Download or read book Dying written by Hannelore Wass and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides an up-to-date examination of the ways people face dying and bereavement. In this third edition previous chapters are throrughly revised, and new contributors expand areas that have changed significantly. Reflecting the field's complex interdisciplinary character, the chapters cover such diverse areas as psychology, nursing, medicine, AIDS, family studies, sociology, education, philosophy, law, religion, the humanities and political science, whilst highlighting thanatology's core psychological and therapeutic caregiving dimensions. First, the text offers broad examinations of death systems from the vantage points of various cultural, historical and disciplinary perspectives. The second section represents the core of the book, offering detailed surveys of the "data" of death, dying and bereavement as they relate to different phases of our encounter with death as an abstract possibility and concrete reality. Next are chapters addressing a cluster of death-related issues and challenges that confront us at both a societal and individual level - such as AIDS - and finally the volume closes with a few reflections on the complexity of contemporary thanatology, framing some issues and recommendations that deserve greater attention by scholars, researchers, policy makers and practitioners. Also included is a comprehensive resource bibliography on the topic. This text is intended to be of use as a resource for all those interested in reading about death studies, both professionals and students alike.

Once confined by its gilded walls and stifling grandeur, Isabella’s escape into the early morning mist signals her defiance against a life of wealth and tradition. Accompanied by her loyal friend Agnes, Isabella embarks on a daring journey toward freedom, their path lit by hope and shadowed by the relentless pursuit of Mr. Langley. The mist-covered country roads and ancient trees become both a treacherous and hopeful route to liberation. As danger looms in the form of the hostile Tomas, a glimmer of sanctuary appears with the arrival of Maren, a fierce protector dedicated to change. Her intervention guides Isabella and Agnes to a vibrant village where a gathering of women is committed to breaking free from their pasts. In this lively community, a world apart from Hartley Manor's oppressive gloom, Isabella meets Edward Thorne. Their reunion, filled with shared dreams and the promise of freedom, ushers in a new chapter in their intertwined destinies. Looking back on my poems, written and now collected, I discover I see things anew, not only the remembered incidents (when that happens) but also the vision created in my mind by the poem itself. These poems, collected from parts of my life run past now, are glimpses that offer glimpses of what is seen and what that seeing seems to mean. I find the poems best serve me in becoming the creator of insights and perspective. The poems in this book have been giving that gift for me again.

Download or read book Wandering written by Sarah Jane Cervenak and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining black feminist theory, philosophy, and performance studies, Sarah Jane Cervenak ruminates on the significance of physical and mental roaming for black freedom. She is particularly interested in the power of wandering or daydreaming for those whose mobility has been under severe constraint, from the slave era to the present. Since the Enlightenment, wandering has been considered dangerous and even criminal when associated with people of color. Cervenak engages artist-philosophers who focus on wayward movement and daydreaming, or mental travel, that transcend state-imposed limitations on physical, geographic movement. From Sojourner Truth's spiritual and physical roaming to the rambling protagonist of Gayl Jones's novel Mosquito, Cervenak highlights modes of wandering that subvert Enlightenment-based protocols of rationality, composure, and upstanding comportment. Turning to the artists Pope.L (William Pope.L), Adrian Piper, and Carrie Mae Weems, Cervenak argues that their work produces an otherworldly movement, an errant kinesis that exceeds locomotive constraints, resisting the straightening-out processes of post-Enlightenment, white-supremacist, capitalist, sexist, and heteronormative modernity. Their roaming animates another terrain, one where free, black movement is not necessarily connected to that which can be seen, touched, known, and materially valued.

Book Synopsis Kant's Deontological Eudaemonism by : Jeanine M. Grenberg
Download or read book Kant's Deontological Eudaemonism written by Jeanine M. Grenberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Professor Jeanine Grenberg defends the idea that Kant's virtue theory is best understood as a system of eudaemonism, indeed, as a distinctive form of eudaemonism that makes it preferable to other forms of it: a system of what she calls Deontological Eudaemonism. In Deontological Eudaemonism, one achieves happiness both rationally conceived (as non-felt pleasure in the virtually unimpeded harmonious activity of one's will and choice) and empirically conceived (as pleasurable fulfilment of one's desires) only via authentic commitment to and fulfilment of what is demanded of all rational beings: making persons as such one's end in all things. To tell this story of Deontological Eudaemonism, Grenberg first defends the notion that Kant's deontological approach to ethics is simultaneously (and indeed, foundationally, and most basically) teleological. She then shows that the realization of an aptitude for the virtuous fulfilment of one's obligatory ends provides the solid basis for simultaneous realization of happiness, both rationally and empirically conceived. Along the way, she argues both that Kant's notion of happiness rationally conceived is essentially identical to Aristotle's conception of happiness as unimpeded activity, and that his notion of happiness empirically conceived is best realized via an unwavering commitment to the fulfilment of one's obligatory ends.
