Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The noetic model is the first theory of any kind to explain qualia in physical terms. The formal delineation of the life principle or élan vital explains not only the origin of self-organisation in living systems, providing the basis for the first comprehensive dualist theory, but also is what makes the model empirically testable allowing this volume to make history. The floodgates are about to open to almost unimaginable advances in the field of consciousness studies. This book introduces a comprehensive empirically testable model of dualism-interactionism to legitimise the interactionist model at a level tantamount to any other avenue of epistemological investigation.

Book Synopsis A Psychology of Complementarity by : Timothy J. Ridley
Download or read book A Psychology of Complementarity written by Timothy J. Ridley and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This hermeneutic research attempts to address the mind and body problem using complementarity from quantum physics and dual aspect monism from philosophy. Quantum mechanics and dual-aspect monism offer ways to explain complex phenomena that include aspects that are seemingly contradictory. In quantum physics, wave–particle complementarity describes how an atom is both a particle and a wave. In dual-aspect monism, the underlying domain of the universe is neither physical nor mental, but these are both aspects of the ontology. Applying these ideas from quantum mechanics and dual-aspect monism to the existing paradigms within psychology provides different perspectives on the mind-body problem. To begin the process of applying these theories, the physis is imagined to be a particle and the psyche is imagined to be a wave. Complementarity is then used to explore the psyche and the physis. Psyche and physis are also surveyed using dual aspect monism. As the psyche and physis are explored as two different aspects of one ontology, this research attempts to examine how this would manifest within our existence, and what the theories would mean for the splits within the field of psychology. This research found that the frame used to approach psychology (psyche or physis) impacts the results, and trying to approach psychology without using one aspect or the other is difficult to symbolize, and or practice. For depth psychology, this research has shown that retreating entirely to the imaginal or the unconscious may be an unbalanced approach.

Book Synopsis Mind-Body Entanglement by : Pierre Uzan
Download or read book Mind-Body Entanglement written by Pierre Uzan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book suggests a radical departure in approaching the mind-body problem. Instead of trying to causally relate subjective experience to the functioning of the body, it begins with the notion of the psychosomatic unity of the individual and looks for its conditions of possibility. This text shows that what makes this unity possible is the generalized entanglement relation that connects a person's subjective experience with its body functioning in a specific way.In addition to providing a significant contribution to the long-standing philosophical debate about the nature of the mind-body connection, this change of perspective based on the concept of generalized entanglement allows for exploring a holistic approach to health. It can for example explain the existence of body memory and leads to a better understanding of the genesis and evolution of internal diseases, allowing for the development of mind-body therapies. This volume also provides new insights into mental disorders and sets the theoretical basis of self-healing methods appealing to students, researchers and professionals in the fields.

Book Synopsis The Method and Principles of Complementary Reflection in and Beyond African Philosophy by : Innocent Asouzu
Download or read book The Method and Principles of Complementary Reflection in and Beyond African Philosophy written by Innocent Asouzu and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2005 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions relating to types of philosophical trends within African philosophy can be very decisive for any idea of African philosophy. In this strikingly novel approach to African Philosophy, the author explores a complementary philosophical trend that goes back to those he calls anonymous traditional African philosophers. Based on their thoughts, he articulates a distinctive variant of the principles, method and imperative of complementarity (Ibu anyi danda) around which he builds his system. He anchors his reflection on such ambient concepts as the joy of being (jide k' iji), fragmentation, wholeness, and future reference.

Book Synopsis Holism in Philosophy of Mind and Philosophy of Physics by : M. Esfeld
Download or read book Holism in Philosophy of Mind and Philosophy of Physics written by M. Esfeld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-06-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of this book is a comparison between holism in the philosophy and language and social holism on the one hand and holism about space-time and quantum systems on the other hand. The main claim is that holism in the humanities and holism in fundamental physics come under the same substantial, general conception of holism. That is to say: arguments to the effect that the holism of the mental is unscientific or that the mental is separated from the physical owing to holism are not sound. The holism of the mental fits into a world-view that bases itself on scientific realism. The addressees of this book are all those who care about our view of the world and ourselves in the spirit of an argumentative examination of different positions. No familiarity with physics is presupposed.

