this research is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the combined LSWF-PPG technology and to show how the coupling method can improve oil recovery. We developed a cost-effective, novel, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology for fractured reservoirs by coupling the two technologies into one process. The coupled method bypasses the limitations of each method when used individually and improves both displacement and sweep efficiency"--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: "The interest in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods has re-emerged in recent years; however, significant challenges remain for the widespread deployment of these methods. One major downside to the successful application of EOR technologies in mature reservoirs is conformance problems (e.g. heterogeneity). To mitigate these problems, a novel EOR method which couple preformed particle gel (PPGs) conformance treatment with traditional surfactant flooding in one process is introduced. This dissertation provides a comprehensive study for the proposed method. A series of laboratory tests were carried out to understand the chemical interaction between PPGs and surfactants. A new method to evaluate PPGs strength in the oilfield and laboratory was introduced. Core flooding tests were run to investigate to what extent the coupled method can improve oil recovery using fractured carbonate and sandstone cores. Oilfield pilot tests were implemented in several injection wells located in Kansas. The chemical interaction experiments showed that surfactants concentrations influenced the swelling ratio and strength of PPGs. Fractured core flooding tests showed a higher increase in oil recovery through surfactant forced imbibition process by PPGs than a single method. The new PPG strength measurement apparatus provided a reliable technique to quantitatively evaluate PPG properties in the field. Oilfield pilot tests were implemented successfully in several candidate wells. The treatment s effectively increased the injection pressure of injection wells and reduced water production of adjacent production wells. Overall, this method provides a cost-effective approach for improving oil recovery while also reducing excess water production in mature and fractured reservoirs"--Abstract, page iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Extracting higher amounts of oil from current reservoirs is a necessity for the oil industry to enhance their profitability and sustainability. The desire to recover more oil from the existing reservoirs has led to a growing interest of nanoparticle application in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). However, most researchers have focused on the evaluation and surface modification of non-deformable nanoparticles. This dissertation evaluates the potential of deformable nanogel particles as an EOR material when they are combined with two other promising technologies - surfactant and low salinity water floodings. The particle size distribution, [zeta]-potential and interfacial tension were measured for a newly developed nanogel when dispersed in brine with different salinities. The core flooding experiments, using sandstone and carbonate rocks, have indicated the ability of nanogel-surfactant flooding to emulsify crude oil in-situ and produce it as oil-in-water emulsion. The results have also revealed that substantial oil recovery, up to 27%, beyond conventional seawater flooding can be obtained by nanogel combined with SDS injections and assisted with altering salinity and ionic content of post water injections. Surfactant injection has shown to reduce nanogel adsorption density on rock surfaces. The injectivity and plugging performance induced by nanogel injection through sandstone and carbonate reservoir rocks were elucidated to assess their potential as oil recovery improvement agents. Emulsification is believed to be a major recovery mechanism of nanogel-assisted surfactant flooding. Here, oil-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by nanogel and surfactants using different brine salinities, pH, homogenizing time were evaluated for the formulation of a stable oil droplets. The confocal microscopy images have shown that stable oil-in-water Pickering emulsions are formed by nanogel combined with anionic surfactant and low brine salinity. The results presented in this dissertation promote the effect of nanogel assisted-surfactant flooding combined with low salinity water as a promising method for enhancing oil recovery"--Abstract, page iv.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water flooding of oil reservoirs has been performed for a century in order to improve oil recovery for two reasons: (1) give pressure support to the reservoir to prevent gas production and (2) displace the oil by viscous forces. During the last 30 years, it was discovered that the wetting properties of the reservoir played a very important role for the efficiency of the water flood. Even though much work have been published on crude oil–brine–rock (CBR) interaction related to wetting properties, Professor N.R. Morrow, University of Wyoming, asked the audience the following question at the European enhanced oil-recovery (EOR) meeting in Cambridge, April 2011: Do we understand water flooding of oil reservoirs? If we are not able to explain why injection fluids of different ionic composition can have a great impact on displacement efficiency and oil recovery, the answer to Morrow’s question is NO. Researchers have to admit that we do not know the phenomena of water flooding well enough. The key to improve our understanding is to obtain fundamental chemical understanding of the CBR interaction by controlled laboratory studies, and then propose chemical mechanisms, which should be validated also from field experience. In this chapter, I have tried to sum up our experience and chemical understanding on water-based EOR in carbonates and sandstones during the last 20 years with a specific focus on initial wetting properties and possibilities for wettability modification to optimize oil recovery. Chemically, the CBR interaction is completely different in carbonates and sandstones. The proposed chemical mechanisms for wettability modification are used to explain field observations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crude oil development and production in U.S. oil reservoirs can include up to three distinct phases: primary, secondary, and tertiary (or enhanced) recovery. During primary recovery, the natural pressure of the reservoir or gravity drive oil into the wellbore, combined with artificial lift techniques (such as pumps) which bring the oil to the surface. But only about 10 percent of a reservoir's original oil in place is typically produced during primary recovery. Secondary recovery techniques to the field's productive life generally by injecting water or gas to displace oil and drive it to a production wellbore, resulting in the recovery of 20 to 40 percent of the original oil in place. In the past two decades, major oil companies and research organizations have conducted extensive theoretical and laboratory EOR (enhanced oil recovery) researches, to include validating pilot and field trials relevant to much needed domestic commercial application, while western countries had terminated such endeavours almost completely due to low oil prices. In recent years, oil demand has soared and now these operations have become more desirable. This book is about the recent developments in the area as well as the technology for enhancing oil recovery. The book provides important case studies related to over one hundred EOR pilot and field applications in a variety of oil fields. These case studies focus on practical problems, underlying theoretical and modelling methods, operational parameters (e.g., injected chemical concentration, slug sizes, flooding schemes and well spacing), solutions and sensitivity studies, and performance optimization strategies. The book strikes an ideal balance between theory and practice, and would be invaluable to academicians and oil company practitioners alike. - Updated chemical EOR fundamentals providing clear picture of fundamental concepts - Practical cases with problems and solutions providing practical analogues and experiences - Actual data regarding ranges of operation parameters providing initial design parameters - Step-by-step calculation examples providing practical engineers with convenient procedures
