Estudió en París con el neurólogo francés Jean-Martin Charcot las aplicaciones de la hipnosisen el tratamiento de la histeria. De vuelta a la ciudad de Viena y en colaboración con Josef Breuer desarrolló elmétodo catártico. Paulatinamente, reemplazó tanto la sugestión hipnótica como el método catártico por laasociación libre y la interpretación de los sueños. De igual modo, la búsqueda inicial centrada en la rememoración de los traumas psicógenos como productores de síntomas fue abriendo paso al desarrollo de una teoría etiológicade las neurosis más diferenciada. Todo esto se convirtió en el punto de partida del psicoanálisis, al que se dedicó ininterrumpidamente el resto de su vida.El propósito de este compendio es reunir los principios del psicoanálisis y confirmarlos, como si de dogmas se tratara, en una forma la más concisa posible y expuestos en los términos más inequívocos. La intención no es, por supuesto, promover credulidad o despertar convicción. Las enseñanzas del psicoanálisis están basadas en un número incalculable de observaciones y experiencia y sólo aquél que ha repetido estas observaciones en sí mismo y en los demás está en una posición de alcanzar un juicio personal sobre ellas.

En la praxis analítica, la única receta válida frente a una situa- ción dada es compulsar y contrastar todos los elementos de juicio disponibles y elegir luego el camino que nos parezca más conveniente, sabiendo que cada momento es irrepetible e incomparable. No puede haber, por cierto, una praxis que no se sustente en la teoría, y ningún psicoanalista duda de que entre teoría y práctica hay un camino de ida y vuelta, de que una realimenta, enriquece y depura a la otra; pero yo tengo, además, la viva impresión, aunque tal vez me equivoque, de que si partimos de la práctica podemos abordar mejor los problemas teóricos que cuando estudiamos y comparamos las teorías entre sí.
