This book was released on 2006-07-10 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the latest achievements of the Theory of Classes of Finite Groups. It introduces some unpublished and fundamental advances in this Theory and provides a new insight into some classic facts in this area. By gathering the research of many authors scattered in hundreds of papers the book contributes to the understanding of the structure of finite groups by adapting and extending the successful techniques of the Theory of Finite Soluble Groups.

Book Synopsis New Horizons in pro-p Groups by : Marcus du Sautoy
Download or read book New Horizons in pro-p Groups written by Marcus du Sautoy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pro-p group is the inverse limit of some system of finite p-groups, that is, of groups of prime-power order where the prime - conventionally denoted p - is fixed. Thus from one point of view, to study a pro-p group is the same as studying an infinite family of finite groups; but a pro-p group is also a compact topological group, and the compactness works its usual magic to bring 'infinite' problems down to manageable proportions. The p-adic integers appeared about a century ago, but the systematic study of pro-p groups in general is a fairly recent development. Although much has been dis covered, many avenues remain to be explored; the purpose of this book is to present a coherent account of the considerable achievements of the last several years, and to point the way forward. Thus our aim is both to stimulate research and to provide the comprehensive background on which that research must be based. The chapters cover a wide range. In order to ensure the most authoritative account, we have arranged for each chapter to be written by a leading contributor (or contributors) to the topic in question. Pro-p groups appear in several different, though sometimes overlapping, contexts.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Algebra by : Peter Jephson Cameron
Download or read book Introduction to Algebra written by Peter Jephson Cameron and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an undergraduate textbook on abstract algebra, beginning with the theories of rings and groups. As this is the first really abstract material students need, the pace here is gentle, and the basic concepts of subring, homomorphism, ideal, etc are developed in detail. Later, asstudents gain confidence with abstractions, they are led to further developments in group and ring theory (simple groups and extensions, Noetherian rings, and outline of universal algebra, lattices and categories) and to applications such as Galois theory and coding theory. There is also a chapteroutlining the construction of the number systems from scratch and proving in three different ways that trascendental numbers exist.
Book Synopsis New Directions in Locally Compact Groups by : Pierre-Emmanuel Caprace
Download or read book New Directions in Locally Compact Groups written by Pierre-Emmanuel Caprace and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of expository articles by a range of established experts and newer researchers provides an overview of the recent developments in the theory of locally compact groups. It includes introductory articles on totally disconnected locally compact groups, profinite groups, p-adic Lie groups and the metric geometry of locally compact groups. Concrete examples, including groups acting on trees and Neretin groups, are discussed in detail. An outline of the emerging structure theory of locally compact groups beyond the connected case is presented through three complementary approaches: Willis' theory of the scale function, global decompositions by means of subnormal series, and the local approach relying on the structure lattice. An introduction to lattices, invariant random subgroups and L2-invariants, and a brief account of the Burger–Mozes construction of simple lattices are also included. A final chapter collects various problems suggesting future research directions.

Book Synopsis Categories for Types by : Roy L. Crole
Download or read book Categories for Types written by Roy L. Crole and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explains the basic principles of categorical type theory and the techniques used to derive categorical semantics for specific type theories. It introduces the reader to ordered set theory, lattices and domains, and this material provides plenty of examples for an introduction to category theory, which covers categories, functors, natural transformations, the Yoneda lemma, cartesian closed categories, limits, adjunctions and indexed categories. Four kinds of formal system are considered in detail, namely algebraic, functional, polymorphic functional, and higher order polymorphic functional type theory. For each of these the categorical semantics are derived and results about the type systems are proved categorically. Issues of soundness and completeness are also considered. Aimed at advanced undergraduates and beginning graduates, this book will be of interest to theoretical computer scientists, logicians and mathematicians specializing in category theory.

Book Synopsis A Survey of Lie Groups and Lie Algebras with Applications and Computational Methods by : Johan G. F. Belinfante
Download or read book A Survey of Lie Groups and Lie Algebras with Applications and Computational Methods written by Johan G. F. Belinfante and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduces the concepts and methods of the Lie theory in a form accessible to the non-specialist by keeping mathematical prerequisites to a minimum. Although the authors have concentrated on presenting results while omitting most of the proofs, they have compensated for these omissions by including many references to the original literature. Their treatment is directed toward the reader seeking a broad view of the subject rather than elaborate information about technical details. Illustrations of various points of the Lie theory itself are found throughout the book in material on applications. In this reprint edition, the authors have resisted the temptation of including additional topics. Except for correcting a few minor misprints, the character of the book, especially its focus on classical representation theory and its computational aspects, has not been changed.
