Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music and arts initiatives are often praised for their capacity to aid in the rehabilitation of refugees. However, it is crucial to recognize that this celebratory view can also mask the unequal power dynamics involved in regulating forced migration. In Composing Aid, Oliver Shao turns a critical ear towards the United Nations-run Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, one of the largest and oldest encampments in the world. This politically engaged ethnography delves into various cultural practices, including hip hop shows, traditional dances, religious ceremonies, and NGO events, in an urbanized borderland area beset with precarity and inequality. How do songs intersect with the politics of belonging in a space controlled by state and humanitarian forces? Why do camp authorities support certain musical activities over others? What can performing artists teach us about the inequities of the international refugee regime? Offering a provocative contribution to ethnomusicological methods through its focus on activist research, Composing Aid elucidates the powerful role of music and the arts in reproducing, contesting, and reimagining the existing migratory order.

Book Synopsis Moravian Soundscapes by : Sarah Justina Eyerly
Download or read book Moravian Soundscapes written by Sarah Justina Eyerly and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Moravian Soundscapes, Sarah Eyerly contends that the study of sound is integral to understanding the interactions between German Moravian missionaries and Native communities in early Pennsylvania. In the mid-18th century, when the frontier between settler and Native communities was a shifting spatial and cultural borderland, sound mattered. People listened carefully to each other and the world around them. In Moravian communities, cultures of hearing and listening encompassed and also superseded musical traditions such as song and hymnody. Complex biophonic, geophonic, and anthrophonic acoustic environments—or soundscapes—characterized daily life in Moravian settlements such as Bethlehem, Nain, Gnadenhütten, and Friedenshütten. Through detailed analyses and historically informed recreations of Moravian communal, environmental, and religious soundscapes and their attendant hymn traditions, Moravian Soundscapes explores how sounds—musical and nonmusical, human and nonhuman—shaped the Moravians' religious culture. Combined with access to an interactive website that immerses the reader in mid-18th century Pennsylvania, and framed with an autobiographical narrative, Moravian Soundscapes recovers the roles of sound and music in Moravian communities and provides a road map for similar studies of other places and religious traditions in the future.

Book Synopsis Writing is an Aid to Memory by : Lyn Hejinian
Download or read book Writing is an Aid to Memory written by Lyn Hejinian and published by Green Integer. This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I am always conscious of the disquieting runs of life slipping by", writes Lyn Hejinian in the Preface to this major early work of poetry. "Necessity is the limit with forgetfulness, but it remains undefined. Memory is the girth, or again". In this incredible work, Hejinian takes the idea of memory as something repeated, or "a gain", something that contributes and advances presentness. First published by The Figures in 1978, this work has long been unavailable and has been highly sought by the numerous readers and students of Hejinian's work. Her works My Life, The Cell, and The Cold of Poetry are taught in universities internationally, and have created a large audience for her writing. Writing Is an Aid to Memory will make available, once again, an important part of her oeuvre.
