Book excerpt: For hundreds of years, indigenous populations have developed drugs based on medicinal plants. Many practitioners, especially advocates of traditional medicine, continue to support the use of plants and functional foods as methods by which many ailments can be treated. With relevance around the world as a complementary and alternative medicine, advancements for the use of both ethnopharmacology and nutraceuticals in disease must continually be explored, especially as society works to combat chronic illnesses, increasingly resilient infectious diseases, and pain management controversies. The Research Anthology on Recent Advancements in Ethnopharmacology and Nutraceuticals discusses the advancements made in herbal medicines and functional foods that can be used as alternative medical treatments for a variety of illness and chronic diseases. The anthology will further explain the benefits that they provide as well as the possible harm they may do without proper research on the subject. Covering topics such as food additives, dietary supplements, and physiological benefits, this text is an important resource for dieticians, pharmacists, doctors, nurses, medical professionals, medical students, hospital administrators, researchers, and academicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomedical research is the first step towards the creation of new medications and treatments that help to manage different types of health conditions and diseases. The prevention and cure of diseases would be practically impossible without such type of research. Although the drug discovery and development processes are far too costly, time-consuming, prone to failure, and have low success rate, today the term "translational research or medicine" seems to have become trendy, yet it is insufficient. The present book is a sincere attempt by dedicated researchers to convey the importance of translational biomedical research, medicine, and disease, primarily, basic and clinical difficulties in the translation of diagnostic measures, pharmaceutical advances, biomarkers, diagnostics, and therapeutics. This book is meant for researchers, scientists, healthcare professionals, industry, innovators, and students of biomedical sciences, as well as for those involved in the basic sciences, biochemistry, biotechnology, biophysics, and life sciences in general. The volume comprehensively covers: Emerging technologies for health care Various aspects of biomedical research toward understanding of pathophysiology of the diseases Advances in improvement in diagnostic procedures and therapeutic tools The fundamental role of biomedical research in the development of new medicinal products

Book excerpt: Malaysia is one of the few countries in the world with well-established health system that provide universal coverage of essential services to its citizen. The country is blessed with multi-ethnic societies rich with cultural heritage. Traditional and Complementary Medicine (T&CM) based on Malay, Chinese and Indian practice modalities have been in existence for more than a century. In 2006, the government of Malaysia took a bold step to formally integrate T&CM into the national health system of Malaysia. This book reports the outcome of a study conducted among health professionals in five major hospitals in Malaysia covering their knowledge, practical experience and attitudes toward T&CM. Four of the hospitals were integrated hospitals providing various modalities of T&CM to patients on regular basis. Qualitative and quantitative methods were employed in the study in order to obtain valid and reliable information from the respondents. Doctors, nurses and pharmacists practicing modern medicine in these five hospitals filled up self-administered questionnaires. The respondents were subsequently selected to participate in a more detail in-depth interviews. The book provides the best reference on the acceptance of T&CM in the modern health system that can be used as guide to policy makers in other parts of the world that plan to embark on the similar policies.

Under the larger perspective of the development and evolution of Eastern and Western medicine, biology, and even natural science for hundreds of years, this book follows the evolution of modern scientific methods and reveals the inevitable trend of future medicine—holistic medicine. Holistic medicine is a medical system that fully integrates Chinese and Western medical methods and knowledge systems and conforms to scientific norms. It is an evidence-based medicine that embodies the holistic concept and individualized principles. This book outlines the method and theoretical framework of holistic medicine, and provides the method of constructing the theoretical system and using it to achieve the best regulation of diseases. It can be expected that holistic medicine will become the mainstream medicine in the 21st century.

The book covers definitions, cost, safety, regulation, legal and ethical questions and a range of practical issues, diagnostic techniques, and risk-benefit assessments of CAM modalities. The main part of the book is organised by condition, outlining for each the CAM treatments available, ranked according to level of evidence of effectiveness, followed by a concise clinical bottom line assessing risks and benefits, also in relation to conventional treatment. The information is presented in a concise, matter-of-fact fashion, avoiding the obscure jargon sometimes used in CAM. Many issues surrounding CAM remain controversial and this handbook discusses them openly and critically.

This book was released on 2019-02-09 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some time now, the professional and general public in the Czech Republic have been receiving incomplete and often biased information on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Leading European and world authorities – the World Health Organization (WHO), the Council of Europe, European research CAMbrella funded by the European Commission, European network EUROCAM, are all entirely in favour of CAM, and without exception recommend CAM research and integration into the routine care. The contradiction between 'here and there' is literally explosive. The 'world' is entirely elsewhere. Respective details are given in the information publication 'Alternative Medicine (CAM) in the World', published by the Professional Chamber Sanator – the Union of Biotronicists of Josef Zezulka. Our Professional Chamber has recently become a member of ANME – Association for Natural Medicine in Europe, EUAA – European Ayurveda Association and joined the European Commission’s EU Health Policy Platform. We hope that our activities will contribute to the education of the professional public in the realm of CAM.
