Book excerpt: Abstract: PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the perceived occupational prestige of physical therapy among students who attended a college at which physical therapy was a course of study and students who attended a college where physical therapy was not offered. SUBJECTS: 138 volunteers from Springfield College and 50volunteers from Emmanuel College were solicited to complete the Modified Turner & Whitfield survey. Inclusion criteria included: having to be a citizen of the United States of America, over the age of 18, have been enrolled at the college for at least two semesters, have never attended another college, university and never have studied abroad. METHODS: The researchers solicited volunteers by sitting in public venues at each college and asking students to complete the Modified Turner & Whitfield Survey. The volunteers ranked 13 professions on six dimensions including level of education, level of income, level of responsibility, level of social standing, level of usefulness and proportion of women in the profession on a six point scale. ANALYSES: Six mixed design ANOV As were used to analyze the data collected on each of the six dimensions. The professions were the within subjects factor and the institution that the subject was attending was the between subjects factor. If significance was found, a post hoc independent t-test was performed. The alpha (a) level was set at 0.01 a priori. RESULTS: Three of the six dimensions showed no difference between the two college rankings. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine differences in fundamental knowledge and clinical skill competency as perceived by occupational therapy assistant students at Radford University Carilion (RUC) versus those assessed by fieldwork educators during level II fieldwork. Two theories were used to guide this study: metacognition and The Novice to Expert Model. Retrospective data sets from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy’s COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant) Entry-Level Self-Assessment Tool and the American Occupational Therapy’s Fieldwork Performance Evaluation were analyzed using a repeated measures analysis of variance. Results of this study will be used to assist the RUC occupational therapy assistant (OTA) program director and faculty in identifying areas of instruction amenable to modification for improved instruction and student performance.
