A critical component necessary to the creation of multi-model neighborhoods is the inclusion of commercial uses. Historically, this was accomplished by neighborhood commercial centers that provided these uses. In contemporary development these traditional neighborhood centers have been replaced by open-air neighborhood centers. Through measurement and comparison of urban form this thesis seeks to develop a more detailed understanding of the physical functionality of neighborhood open-air centers and compare this to a traditional neighborhood center. This process will ultimately identify attributes of urban form found in neighborhood open-air centers and determine if there is differentiation in form between these centers. In addition, the specific differences of urban form found in neighborhood open-air centers and traditional centers will be identified.

In October 2002, I conducted a mail survey of middle-class homeowners in Gainesville, Florida, to determine if there were differences in sense of community and environmental attitudes, behavior, and knowledge among homeowners from three development types (Traditional, Post-war, and Neo-traditional). I also analyzed survey responses from a representative sample of middle-class homeowners in Gainesville, Florida, to explore whether sense of community and New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale scores had a relationship to other measures of environmental attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors. The Neo-traditional community had the strongest sense of community between all three development types.

Book excerpt: This paper will examine two cases where urban infill and sustainable neighborhood development converge: the Mueller redevelopment in Austin, Texas and the Stapleton redevelopment in Denver, Colorado. These projects represent significant efforts to develop sustainably in their respective cities, as well as provide prominent examples of New Urban development. The theoretical similarities between the neighborhood developments are many. However, which project does the better job of meeting the goals of sustainable urbanism? In order to address this question, the paper will begin by examining the theoretical framework of sustainable urbanism; a critical influence on both projects. The two projects will then be compared in order to assess how well they address critical goals of sustainable urbanism in practice. The comparison will be quantitatively measured using a sustainability indicators analysis in ArcGIS. The literature review will introduce the concept of sustainable urbanism. Neo-traditional development will then be examined in greater detail, with a focus on New Urbanism. From this literature, a common framework for sustainable urbanism is established. This framework will be used to arrive at a set of concrete goals for quantitative analysis. The paper identifies four goals of sustainable urbanism that will be measured: density, diversity, connectivity, and accessibility. The four critical objectives will be used to create a set of 12 spatial indicators for neighborhood sustainability. An analysis of the indicators will be calculated to compare the two sites. The paper looks to identify which of the two projects best meets the goals of sustainable urbanism. Finally, the report will examine the nuances of the projects in order to answer the question: what can the comparison can tell us about the future of the Mueller neighborhood?

In Marginal Spaces, Michael Smith has assembled case studies combining structural and historical analyses of the moves of powerful social interests to dominate social space, and the tactics and strategies various marginalized social groups employ to reclaim dominated space for their own use. A squatters' movement in Ann Arbor, Michigan, resists the adverse consequences of four decades of urban development. Book excerpt: Recognizing the importance of physical environments as a major product of an urban design process for the livability of the built environment, this study focuses on urban planning and design characteristics within three different neighborhood typologies of Basra City. The aim of the study is to support future urban developments in the city based on evidences from the association between the current qualities of neighborhood design and the computed walking minutes of residents. These characteristics are determined from reviewed literature in urban design as reliable physical environmental perceived or objectively measured qualities. The methodology of this study describes four steps of analysis such as: (1) the use of the cadastral maps of the case studies as a source of raw information for objective measurement; (2) the use of objective and subjective measures as defining indicators that are utilized from previous studies; (3) the application of defined indicators for the selected neighborhoods through a comparative analysis; and (4) the conducting of statistical analysis to reveal the influence of the defined indicators on the walking. The findings of this study have led to conclusions on the importance of design attributes to future master planning of neighborhoods especially those of the traditional neighborhood, such as the Al-Saymmar neighborhood in Basra city.
