Von Strombeck 7 found the following impurities to be present in American liquefied ammonia, without, however, furnishing conclusive identification in every case, namely, water, methyl, ethyl, and isopropyl alcohols, acetone, and carbon dioxide (present as ammonium carbonate). In addition, there were found mineral oil, sand, iron oxide, and iron sulphide, which may be regarded as accidental impurities introduced during liquefaction or from the iron containers. In 1897 A. Lange and J. Hertz identified with considerable certainty the following impurities, namely, water, pyridine and some of its homologs, nicotine, ethyl alcohol, acetonitrile, ammonium carbonate, and mineral oil. Benzene and naphthalene were found occasionally. They were unable to detect the presence of acetone or Of any alcohols other than ethyl alcohol. The presence of noncondensing gas in the container was also noted. The noncondensing gas present in American samples has been found recently by W. D. Richardson 9 to consist of a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen approaching the composition of air, with in some cases a small amount of hydrogen. K. Urban '2 suggested the occurrence of pyrrol in ammonia, without, however, presenting any proof of its presence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ammonia and Ammonium Compounds Notwithstanding the existence of the Handbooks of Lunge and Fehrmann, I have ventured, at the request of the publishers, to treat of the present position of the Ammonia industry in this little work. I have also found it necessary to include a description of the treatment of the "spent-oxide" from the coal-gas purification - an industry which is intimately related to the foregoing, and of which no connected description has as yet been published. The book may therefore be regarded as an attempt to collect descriptions of all the processes necessary for the utilization of the nitrogen present in coal. I have omitted mentioning obsolete views, even when still held by certain chemists and others, the object of the work being to portray briefly the present position of the two above-named industries, both of which are so closely connected with the coal-gas manufacture. To remedy a want in the present literature on this subject, I have given special attention to the analysis of the final products, and also of the raw material and other substances required in the various processes. Should these methods, which are based upon practical experience, prove acceptable, a step will have been taken in the direction of unity in analytical methods, which result is greatly to be desired in this as in other industries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Properties of Saturated and Superheated Ammonia Vapor The first attempt to establish the fundamental equations for the vapor (ff ammonia and to compute tables of its properties was made by Ledoux.6 These equations and resulting tables, resting as they do upon unsound hypotheses and meager experimental data, are, in the light of later investigations, quite inaccurate. The next theoretical investigation of the subject was undertaken by Zeuner,7 who computed new constants for ammonia, in the equation of state of the form already applied by him to steam, and used by Ledoux for ammonia. He also constructed empirical formulas for the inner and outer latent heat, and the specific heat'of the liquid, and by use of these formulas computed tables which. Appeared in the earlier editions of his thermodynamics.8 In the later editions9 the values thus calculated have still been used for temperatures below 32° F., but results of later experimental deter minations have been used above that temperature. These tables for ammonia vapor are given in both English and French units. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Designed as an undergraduate-level textbook in Chemical Engineering, this student-friendly, thoroughly class-room tested book, now in its second edition, continues to provide an in-depth analysis of chemical engineering thermodynamics. The book has been so organized that it gives comprehensive coverage of basic concepts and applications of the laws of thermodynamics in the initial chapters, while the later chapters focus at length on important areas of study falling under the realm of chemical thermodynamics. The reader is thus introduced to a thorough analysis of the fundamental laws of thermodynamics as well as their applications to practical situations. This is followed by a detailed discussion on relationships among thermodynamic properties and an exhaustive treatment on the thermodynamic properties of solutions. The role of phase equilibrium thermodynamics in design, analysis, and operation of chemical separation methods is also deftly dealt with. Finally, the chemical reaction equilibria are skillfully explained. Besides numerous illustrations, the book contains over 200 worked examples, over 400 exercise problems (all with answers) and several objective-type questions, which enable students to gain an in-depth understanding of the concepts and theory discussed. The book will also be a useful text for students pursuing courses in chemical engineering-related branches such as polymer engineering, petroleum engineering, and safety and environmental engineering. New to This Edition • More Example Problems and Exercise Questions in each chapter • Updated section on Vapour–Liquid Equilibrium in Chapter 8 to highlight the significance of equations of state approach • GATE Questions up to 2012 with answers

Book excerpt: Section 304(a) (1) of the Clean Water Act 33 U.S.C. 1314(a) (1) requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to publish and periodically update ambient water quality criteria. These criteria are to accurately reflect the latest scientific knowledge (a) on the kind and extent of all identifiable effects on health and welfare including, but not limited to, plankton, fish shellfish, wildlife, plant life, shorelines, beaches, aesthetics, and recreation which may be expected from the presence of pollutants in any body of water including ground water; (b) on the concentration and dispersal of pollutants, or their byproducts, through biological, physical, and chemical processes; and (c) on the effects of pollutants on biological community diversity, productivity, and stability, including information on the factors affecting rates of eutrophication and organic and inorganic sedimentation for varying types of receiving waters. In a continuing effort to provide those who use EPA's water quality and human health criteria with up-to-date criteria values and associated information, the document was assembled. The document includes summaries of all the contaminants for which EPA has developed criteria recommendations.

Book excerpt: This newly reissued debut book in the Rutgers University Press Classics Imprint is the story of the search for a rocket propellant which could be trusted to take man into space. This search was a hazardous enterprise carried out by rival labs who worked against the known laws of nature, with no guarantee of success or safety. Acclaimed scientist and sci-fi author John Drury Clark writes with irreverent and eyewitness immediacy about the development of the explosive fuels strong enough to negate the relentless restraints of gravity. The resulting volume is as much a memoir as a work of history, sharing a behind-the-scenes view of an enterprise which eventually took men to the moon, missiles to the planets, and satellites to outer space. A classic work in the history of science, and described as “a good book on rocket stuff…that’s a really fun one” by SpaceX founder Elon Musk, readers will want to get their hands on this influential classic, available for the first time in decades.

Book excerpt: Expertise in electrolyte systems has become increasingly important in traditional CPI operations, as well as in oil/gas exploration and production. This book is the source for predicting electrolyte systems behavior, an indispensable "do-it-yourself" guide, with a blueprint for formulating predictive mathematical electrolyte models, recommended tabular values to use in these models, and annotated bibliographies. The final chapter is a general recipe for formulating complete predictive models for electrolytes, along with a series of worked illustrative examples. It can serve as a useful research and application tool for the practicing process engineer, and as a textbook for the chemical engineering student.
