Book excerpt: Only a few are brave enough to fall . . . When Raini desperately needed help, she went to the one person who she knew could save her dying friend . . . her secretive and ruthlessly powerful anchor, Maddox. His price was that she grant him access to her life, yet he's still determined not to form the anchor bond with Raini. That rejection stings, even while she can't stop her body - or her demon - reacting to his presence. Maddox is a descendent, a rare breed of demon possessing angelic blood - and Raini knows he'll let someone close when hell freezes over. As a succubus, she's used to men wanting her uncontrollably - and used to having all the power. But while Maddox wants her strictly on his own terms, for the first time she can remember Raini's struggling to keep her own emotions in check. Yet when someone - or something - starts to target Raini, Maddox's protectiveness goes into overdrive. Suddenly he's finding it harder to keep his secrets and his distance, for nothing seems to matter as much as Raini. As the threat escalates into all-out war, they both have to decide: can they trust the other to catch them if they fall? In this unusual and remarkably readable collection of short essays on a wide variety of hot-button public issues--race, affirmative action, surrogate motherhood, diversity, immigration, compensation of 9/11 victims, exclusion of gays from the Boy Scouts and the military, the 2004 election, the rule of law in developing countries, the invasion of Iraq, and many more--Yale Law School professor Peter H. Schuck reveals the distinctive sensibility and policy orientation of a militant moderate: pragmatic, reformist, nonideological, empirically minded, and skeptical of many liberal and conservative pieties.

Book excerpt: Las Raras proposes that the Modernistas’ advocacy for a writing style they considered feminine helps us to understand why so few (and perhaps no) women were accepted as active participants in Modernismo. Author Sarah Moody studies how particular writers contributed to the idea of a feminine aesthetic and tracks the intellectual networks of Modernismo through periodicals and personal papers, such as albums and correspondence. Buenos Aires, Paris, and Montevideo figure prominently in this transatlantic study, which reexamines some of the most important period writers in Spanish, including Rubén Darío, Amado Nervo, and Enrique Gómez Carrillo. This book also considers the critiques launched by women writers, such as Aurora Cáceres, Clorinda Matto de Turner, and María Eugenia Vaz Ferreira, who experienced Modernista exclusion firsthand, deconstructed the Modernista discourse of a modern, “feminine” style, and built literary success in alternative terms. These writers reoriented the discussion about women in modernity to address women’s education, professionalization, and advocacy for social and civic improvements. In this study, Modernismo emerges as both a literary style and an intellectual network, in which style and sociability are mutually determining and combine to form a system of prestige and validation that excluded women writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled within 'The Complete Works of Louisa May Alcott' is a treasure trove of 19th-century American literature that spans the gamut of novels, short stories, poetry, and plays. Reflecting a rich tapestry of autobiographical elements intermingled with fictional narratives, Alcott's literary style oscillates between the tender nuances of domestic life and the broader themes of social reform resonant of her era. This anthology, starting with the cherished 'Little Women' series and extending to lesser-known works such as 'Work: A Story of Experience,' lays the groundwork for an exploration of womanhood, family bonds, and individual growth against the backdrop of a society grappling with the tides of change. Alcott's oeuvre unfolds as a palette colored by her personal experiences and convictions. A devoted abolitionist and feminist, Alcott infuses her prose with the principles she staunchly supported. 'Little Women' alone stands as a testament to her ingenuity and foresight, presenting a female-centric narrative that transcends its time in both resonance and relevance. The comprehensive array sketches the autobiographical to the fantastical, from her vivid Civil War experiences in 'Hospital Sketches' to the fanciful flights in 'Flower Fables,' enriched by poignant reflections drawn from her letters and journals. The compilation of Alcott's writings pirouettes on the crux of historical significance and literary charm, inviting both the dedicated Alcott enthusiast and the uninitiated reader to delve into the depths of her mindful artistry. Recommending 'The Complete Works of Louisa May Alcott' is to endorse a journey through the corridors of a vibrant literary mind that continues to speak to the universality of the human experience. It beckons readers to engage not merely with stories written, but with a life lived passionately and transcribed into words that endure. As an embodiment of the literary spirit of the 19th century, this collection stands as a beacon for what it means to weave narrative and conscience into the enduring fabric of literature.
