Using PISA data in 2003, the results showed that 20% and 49% of the variance in mathematics achievement was accounted for by schools in Canada and Hong Kong. respectively. All student-level variables were significant in Canada model except family structure whereas only sex and immigration background were significant in Hong Kong model. At school level, the significant school aggregate variables had much larger effects on school average mathematics achievement in Hong Kong than those in Canada. The findings suggest that school composition has an effect on mathematics achievement over and above that of individual characteristics.

Book excerpt: In this study, the effects of student and school level variables on the mathematics achievement of 15 year old students in Canada and Japan were investigated. Participants included 27,953 students from Canada and 4,707 students from Japan. The student level variables used in this analysis included student sex, perceived teacher support, and socioeconomic status, and the school level variables included principals' perceptions of both. student and teacher morale and commitment, and student and teacher related factors affecting school climate. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to analyze data from the Programme for International Student Assessment 2003. The proportion of variance in mathematics scores attributable to schools was 20%, in Canada and 54% in Japan. In both countries, higher ratings by principals on both student commitment and morale, and student-related factors affecting school climate were linked to higher mathematics achievement. Implications for educators and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of salient student-, school-, and region-level factors on Chinese students' mathematical literacy. Secondary data from Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macao, and Chinese Taipei participants of PISA 2012 was utilized to examine (a) how problem solving skills and noncognitive learning characteristics are related to mathematical literacy, while taking into account the effect of covariates; (b) how school-level factors moderate the relationships between student level variables and mathematical literacy; and (c) how region level factors interact with the student and school level variables. Three level hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was selected as the analytic method due to its capability in exploring multilevel data. The results of this study indicated that, at student level, actual behavioral control (mathematics learning behavior and work ethic), perceived behavioral control (mathematics self-efficacy and self-concept), and problem solving skills showed positive impact on Chinese students' mathematical literacy. At school level, providing students with cognitive activation in mathematics lessons, experience with pure mathematics tasks, and mathematics extracurricular activities helped to improve mathematical literacy; however, constructivist practice, in terms of teacher behaviors on student orientation and on formative assessment, showed negative impact on their mathematical literacy. Finally, three regional factors (regional infrastructure, educational resources, and teacher shortage) interacted with applied mathematics tasks at school and problem solving skills, respectively, to conjointly impact mathematical literacy. This study also offered implications for future policy and classroom practice, such as continue considering teaching general problem solving skills as a critical aspect in mathematics education.

Book excerpt: Mathematics education has emerged to be of prime importance in the United States, as American students' performance has shown to be consistently and significantly lower than many other nations in the world (Rampey, Dion, & Donahue, 2009; National Center for Education Statistics, n.d.; OECD Programme for International Student Assessment, n.d.). Sparked by an interest to understand factors that are associated with such differential performance, mathematics education researchers have been drawn to international comparative research. In order to understand the differences and similarities between the U.S. and other countries across multiple dimensions of the learning and teaching of mathematics, curricula, and educational systems, international comparative studies in mathematics education have resulted in both in-depth, qualitative studies as well as hard, quantitative data analyses. Most prominent studies include those that compare the U.S. and other high-performing East Asian countries such as China, Korea, Singapore, and Japan, across elementary and middle school levels (Cai, 2000, 2002; Kaiser, Leung, Romberg, & Yaschenko, 2002; Leung, 2001; Paik, 2004; Stevenson, 1993; Stevenson & Stigler, 1992; Stigler, Lee & Stevenson, 1987; Tsao, 2004). However, there is a dearth of studies that focus on high school students, especially in comparing those of South Korea with the United States. The purpose of this study is to fill this gap in research, and to identify the extent to which different cultural and institutional factors influence student mathematical learning. Specifically, this will be a comparative analysis between high school students in South Korea and the United States, across three context levels: national level, school organizational level (e.g., mathematics curricula), and modes of mathematical problem solving and preference (e.g., metacognition). By using available data from the PISA 2003 study, which had a focus on mathematical learning, the author employed hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) to analyze how much variation in student performance can be accounted for by various levels of contexts, and specifically examine the relationship between student modes of mathematical problem solving and preference for learning environments and their actual learning outcomes. The preliminary results indicate that the cognitive strategies and preference for learning environments share some similarities and differences across Korea and the United States. In addition, these factors are differentially associated with mathematical performance. As mentioned before, these results are based on a simple model and are amenable to change after the inclusion of country-level and other factors which have not yet been examined. However, based on these results, one could argue that significant differences exist on the use of elaboration techniques and its relationship to students' mathematical performance, as well as on the relationships between preference for cooperative or competitive learning environments and students' actual performance. This study points to the importance of more in-depth qualitative studies that will illuminate the processes in which students engage in these problem strategies, and investigate whether there could be any universal deliverables that can be ported to other learning contexts. This study also points to the importance of understanding the overarching context in which learning occurs, as societal, institutional, cultural values can influence the relationship between cognition and performance in different ways. Book excerpt: The comparative effectiveness of schools in developing countries has become the center of a lively debate. Of particular concern is the appropriate analytic method to employ when examing school effects. This paper uses a multi-level approach to examine determinants of growth in grade 8 mathematics achievement in Thailand. Results of the analysis showed that schools in Thailand were equally effective in transforming pretest scores into posttest scores, and that schools and classrooms contributed 32 percent of the variance in posttest scores. Higher levels of achievement were associated with a higher proportion of teachers qualified to teach mathematics, an enriched curriculum and frequent use of textbooks by teachers. Individual characteristics, however, contributed 68 percent of the variance, with achievement higher for boys, younger students, and children with higher educational aspirations. The model developed in the paper was able to explain most of the between school variance, but significantly less of the within school variance. The implication of these results is that schools in Thailand are much more uniform in their effects than previous research in developing countries would have suggested.
