Book Synopsis Mathematics, Education and History by : Kathleen M. Clark
Download or read book Mathematics, Education and History written by Kathleen M. Clark and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes 18 peer-reviewed papers from nine countries, originally presented in a shorter form at TSG 25 The Role of History of Mathematics in Mathematics Education, as part of ICME-13 during. It also features an introductory chapter, by its co-editors, on the structure and main points of the book with an outline of recent developments in exploring the role of history and epistemology in mathematics education. It serves as a valuable contribution in this domain, by making reports on recent developments in this field available to the international educational community, with a special focus on relevant research results since 2000. The 18 chapters of the book are divided into five interrelated parts that underlie the central issues of research in this domain: 1. Theoretical and conceptual frameworks for integrating history and epistemology in mathematics in mathematics education; 2. Courses and didactical material: Design, implementation and evaluation; 3. Empirical investigations on implementing history and epistemology in mathematics education; 4. Original historical sources in teaching and learning of and about mathematics; 5. History and epistemology of mathematics: Interdisciplinary teaching and sociocultural aspects. This book covers all levels of education, from primary school to tertiary education, with a particular focus on teacher education. Additionally, each chapter refers to and/or is based on empirical research, in order to support, illuminate, clarify and evaluate key issues, main questions, and conjectured theses raised by the authors or in the literature on the basis of historical-epistemological or didactical-cognitive arguments.

Book Synopsis Classification and Orbit Equivalence Relations by : Greg Hjorth
Download or read book Classification and Orbit Equivalence Relations written by Greg Hjorth and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Actions of Polish groups are ubiquitous in mathematics. In certain branches of ergodic theory and functional analysis, one finds a systematic study of the group of measure-preserving transformations and the unitary group. In logic, the analysis of countable models intertwines with results concerning the actions of the infinite symmetric group. This text develops the theory of Polish group actions entirely from scratch, ultimately presenting a coherent theory of the resulting orbit equivalence classes that may allow complete classification by invariants of an indicated form. The book concludes with a criterion for an orbit equivalence relation classifiable by countable structures considered up to isomorphism. This self-contained volume offers a complete treatment of this active area of current research and develops a difficult general theory classifying a class of mathematical objects up to some relevant notion of isomorphism or equivalence.
Book Synopsis Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K-12 by : Peter Liljedahl
Download or read book Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K-12 written by Peter Liljedahl and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thinking student is an engaged student Teachers often find it difficult to implement lessons that help students go beyond rote memorization and repetitive calculations. In fact, institutional norms and habits that permeate all classrooms can actually be enabling "non-thinking" student behavior. Sparked by observing teachers struggle to implement rich mathematics tasks to engage students in deep thinking, Peter Liljedahl has translated his 15 years of research into this practical guide on how to move toward a thinking classroom. Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K–12 helps teachers implement 14 optimal practices for thinking that create an ideal setting for deep mathematics learning to occur. This guide Provides the what, why, and how of each practice and answers teachers’ most frequently asked questions Includes firsthand accounts of how these practices foster thinking through teacher and student interviews and student work samples Offers a plethora of macro moves, micro moves, and rich tasks to get started Organizes the 14 practices into four toolkits that can be implemented in order and built on throughout the year When combined, these unique research-based practices create the optimal conditions for learner-centered, student-owned deep mathematical thinking and learning, and have the power to transform mathematics classrooms like never before.
Book Synopsis A History of Algorithms by : Jean-Luc Chabert
Download or read book A History of Algorithms written by Jean-Luc Chabert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of computing has reawakened interest in algorithms. Often neglected by historians and modern scientists, algorithmic procedures have been instrumental in the development of fundamental ideas: practice led to theory just as much as the other way round. The purpose of this book is to offer a historical background to contemporary algorithmic practice.

Book Synopsis Dynamical Systems III by : Vladimir I. Arnol'd
Download or read book Dynamical Systems III written by Vladimir I. Arnol'd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work describes the fundamental principles, problems, and methods of elassical mechanics focussing on its mathematical aspects. The authors have striven to give an exposition stressing the working apparatus of elassical mechanics, rather than its physical foundations or applications. This appara tus is basically contained in Chapters 1, 3,4 and 5. Chapter 1 is devoted to the fundamental mathematical models which are usually employed to describe the motion of real mechanical systems. Special consideration is given to the study of motion under constraints, and also to problems concerned with the realization of constraints in dynamics. Chapter 3 is concerned with the symmetry groups of mechanical systems and the corresponding conservation laws. Also discussed are various aspects of the theory of the reduction of order for systems with symmetry, often used in applications. Chapter 4 contains abrief survey of various approaches to the problem of the integrability of the equations of motion, and discusses some of the most general and effective methods of integrating these equations. Various elassical examples of integrated problems are outlined. The material pre sen ted in this chapter is used in Chapter 5, which is devoted to one of the most fruitful branches of mechanics - perturbation theory. The main task of perturbation theory is the investigation of problems of mechanics which are" elose" to exact1y integrable problems.
