Book Synopsis Verbal Complement Clauses by : Claudia Felser
Download or read book Verbal Complement Clauses written by Claudia Felser and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines the syntax of bare infinitival and participial complements of perception verbs in English and other European languages, and investigates the general conditions under which verbal complement clauses are licensed. The introductory chapter is followed by an overview of the major syntactic and semantic characteristics of non-finite complements of perception verbs in English. The third chapter presents an analysis within the framework of Chomsky's (1995) Minimalist Program according to which event-denoting complements are minimally realised as projections of an aspectual head. In the next chapter, it is argued that verbs capable of licensing aspectual complement clauses must be able to function as a special type of control predicate, an assumption which is shown to account for a number of seemingly unrelated properties of the constructions under consideration. The final chapter examines syntactically reduced clausal complements from a cross-linguistic perspective, showing that Southern Romance languages differ from Germanic ones with respect to the availability of 'bare' aspectual complement clauses, a difference that is attributed to morphological properties of verbs in these languages.

Book Synopsis Explorations in English Historical Syntax by : Hubert Cuyckens
Download or read book Explorations in English Historical Syntax written by Hubert Cuyckens and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume cover a wide range of interrelated syntactic phenomena, from the history of core arguments, to complements and non-finite clauses, elements in the clause periphery, as well as elements with potential scope over complete sentences and even larger discourse chunks. In one way or another, however, they all testify to an increasing awareness that even some of the most central phenomena of syntax – and the way they develop over time – are best understood by taking into account their communicative functions and the way they are processed and represented by speakers’ cognitive apparatus. In doing so, they show that historical syntax, and historical linguistics in general, is witnessing a convergence between formerly distinct linguistic frameworks and traditions. With this fusion of traditions, the trend is undeniably towards a richer and more broadly informed understanding of syntactic change and the history of English. This volume will be of great interest to scholars of (English) historical syntax and historical linguistics within the cognitive-linguistic as well as the generative tradition.

Book Synopsis From Pseudo-relatives to Causative Constructions by : Mara Frascarelli
Download or read book From Pseudo-relatives to Causative Constructions written by Mara Frascarelli and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume proposes a novel structural analysis for causative constructions, offering a solution for the long-standing mono/bi-clausal dualism. Causatives are claimed to instantiate a ‘complex object’ construction, insofar as the causee is not only the subject of the lexical verb, but also a participant that is related to the whole event. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that the realization of causatives implies a crucial interplay with the pseudo-relative construction, a much-debated structure as well. Data from Scandinavian languages are highlighted, through the results of an experimental test on the scope of negation and adverbs supporting the present analysis. The book offers a cross-linguistic perspective as it discusses the relevant constructions in languages including Italian, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.

Book Synopsis Causatives and Transitivity by : Bernard Comrie
Download or read book Causatives and Transitivity written by Bernard Comrie and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1993-09-09 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together 18 typological studies of causative and related constructions (transitivity, voice, other expressions of cause) by 19 scholars from North America, Western Europe, and Russia. The inspirations for the volume is the pioneering work on causative constructions by the Leningrad Typology Group; several of the contributors have close connections to the charter members of that group, others have appreciated this work from a distance. The volume as a whole is based on the concept of causative constructions as embracing both morphology and syntax, with an important semantic component as well. In addition to general studies concerning the morpho syntactic and semantic typology and the history of causative constructions and relations to other phenomena, the following individual languages are treated in detail: Russian, English, Dutch, Svan, Even, Korean, Yukaghir, Alutor, Aleut, Haruai, Dogon, Athabaskan languages. The volume will be of interest to typologists, to other linguists interested in causative constructions and transitivity relations, and to all who are interested in the linguistic expression of causal relations.
Book Synopsis Semi-lexical Categories by : Norbert Corver
Download or read book Semi-lexical Categories written by Norbert Corver and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-22 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinction between functional categories and lexical categories is at the heart of present-day grammatical theory, in theories on language acquisition, code-switching and aphasia. At the same time, it has become clear, however, that there are many lexical items for which it is less easy to decide whether they side with the lexical categories or the functional ones. This book deals with the grammatical behavior of such in- between-categories, which are referred to here as "semi-lexical categories".

Book Synopsis Individuality in Language Change by : Lynn Anthonissen
Download or read book Individuality in Language Change written by Lynn Anthonissen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linguists have typically studied language change at the aggregate level of speech communities, yet key mechanisms of change such as analogy and automation operate within the minds of individual language users. Drawing on lifespan data from 50 authors and the intriguing case of the special passives in the history of English, this study addresses three fundamental issues relating to individuality in language change: (i) how variation and change at the individual level interact with change at the community level; (ii) how much innovation and change is possible across the adult lifespan; (iii) and to what extent related linguistic patterns are associated in individual cognition. As one of the first large-scale empirical studies to systematically link individual- and community-based perspectives in language change, this volume breaks new ground in our understanding of language as a complex adaptive system.

Book Synopsis Dravidian Syntax and Universal Grammar by : K.A. Jayaseelan
Download or read book Dravidian Syntax and Universal Grammar written by K.A. Jayaseelan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises twenty eight papers selected from the widely known work of K.A. Jayaseelan and R. Amritavalli on Dravidian. Collectively, these papers cover the entire area of Dravidian syntax: they range from broad questions such as sentence structure and word order to more particular questions such as the morphological basis of anaphora, the genesis of lexical categories, the morpho-syntax of quantifiers, and the syntax and semantics of questions. Important universalist claims are embedded in these essays; for this reason, this volume will be of interest also to a student of the general theory of syntax. No future discussion of Dravidian (or South Asian) languages is possible without taking into account the insightful analyses set forth in these pages.
