Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarises the potential use of alternative silvicultural (harvesting) systems on the productivity of boreal mixedwood forests. Begins with an overview of the ecology of boreal mixedwoods, including physical environment, stand dynamics, and landscape ecology; then provides detailed reviews of modified clear-cutting systems (including strip cutting, patch cutting, and seed-tree cutting), shelterwood systems, and selection systems (including group selection and individual tree selection). Also briefly discusses the environmental considerations that are associated with these systems (effects on soil, water resources, wildlife, and aesthetics). Concludes with a discussion of areas of uncertainty in the application of alternative systems and the perceived problems that have limited their use in boreal mixedwoods.

Book Synopsis Ecological Regions of North America by :
Download or read book Ecological Regions of North America written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a first attempt at holistically classifying and mapping ecological regions across all three countries of the North American continent. A common analytical methodology is used to examine North American ecology at multiple scales, from large continental ecosystems to subdivisions of these that correlate more detailed physical and biological settings with human activities on two levels of successively smaller units. The volume begins with an overview of North America from an ecological perspective, concepts of ecological regionalization. This is followed by descriptions of the 15 broad ecological regions, including information on physical and biological setting and human activities. The final section presents case studies in applications of the ecological characterization methodology to environmental issues. The appendix includes a list of common and scientific names of selected species characteristic of the ecological regions.

Book Synopsis Field Guide to Ecosites of Northern Alberta by : John David Beckingham
Download or read book Field Guide to Ecosites of Northern Alberta written by John David Beckingham and published by Canadian Forest Service. This book was released on 1996 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ecological classification system was developed for Northern Alberta through the analysis of vegetation, soil, site, and forest productivity information. The hierarchical classification system has three levels - ecosite, ecosite phase and plant community type. Thirty-eight ecosites are described with further detail provided by subdivision into ecosite and ecosite phase and plant community type. A soil type classification system that describes 17 soil types was also developed. Management interpretations were made for drought, excess moisture, soil rutting hazard, soil compaction hazard, puddling hazard, soil erosion hazard, frost heave hazard, soil temperature limitations, vegetation competition, and windthrow hazard. Colour photos and drawings for 87 common plants of northern Alberta are presented.
Book Synopsis Mycorrhizal Mediation of Soil by : Nancy Collins Johnson
Download or read book Mycorrhizal Mediation of Soil written by Nancy Collins Johnson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycorrhizal Mediation of Soil: Fertility, Structure, and Carbon Storage offers a better understanding of mycorrhizal mediation that will help inform earth system models and subsequently improve the accuracy of global carbon model predictions. Mycorrhizas transport tremendous quantities of plant-derived carbon below ground and are increasingly recognized for their importance in the creation, structure, and function of soils. Different global carbon models vary widely in their predictions of the dynamics of the terrestrial carbon pool, ranging from a large sink to a large source. This edited book presents a unique synthesis of the influence of environmental change on mycorrhizas across a wide range of ecosystems, as well as a clear examination of new discoveries and challenges for the future, to inform land management practices that preserve or increase below ground carbon storage. - Synthesizes the abundance of research on the influence of environmental change on mycorrhizas across a wide range of ecosystems from a variety of leading international researchers - Focuses on the specific role of mycorrhizal fungi in soil processes, with an emphasis on soil development and carbon storage, including coverage of cutting-edge methods and perspectives - Includes a chapter in each section on future avenues for further study
