Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in Neurolinguistics, Volume 2 provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of neurolinguistics, which represent a synthesis of the brain sciences, the behavioral sciences, and the clinical sciences. This book discusses the interesting problems of neurolinguistics. Organized into eight chapters, this volume begins with an overview of neurolinguistic analysis of a rare form of language impairment identified as mixed transcortical aphasia. This text then explains spoken language, reading ability, and writing ability in terms of both psychological and linguistic measures. Other chapters consider a theoretical discussion with supporting evidence which concludes that there is a common relationship between sequential movements of the upper limbs and verbal expression. This book discusses as well the linguistic properties of the right hemisphere and the nonlinguistic properties of the left hemisphere. The final chapter deals with analyzing evidence on cerebral localization and the linguistic features of the alexias. This book is a valuable resource for clinical neurologists, psychologists, and speech pathologists.

Book Synopsis Writing Development in Children with Hearing Loss, Dyslexia, Or Oral Language Problems by : Barbara Arfé
Download or read book Writing Development in Children with Hearing Loss, Dyslexia, Or Oral Language Problems written by Barbara Arfé and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing plays a key role in society. Yet, many children struggle in learning to write, and often this is related to difficulties in the development of their oral-language skills. For students with oral language difficulties text production is particularly challenging, yet there have been few attempts to consider the impact of different oral language problems on the production of written text. This book focuses on the relationship between oral language problems and writing problems for children with hearing loss, those with oral-language difficulties and those with dyslexia. The causes and nature of their writing problems are examined by experts in the fields. Authors from three continents and nine countries contributed their research to extend our understanding of the problems that these children face. The collection provides timely information across languages and countries, enhancing our understanding of the links between oral language problems and writing, informing both writing assessment and intervention.

Book Synopsis Studies in Verbal Behavior by : Kurt Salzinger
Download or read book Studies in Verbal Behavior written by Kurt Salzinger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in Verbal Behavior: An Empirical Approach summarizes the results of empirical studies on the variables that control verbal behavior. These studies explore the response properties of verbal behavior already acquired, with respect to size of unit, mode of emission, and the constraining effects of sentence frames. The stimulus situation in which the behavior is emitted, the use of verbal material as stimulus, and the relationship between sequential guessing of sentences and the marking off of ""idea unit"" boundaries in the same material are also discussed. This volume first introduces the reader to situations which will best allow us to view the basic lawfulness inherent in the control of verbal behavior. In particular, it explores response bias and serial effects in a modified Shannon Guessing Game and compares oral and written verbal behavior. Attention then turns to the manner in which the verbal stimulus controls various forms of behavior, paying particular attention to search time as a function of target location and frequency in language, along with some stimulus properties of syntagmatic and paradigmatic word sequences. The next section analyzes the effects of limiting the generation of sentences by length and by the presence of certain words or grammatical endings (bound morphemes) in particular positions of each sentence. Some characteristics of sentences as response units are highlighted. This book will be of value to psychologists and those who are interested in verbal behavior.
Book Synopsis Research on Written Composition by : George Hillocks (Jr.)
Download or read book Research on Written Composition written by George Hillocks (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting changes in the focus and methodology of writing research over the past 20 years, this book provides a meta-analysis of studies on teaching approaches and focuses on composition instruction at the elementary, secondary, and college levels. The first chapter of the book examines general studies of the composing process, studies of process in classrooms, and studies of planning, production factors, revision, and writing apprehension. Summaries of the limitations and key findings of the research on process are included. The second chapter explores research on the repertoire of lexical, syntactic, or rhetorical forms which writers call upon in their writing. The third chapter examines criticisms of experimental studies and the difficulties in doing them, then explains the techniques used in the meta-analysis of such studies, the selection of studies, and the variables examined. The next four chapters analyze the studies in the areas of modes of instruction, grammar and the manipulation of syntax, criteria for better writing, and invention. The eighth chapter presents the results of the meta-analysis for the dimensions examined: grade level, duration of treatment, mode of instruction, focus of instruction, revision, and feedback. The final chapter discusses the compatibility of results of treatment or method studies with those of processes studies, and offers recommendations for future research. (HTH)
