They primarily focus on understanding the issues of student-athletes and recommendations are oftentimes overly simplistic, failing to explicitly provide interventions that can be executed by student-athlete support personnel. In addition, the topic of supporting student-athletes who are academically at risk and/or are diagnosed with high incidence disabilities has been overlooked by scholars resulting in few publications specifically focusing on providing strategies to the staff/personnel who serve these populations. The general target audience is college/university practitioners who interface with student-athletes who demonstrate academic and social risk in the realm of athletics. These stakeholders include but are not limited to: academic support staff, student athletes, parents, coaches, faculty/educators, counselors, psychologists, higher education administrators, student affairs professionals, disability services coordinators/personnel, as well as researchers who focus on education leadership, sports, and special education. All of these groups are likely to find this book attractive especially as they work with student-athletes who are at-risk for academic failure. Also, it is ventured that this book will become the staple text for the National Association of Academic Advisors (N4A), the official organization for all personnel who work in collegiate academic support and can be used by members of intercollegiate athletic associations to reform policies in place to support at-risk student-athletes.

The disputes that arise have provided much of the impetus for investigation into the merit of athletic participation in relation to the impact upon academic achievement. Furthermore, in the modem high school setting, there exists a variety of options for students to meet the academic requirements for graduation, bolster their transcripts for competitive college acceptance, and pursue a number of other personal interests. At the crux of these pursuits lies the nexus of academic achievement, extra-and co-curricular involvement. In this standards-based era, much debate exists surrounding the emphasis of sports participation and the worth of such participation to the student and community. The focus of this study is to analyze potential relationships among student-athletes' overall GPA due to the level of involvement in advanced courses and co-curricular athletic programs. The implications for these findings can offer data to expand the knowledge regarding the impact of co-curricular sports on academic achievement, while including an emphasis on the quantity of advanced courses in students' schedules. It has been documented from several studies that high school athletes perform better academically than their non-athlete peers (American Sports Institute, 1995; Brand, 2007; Dilley-Knoles, Burnett, & Peak, 2010; Foltz, 1992; Fox, Barr-Anderson, Neumark-Sztainer, & Wall, 2010; Slear, 2005). However, at the collegiate level, this heightened academic achievement trend among student-athletes is not so clear. Lapchick often releases data regarding graduation rates among a select group of highly achieving teams in certain sports but not much exists in the way of a comparison of academic achievement by using student Grade Point Averages (GPA) as a measuring tool. This study examines the academic success of student-athletes by comparing the achievement of various athletic teams with students enrolled in a particular set of classes at a Division I institution. Also, in accordance with the time management explanation of student-athlete success (Byrd & Ross, 1991), GPA comparisons are conducted between athletes and non-athletes using in-season athletic hours and working hours as a level comparable variable from which to examine. Several interesting patterns emerged from the data suggesting that although time commitments among athletes and non-athletes may have somewhat of a positive effect on academic achievement, it is not necessary significant.

Book excerpt: The in-season and out-of-season effects of sports participation on academic performance vary depending on the level of play from middle school through collegiate athletics. The purpose of this study was to determine if a significant difference exists between in-season academic performance and out-of-season academic performance of student-athletes in a low-income high school. The number of students participating in high school athletics has continued to rise for 33 consecutive years as increases in the commercialization of high school athletics affect the athletic identities and academic achievement of student-athletes. Little research has been done to examine the effects of in- and out-of-season play on academic performance at the secondary level. This study examined the in- and out-of-season effects on the academic performance of 130 student-athletes in a low-income high school using a repeated measures design. The average semester GPAs of the student-athletes in- and out-of-season were compared using paired samples t-test procedures. The findings yielded positive and statistically significant differences in academic achievement in-season as compared to out-of-season at p = 0.038. Suggestions for future research include examining the effects of athletic seasons on academic achievement in individual sports and across ethnic groups, longitudinal studies, and qualitative studies to investigate the perspectives of student-athletes.

Book excerpt: This causal-comparative study with a narrative component investigated the effect athletic participation on the academic achievement of senior student-athletes and non-athletes who attended three public high schools in Eastern Tennessee. The impetus for the study was the conflicting research as it relates to the impact athletics participation had on academic success at the college and high school levels. Through student athlete and non-athlete comparisons of ACT scores and GPAs, the researcher found athletic participation did not affect academic achievement for high school seniors who graduated in 2009 from the three target high schools when compared to non-athletes. However, statistically significant and extremely significant differences were found when the ACT scores and GPAs of the male and female student- athletes were compared. Data was also collected from the target high schools' teaching staffs. The Likert scale survey items and open-ended responses from the target high schools' teachers revealed the following regarding the academic achievement of senior student-athletes: the effect of athletic participation was positive, school systems directly affect the academic achievement of senior student- athletes, parental involvement directly affects academic achievement, athletic participation and academic achievement was important in the target school community, and the effect of athletic participation on the AYP measurement was positive.

Book excerpt: With the rapid and steady growth of athletic participation, it is important that student athletes excel in the classroom and on the playing field. However, as the pressures of being a high school athlete grow, educators must seek better ways of supporting student athletes and help them understand the importance of their education. The purpose of the study was to determine if male students who participated in athletics had higher academic achievement mean scores than male students who did not participate in athletics. The study focused on measuring the cumulative grade point averages (GPAs), Algebra I end-of-course (EOC) test scores, and English II end-of-course (EOC) test scores for all male students. A causal-comparative research design was used to examine the differences in the academic performance of the male students who participated in high school athletics and those who did not participate. The research study was conducted using existing data from three high schools in Mississippi for 234 male high school students. There were 118 non-athletes and 116 athletes. Findings from the study revealed there were no statistically significant differences in cumulative GPAs, Algebra I EOC mean test scores, and English II EOC mean test scores for athletes and non-athletes. However, there was a statistically significant difference between African American male students and White male students for the mean scores of the cumulative GPAs and English II EOC test scores. The findings of the study revealed academic achievement was not affected by athletic participation. Recommendations for future research include conducting focused research on African American males and other minority groups and the implementation of high school academic support programs for student athletes.