Possible solutions to basic and practical problems facing contemporary biology and biomedical sciences have been suggested, including pharmacotherapeutics and personalized medicine.
Book Synopsis From Tao to Psychology by : Julian Laboy
Download or read book From Tao to Psychology written by Julian Laboy and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Western territories, the last two centuries have been demanding many so-called scientific fields of study a set of ideas that would change some of their traditional worldviews. These new ideas come from another set of worldviews that run parallel or have very similar discursive direction to traditional Eastern perspectives. In the West, this is happening in the fields of Psychology, Biology, Neurosciences, Physics, and others. On the other hand, Eastern perspectives that share similar views with the relatively new Western ideas are Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism. This book will concentrate on the example of the similarities between specific theories in Psychology and Classical Taoism. Those similarities can be seen in three themes: union or separation of mind and body; union or separation of reason and emotions; and, finally, the construction or representation of knowledge. The primary goal is to see the possibilities of sharing and learning from both sides of the world; to walk a bridge that unites them. This is an introduction to the communication between East and West that is already taking place in many parts of the world.
Book Synopsis Cell Language Theory, The: Connecting Mind And Matter by : Sungchul Ji
Download or read book Cell Language Theory, The: Connecting Mind And Matter written by Sungchul Ji and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the results of 45 years of research on a wide range of topics, including atomic physics, single-molecule enzymology, whole-cell metabolism, physiology, pharmacology, linguistics, semiotics, and cosmology. It describes the first comprehensive molecular theory of the genotype-phenotype coupling based on two key theoretical concepts: (i) the conformon, the conformational wave packet in biopolymers carrying both the free energy and genetic information; and (ii) the intracellular dissipative structures, the chemical concentration waves inside the cell that serve as the immediate drivers of all cell functions. Conformons provide the driving forces for all molecular machines in the cell, and intracellular dissipative structures coordinate intra- and intercellular processes such as gene expression and cell-cell communications. One of the predictions made by the cell language theory (CLT) is that there are two forms of genetic information — the Watson-Crick genes transmitting information in time (identified with DNA), and the Prigoginian genes transmitting information in space (identified with RNA expression profiles). The former is analogous to sheet music or written language and the latter is akin to audio music or spoken language, both being coupled by conformons acting as the analog of the pianist. The new theory of DNA structure and function constructed on the basis of CLT can rationally account for most of the puzzling findings recently unearthed by the ENCODE (Encyclopedia of DNA Elements) project. The Cell Language Theory has important applications in biomedical sciences including drug discovery research and personalized medicine on the one hand and in the mind-body research and consciousness studies on the other.

Download or read book Mind in Life written by Evan Thompson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is life related to the mind? The question has long confounded philosophers and scientists, and it is this so-called explanatory gap between biological life and consciousness that Evan Thompson explores in Mind in Life. Thompson draws upon sources as diverse as molecular biology, evolutionary theory, artificial life, complex systems theory, neuroscience, psychology, Continental Phenomenology, and analytic philosophy to argue that mind and life are more continuous than has previously been accepted, and that current explanations do not adequately address the myriad facets of the biology and phenomenology of mind. Where there is life, Thompson argues, there is mind: life and mind share common principles of self-organization, and the self-organizing features of mind are an enriched version of the self-organizing features of life. Rather than trying to close the explanatory gap, Thompson marshals philosophical and scientific analyses to bring unprecedented insight to the nature of life and consciousness. This synthesis of phenomenology and biology helps make Mind in Life a vital and long-awaited addition to his landmark volume The Embodied Mind: Cognitive Science and Human Experience (coauthored with Eleanor Rosch and Francisco Varela). Endlessly interesting and accessible, Mind in Life is a groundbreaking addition to the fields of the theory of the mind, life science, and phenomenology.
Book Synopsis The Origins of Health and Disease by : Michael E. Hyland
Download or read book The Origins of Health and Disease written by Michael E. Hyland and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some phenomena in medicine and psychology remain unexplained by current theory. Chronic fatigue syndrome, repetitive strain injury and irritable bowel syndrome, for example, are all diseases or syndromes that cannot be explained in terms of a physiological abnormality. In this intriguing book, Michael E. Hyland proposes that there is a currently unrecognised type of illness which he calls 'dysregulatory disease'. Hyland shows how such diseases develop and how the communication and art of medicine, good nursing care, complementary medicine and psychotherapy can all act to reduce the dysregulation that leads to dysregulatory disease. The Origins of Health and Disease is a fascinating book that develops a novel theory for understanding health and disease, and demonstrates how this theory is supported by existing data, and how it explains currently unexplained phenomena. Hyland also shows how his theory leads to new testable predictions that, in turn, will lead to further scientific advancement and development.
Book Synopsis The Elementary Process Theory by : Marcoen Cabbolet
Download or read book The Elementary Process Theory written by Marcoen Cabbolet and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the one hand, theories of modern physics are very successful in their areas of application. But on the other hand, the irreconcilability of General Relativity (GR) and Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) suggests that these theories of modern physics are not the final answer regarding the fundamental workings of the universe. This monograph takes the position that the key to advances in the foundations of physics lies in the hypothesis that massive systems made up of antimatter are repulsed by the gravitational field of a body of ordinary matter: this hypothesis takes us to an uncharted territory where GR and QED do not hold up. From there the Elementary Process Theory (EPT) is developed: this is a collection of seven generalized process-physical principles that do hold up if the hypothesis is a fact of nature. Using four-dimensionalistic terminology, the EPT abstractly describes an elementary process in the temporal evolution of a massive system that interacts with its environment. The idea is that these elementary processes take place at Planck scale and are essentially all the same, regardless of the type of interaction that takes place: the EPT is thus intended as a candidate for a unifying scheme that applies to all four basic interactions. By mathematical modeling, the relation is explored between the EPT and classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, special relativity and GR.
