Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of the chemistry, geology, toxicology and environmental impacts of arsenic, presenting information on relatively common arsenic minerals and their key properties. In addition, it includes discussions on the environmental impacts of the release of arsenic from mining and coal combustion. Although the environmental regulations of different nations vary and change over time, prominent International, North American, and European guidelines and regulations on arsenic will be reviewed. Includes information on recent environmental catastrophes (e.g. Bangladesh and China) A thorough discussion of the arsenic cycle, including the cosmological origin of arsenic Includes Appendices providing extensive glossary and measurement conversion tables

Book Synopsis Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering by : W. Ahmed
Download or read book Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering written by W. Ahmed and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2008-01-05 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomedical engineering involves the application of the principles and techniques of engineering to the enhancement of medical science as applied to humans or animals. It involves an interdisciplinary approach which combines the materials, mechanics, design, modelling and problem-solving skills employed in engineering with medical and biological sciences so as to improve the health, lifestyle and quality-of-life of individuals. Biomedical engineering is a relatively new field, and involves a whole spectrum of disciplines covering: bioinformatics, medical imaging, image processing, physiological signal processing, biomechanics, biomaterials and bioengineering, systems analysis, 3-D modelling, etc. Combining these disciplines, systematically and synergistically yields total benefits which are much greater than the sum of the individual components. Prime examples of the successful application of biomedical engineering include the development and manufacture of biocompatible prostheses, medical devices, diagnostic devices and imaging equipment and pharmaceutical drugs. The purpose of this book is to present the latest research and development carried out in the areas of biomedical engineering, biomaterials and nanomaterials science and to highlight the applications of such systems. Particular emphasis is given to the convergence of nano-scale effects, as related to the delivery of enhanced biofunctionality.

Book Synopsis Glacial Geology and Glacial Sediment Geochemistry in the Clyde Forks-Westport Area of Ontario by : I. M. Kettles
Download or read book Glacial Geology and Glacial Sediment Geochemistry in the Clyde Forks-Westport Area of Ontario written by I. M. Kettles and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution of Quaternary deposits and landforms was mapped and glacial sediments were systematically sampled in four 1:50,000 NTS map sheets for Clyde Forks, Sharbot Lake, Perth and Westport in eastern Ontario. Sampling was also carried out in the adjacent Tichborne and Carleton Place map areas and for purposes of discussion these map areas have been included in the study region. Over 520 drift samples, predominantly till, were collected and analyzed for their content of selected pebble lithologies, silt plus clay-sized carbonate, and for the trace elements of silver, arsenic, gold, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper iron, mercury, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, phosphorus, palladium, platinum, uranium and zinc. The texture of all samples was also determined. In addition, similar data for approximately 400 glacial sediment samples collected during an earlier survey were incorporated into this study.
