From 1955 to 1987, minimal contacts between the two societies were fixed by painfully negotiated inter-bureaucratic agreements. But the onset of glasnost in 1987 eased, and the fall of the regime in 1991 removed, former barriers. Thousands of individuals and agencies--Russian and American, public and private--moved to satisfy pent-up Russian curiosities. Tense 'telebridges' soon yielded to Hollywood soap operas serialized on Russian TV, American rock concerts in Moscow, Russian editions of U.S. girlie magazines. Politically, meanwhile, a brief infatuation between Russian and American elites has given way to disillusion, indifference, uneasiness. It may be a good time to take stock of what has been achieved. What do Russians now know about America and Americans, and how do they know it? What do they think, and how to they think, about our culture, our society, our political institutions and foreign policy? These were the basic concerns animating this extensive fact-finding and attitudinal survey. The survey was conducted on behalf of USIA by the Moscow-based Institute for Comparative Social Research between August 9 and September 8, 1995. It involved 1,822 face-to-face interviews with Russians 15 years and older in 108 cities, towns and rural settlements. These extended from Vorkuta in the Arctic north to Astrakhan on the Caspian sea, and across Siberia (Novosibirsk, Barnaul) to Vladivostok on the Pacific; they included the 'capitals' of more than half of Russia's 89 regions and republics, among them such major cities as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Rostov-on-Don. This report presents the survey results on a Russia-wide scale, while noting, as appropriate, significant generational, educational, regional and other variations. The report starts by exploring Russians' personal experiences with Americans, the U.S. and English language, and examining their sources of information about the U.S. The report then looks in some detail at Russians' overall attitudes towards Americans as people and at their diverse reactions to various forms of American popular culture and American consumer products. The two concluding sections deal with Russians' differentiated views of American society and their somewhat contradictory reactions to U.S. foreign policy and U.S. aid."--Page 1
