Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of the entire research work on the topic of Complex Binary Number System (CBNS) carried out by the author as the principal investigator and members of his research groups at various universities during the years 2000-2012. Pursuant to these efforts spanning several years, the realization of CBNS as a viable alternative to represent complex numbers in an “all-in-one” binary number format has become possible and efforts are underway to build computer hardware based on this unique number system. It is hoped that this work will be of interest to anyone involved in computer arithmetic and digital logic design and kindle renewed enthusiasm among the engineers working in the areas of digital signal and image processing for developing newer and efficient algorithms and techniques incorporating CBNS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although students of analysis are familiar with real and complex numbers, few treatments of analysis deal with the development of such numbers in any depth. An understanding of number systems at a fundamental level is necessary for a deeper grasp of analysis. Beginning with elementary concepts from logic and set theory, this book develops in turn the natural numbers, the integers and the rational, real and complex numbers. The development is motivated by the need to solve polynomial equations, and the book concludes by proving that such equations have solutions in the complex number system.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focuses on a novel integrated approach for computing and representing complex numbers as a single entity without the use of any dedicated multiplier for calculating the fast Fourier transform algorithm (FFT), using the Distributed Arithmetic (DA) technique and Complex Binary Number Systems (CBNS). The FFT algorithm is one of the most used and implemented technique employed in many Digital Signal Processing (DSP) applications in the field of science, engineering, and mathematics. The DA approach is a technique that is used to compute the inner dot product between two vectors without the use of any dedicated multipliers. These dedicated multipliers are fast but they consume a large amount of hardware and are quite costly. The DA multiplier process is accomplished by shifting and adding only without the need of any dedicated multiplier. In today's technology, complex numbers are computed using the divide and conquer approach in which complex numbers are divided into two parts: the real and imaginary. The CBNS technique however, allows for each complex addition and multiplication to be computed in one single step instead of two. With the combined DA-CBNS approach for computing the FFT algorithm, those dedicated multipliers are being replaced with a DA system that utilize a Rom-based memory for storing the twiddle factor 'wn' value and the complex arithmetic operations being represented as a single entity, not two, with the CBNS approach. This architectural design was implemented by coding in a very high speed integrated circuit (VHSIC) hardware description language (VHDL) using Xilinx ISE design suite software program version 14.2. This computer aided tool allows for the design to be synthesized to a logic gate level in order to be further implemented onto a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) device. The VHDL code used to build this architecture was downloaded on a Nexys 4 DDR Artix-7 FPGA board for further testing and analysis. This novel technique resulted in the use of no dedicated multipliers and required half the amount of complex arithmetic computations needed for calculating an FFT structure compared with its current traditional approach. Finally, the results showed that for the proposed architecture design, for a 32 bit, 8-point DA-CBNS FFT structure, the results showed a 32% area reduction, 41% power reduction, 59% reduction in run-time, 42% reduction in logic gate cost, and 66% increase in speed. For a 28 bit, 16-point DA-CBNS FFT structure, its area size, power consumption, run-time, and logic gate, were also found to be reduced at approximately 30%, 37%, 60%, and 39%, respectively, with an increase of speed of approximately 67% when compared to the traditional approach that employs dedicated multipliers and computes its complex arithmetic as two separate entities: the real and imaginary.

Book excerpt: "Number Theory in Science and Communication" is a well-known introduction for non-mathematicians to this fascinating and useful branch of applied mathematics . It stresses intuitive understanding rather than abstract theory and highlights important concepts such as continued fractions, the golden ratio, quadratic residues and Chinese remainders, trapdoor functions, pseudo primes and primitive elements. Their applications to problems in the real world are one of the main themes of the book. This revised fifth edition is augmented by recent advances in coding theory, permutations and derangements and a chapter in quantum cryptography. From reviews of earlier editions – "I continue to find [Schroeder’s] Number Theory a goldmine of valuable information. It is a marvelous book, in touch with the most recent applications of number theory and written with great clarity and humor.’ Philip Morrison (Scientific American) "A light-hearted and readable volume with a wide range of applications to which the author has been a productive contributor – useful mathematics outside the formalities of theorem and proof." Martin Gardner

Book excerpt: This book offers a rigorous and coherent introduction to the five basic number systems of mathematics, namely natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, real numbers, and complex numbers. It is a subject that many mathematicians believe should be learned by any student of mathematics including future teachers. The book starts with the development of Peano arithmetic in the first chapter which includes mathematical induction and elements of recursion theory. It proceeds to an examination of integers that also covers rings and ordered integral domains. The presentation of rational numbers includes material on ordered fields and convergence of sequences in these fields. Cauchy and Dedekind completeness properties of the field of real numbers are established, together with some properties of real continuous functions. An elementary proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra is the highest point of the chapter on complex numbers. The great merit of the book lies in its extensive list of exercises following each chapter. These exercises are designed to assist the instructor and to enhance the learning experience of the students.

Book excerpt: "Beauty is the first test: there is no permanent place in the world for ugly mathematics. " - G. H. Hardy Number theory has been considered since time immemorial to be the very paradigm of pure (some would say useless) mathematics. In fact, the Chinese characters for mathematics are Number Science. "Mathematics is the queen of sciences - and number theory is the queen of mathematics," according to Carl Friedrich Gauss, the lifelong Wunderkind, who himself enjoyed the epithet "Princeps Mathematicorum. " What could be more beautiful than a deep, satisfying relation between whole numbers. (One is almost tempted to call them wholesome numbers') In fact, it is hard to come up with a more appropriate designation than their learned name: the integers - meaning the "untouched ones". How high they rank, in the realms of pure thought and aesthetics, above their lesser brethren: the real and complex number- whose first names virtually exude unsavory involvement with the complex realities of everyday life! Yet, as we shall see in this book, the theory of integers can provide totally unexpected answers to real-world problems. In fact, discrete mathematics is taking on an ever more important role. If nothing else, the advent of the digital computer and digital communication has seen to that. But even earlier, in physics the emergence of quantum mechanics and discrete elementary particles put a premium on the methods and, indeed, the spirit of discrete mathematics.
