Book excerpt: Les travaux de cette thèse concernent l'étude expérimentale du comportement en fatigue de matériaux composites sous trois angles différents qui sont la détection et la caractérisation du délaminage, le comportement en fatigue sous sollicitations multiaxiales et enfin l'étude de structures semi-industrielles. Dans un premier temps, une étude bibliographique complétée par une étude expérimentale permet de mettre en évidence que le délaminage est un mode d'endommagement très sévère pour les composites stratifiés et qu'il est nécessaire d'avoir un indicateur fiable de l'endommagement dans les matériaux composites. Dans le second chapitre, le délaminage est étudié en utilisant deux techniques non destructives : l'imagerie ultrasonore et la thermographie infrarouge. L'utilisation de ces deux méthodes couplées à des observations macroscopiques ont permis une évaluation satisfaisante du délaminage. Le troisième chapitre aborde l'étude d'un matériau composite isotrope sous sollicitations multiples monotones et cycliques. Une éprouvette cruciforme a été conçue et fabriquée de manière optimale pour étudier l'influence de l'ajout d'une contrainte moyenne issue d'un effort constant perpendiculaire à l'effort cyclique appliqué, sur le comportement en fatigue. Les résultats des essais ainsi qu'une modélisation numérique ont montré qu'il n'y avait pas d'influence. Le dernier chapitre étudie le comportement en fatigue en flexion trois points d'une éprouvette sandwich utilisée dans le domaine du ferroviaire. Une étude expérimentale et une modélisation numérique ont permis de mettre en évidence l'influence des joints de colle sur le comportement de ce type de matériaux. Les premiers résultats en fatigue sont présentés.

Book excerpt: The aim of the this study is to investigate the mechanical behaviour of sandwich composite materials under static and fatigue. Initially, static and fatigue testing of cores in compression, indentation, shear and three-point bending tests and skins in flexural tests are conducted to derive the mechanical behaviour and the characteristics for the constituants of the sandwich composites. Detailed investigations have been carried out to study the performance of sandwich specimens of different core thickness and densities at various span lengths in static flexural tests. Phenomena of pure bending and shear are characterised at different span lengths and compared to the results obtained by the sandwich beam theory. Damage initiation, progression, coalescence and failure are observed in sandwich specimens during fatigue testing and correlated with stiffness degradation. Mechanical behaviour of sandwich composites is highly affected by the core thickness and the density of the foams and depends on the type of loading, the frequency, as well as the applied loading levels and ratios. Fatigue life is characterised by Wohler curves using N10 criterion for different types of sandwich composites. Finally, analytical models are developed on the basis of a stiffness degradation approach to predict the fatigue life and damage development in sandwich composite materials. A good agreement is found between experimental and analytical results.

Bien que mal connu a l'heure actuelle, leur comportement en fatigue est une donnée de première importance qu'il importe de déterminer. L'objectif de ce travail consiste a caractériser le comportement en fatigue d'un composite bidirectionnel a fibres et a matrice sic, et a identifier le mécanisme microstructural qui est a l'origine de la fatigue. Dans cette optique, le diagramme d'endurance a été établi en traction repetee et en flexion ondulée. La limite de fatigue ainsi mesurée est plus élevée que pour les matériaux classiques tels que les métaux, et des essais de fatigue cumulée ont permis d'améliorer la tenue en fatigue de ce matériau. L'étude de la fréquence d'essai a révèle une faible contribution de phénomènes dépendant uniquement du temps. Pour ce composite, l'hypothèse retenue pour expliquer l'effet de fatigue a température ambiante est la présence d'une érosion de la zone interfaciale, ce qui fournit un scénario théorique cohérent avec l'ensemble des observations expérimentales. Cependant, en vue d'une généralisation a un plus grand nombre de composites a matrice céramique ou vitrocéramique, la modélisation proposée devra être complétée en intégrant les effets qui sont lies a la structure du renfort fibreux et a la présence d'autres mécanismes d'endommagement tels que la propagation sous critique par corrosion sous contrainte

Les résultats expérimentaux sont comparés à ceux obtenus par une modélisation combinée à une analyse par éléments finis basée sur la théorie des stratifiés avec cisaillement transverse. Une étude paramétrique est menee sur les matériaux sandwichs, permettant de mettre en évidence comment il est possible d'optimiser l'amortissement de ces matériaux en faisant varier divers paramètres. Enfin la modélisation est appliquée à l'analyse de l'amortissement d'une structure de géométrie simple constituée de différents matériaux. Les réponses en fréquence obtenues à partir de la modélisation sont comparées à celles obtenu par l'analyse expérimentale.
