Most of the papers were presented at The Conference in Honor of Peter Schmidt, June 30 - July 2, 2011. The conference was largely attended by his former students and one current student, who traveled from as far as Europe and Asia to honor Peter. This was a conference to celebrate Peter’s contribution to our contributions. By “our contributions” we mean the research papers that make up this Festschrift and the countless other publications by his students represented and not represented in this volume. Peter’s students may have their families to thank for much that is positive in their lives. However, if we think about it, our professional lives would not be the same without the lessons and the approaches to decision making that we learned from Peter. We spent our days together at Peter’s conference and the months since reminded of these aspects of our personalities and life goals that were enhanced, fostered, and nurtured by the very singular experiences we have had as Peter’s students. We recognized in 2011 that it was unlikely we would all be together again to celebrate such a wonderful moment in ours and Peter’s lives and pledged then to take full advantage of it. We did then, and we are now in the form of this volume.

This dissertation addresses the knowledge gap between the pressures of increased land use abroad and the underlying drivers of land use change. It argues that there is a high risk of problem shifting if EU policies to increase timber consumption are not accompanied by a monitoring system that accounts for consumption levels and provides a benchmark for sustainability.

Book excerpt: For many years countries have taken advantage of one another's experiences in formulating social policies and even in designing specific interventions. Often such transfers have occurred on a fairly casual level; sometimes greater rigor has been present. In either case, the goal has been to learn from previous experience-at least to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. In light of the promise that such intercountry transfers hold, it is somewhat surprising that so little energy has gone into careful analytic work on the behavior of households in differing countries and how they respond to various changes, especially those resulting from shifts in public policy. This lack of careful analysis was a major force that motivated The Urban Institute to establish an international studies program in 1982. This volume represents one of the early products of the collaborative efforts that this initiative has spawned. The results of the comparison of the housing markets in West Germany and the United States presented here offer examples of the type of unexpected conclusions that may emerge from careful analyses as well as more anticipated outcomes. Despite the many similarities in the economies of the United States and West Germany and the general free-market orientation of their housing sectors, the papers in this volume document important differences in the way households make decisions about their housing and the consequences of these decisions.

Seafood Choices carefully explores the decision-making process for selecting seafood by assessing the evidence on availability of specific nutrients (compared to other food sources) to obtain the greatest nutritional benefits. The book prioritizes the potential for adverse health effects from both naturally occurring and introduced toxicants in seafood; assesses evidence on the availability of specific nutrients in seafood compared to other food sources; determines the impact of modifying food choices to reduce intake of toxicants on nutrient intake and nutritional status within the U.S. population; develops a decision path for U.S. consumers to weigh their seafood choices to obtain nutritional benefits balanced against exposure risks; and identifies data gaps and recommendations for future research.
