Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TianGan (Heavenly Stems) and DiZhi (Earthly Branches), commonly abbreviated to GanZhi, originated in the ancient Chinese cosmological sciences and is a complex calendrical system which was created to codify the patterns of life and of the universe itself. The ten symbols of Gan express the Yin or Yang perspective of Five Elements and embody the Way of Heaven. The 12 symbols of Zhi, made manifest in the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, hold the root of each Element and embrace the Way of Earth. This set of study cards beautifully presents the key characteristics of each of the 22 GanZhi symbols, making it a unique learning tool and reference guide. The Chinese character of each Stem or Branch is shown, and for calligraphers and those who want to draw the characters correctly the stroke order is clearly illustrated on separate cards. This accessible learning tool offers essential information on the fundamental building blocks upon which Chinese classical texts, classical Chinese medicine, Fengshui, Chinese astrology, traditional Chinese cosmology, Qigong, Neigong, Taiji, and other inner cultivation practices are built. These cards provide a key starting point for the beginning student and offer invaluable information for the seasoned practitioner to deepen their practice. A companion book (9781848191518), also published by Singing Dragon, is available.

Book excerpt: Stems carry out vital jobs for all flowering plants, they hold plants up and carry water and food around each plant. This book provides readers with a complete and comprehensive understanding of the role of stems, their structure and how they are brilliantly designed to do these jobs. Clear diagrams, engaging text, and stunning photographs are used to explain the huge variation between stems from blades of grass to tree trunks, how stems work, what happens inside a stem, how stems form, why bendy stems and stiff stems can give plants different advantages, plants with underground stems that store food, stems that grow sideways and why, and our relationship with stems. A wide range of examples present readers with stems they will be familiar with plus spectacular and unusual examples from around the world. These demonstrate what stems have in common and some incredible stem adaptations that allow plants to survive in different conditions and habitats. Two simple experiments help stimulate thought, reinforce learning, and bring the concepts to life.

Book excerpt: Chinese acupuncture based upon stems branches is one type of acupuncture that pays specific attention to the time elements, it is an important type of traditional Chinese acupuncture. In Nei Jing, it is maintained that man corresponds to heaven and earth, both natural phenomena in the universe and energy circulation in the human body can be calculated by reference to the pattern of stems and branches with stems representing heaven and branches representing earth. This is why stems are also called the heavenly stems and branches are called the earthly branches. There are two basic words used to represent two periods of time: namely, Zi (or Tzu in older pinyin) stands for the first period of time daily which is 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., and Wu stands for the 7th period of time which is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. A Chinese medical classic says, "Yang begins prior to the Zi period and ends after the Wu period. Yin begins after the Wu period and ends before the Zi period; yin and yang are in abundance and in decline according to different periods of time; they begin and end without a stop."

Book excerpt: In this essential text, the authors explore concepts from the Su Wen, Ling Shu and Nan Jing to bring us a view of ideas that flowered in an age rich with Chinese medical history. They discuss the philosophical and theoretical development of the five-phase system, in particular the relationship of five phases to the I Ching, Tao Te Ching, and other classical Chinese texts, then present the correspondences that a practitioner can apply to the problems of diagnosis and treatment. The diagnostic section is a complete and practical discussion of technique, including pulse, body type, visual diagnosis, and hara or abdominal diagnosis. The treatment section describes basic exercises, breathing techniques, treatment principles, and techniques from eminent classical texts. Modern treatment protocols are presented in clear, easy to use tables. It is one of the best sources of technique currently available and it reaches beyond technique to the art of healing.
