Book excerpt: Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo diagnosticar o estágio de desenvolvimento da Cadeia Produtiva do Abacaxi no Estado de Goiás, comparando o seu desempenho competitivo em relação a cadeia produtiva semelhante no Estado de Tocantins. O conceito de cadeia produtiva e a metodologia de análise foram propostos por Castro, Lima e Hoeflich, 2000. O estudo priorizou os elos sistema produtivo e consumidores. A análise de consumidores enfocou a qualidade e quantidade de produtos, utilizando-se da técnica de survey, entrevistando consumidores nos mercados nos mercados de Brasília e Goiânia, principais mercados do abacaxi produzido em Goiás. A análise do sistema produtivo enfocou a eficiência e qualidade dos produtos finais. As informações primárias foram coletadas pela técnica do Rapid Rural Appraisal - RRA com entrevistas semi-estruturadas a informantes chaves da Cadeia Produtiva. Como resultados, foram identificados quatro fatores críticos associados ao desempenho inferior da Cadeia Produtiva de Goiás, quando comparada à Cadeia Produtiva do Tocantins: o maior impacto, na eficiência da produção e na qualidade dos frutos, provocado pela severidade do ataque da fusariose em Goiás; a impossibilidade do plantio durante todo o ano, limitando a colheita em épocas de preços mais favoráveis; a ausência de agroindústrias, que limita a agregação de valor ao fruto in natura e o atendimento às demandas dos consumidores; e a ausência de associações de produtores rurais, limitante dos processos produtivos e comercialização. Com relação à qualidade dos produtos, constatou-se que a Cadeia de Goiás, embora possua condições de atender aos anseios dos consumidores por frutos doces, pouco ácidos e com maturação adequada, produz frutos menores e em épocas de preços mais desfavoráveis, quando comparada à Cadeia do Tocantins. Estes fatores têm forte impacto na rentabilidade da atividade, que é menor no sistema produtivo de Goiás do que a rentabilidade obtida no Tocantins. Estes resultados permitiram a proposição de estratégias para gestão da competitividade na Cadeia Produtiva de Goiás.
