Book excerpt: For my research goals I addressed the theoretical importance of competition in habitat selection of 2 quails and examined the use of resources in peripheral and core areas. Methodological objectives were to determine cover and food selection of Texas bobwhite (Colinus virginianus texanus) and chestnut-bellied scaled quail (Callipepla squamata castanogastris) in southern Texas. The Welder Refuge was the core area for bobwhites. The Chaparrosa and Experiment Ranches were peripheral areas for both quails. The core population for scaled quail was located at the Killam Ranch. Available cover formed a gradient from Welder to Killam. The highest percentage of herbaceous material was on Welder, whereas the largest amount of bare ground and shrub cover was at Killam. Bobwhites and scaled quail used and preferred different cover types. Bobwhites selected dense herbaceous material, whereas scaled quail preferred sparse vegetation and a shrub overstory. Based on niche breadth estimates, both quails used a narrow range of cover types in their respective core areas and a broad range in the peripheral areas. The frequency of available food items also formed a gradient. Welder had the largest percent frequency of animal matter and of herbaceous seeds and green leaves. Killam had the highest frequency of seeds, leaves, and fleshy fruits from woody plants. Bobwhites preferred grass seeds and animal matter, whereas scaled quail selected the fruits and seeds of woody plants. Niche breadth estimates were relatively constant for each quail. Theoretically, when intraspecific competition is most intense a species selects a broad range of habitats, whereas sympatric species occupy a narrow range of resources due to interspecific competition. However, when I used niche breadth estimates to address my first goal, neither component of the habitat (cover or food) followed the anticipated pattern. Therefore, I believe competition is not the major selective force in habitat selection of quails. The generalization has been put forth that in the peripheral part of a range birds occupy their optimal habitat, whereas at the center of the range, optimal and suboptimal habitats are used. However, the core area contains an abundance of preferred habitat and a species is able to meet its life-history requirements within a narrow range of cover types. Peripheral areas supply only suboptimal habitat and in order to fulfill the species-specific needs a species must use a wide range of cover types.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern bobwhites are one of the most popular game birds in the United States. In Texas alone, nearly 100,000 hunters take to the field each fall and winter to pursue wild bobwhite quail. Texas is arguably the last remaining state with sufficient habitat to provide quail-hunting opportunities on a grand scale, and Texas ranchers with good bobwhite habitat often generate a greater proportion of their income from fees paid by quail hunters than from livestock production. Managing and expanding bobwhite habitat makes good sense economically, and it benefits the environment as well. The rangelands and woodlands of Texas that produce quail also support scores of other species of wildlife. Texas Bobwhites is a field guide to the seeds commonly eaten by northern bobwhites, as well as a handbook for conserving and improving northern bobwhite habitat. It provides identifying characteristics for the seeds of 91 species of grasses, forbs, woody plants, and succulents. Each seed description includes a close-up and a scale photo of the seed and the plant that produces it, along with a range map. Using this information, hunters can readily identify concentrations of plants that are most likely to attract quail. Landowners and rangeland managers will greatly benefit from the book's state-of-the-art guidance for habitat management and restoration, including improving habitat dominated by invasive and nonnative grasses.

Book excerpt: This book documents the biology of six species of New World quails that are native to North America north of Mexico (mountain, scaled, Gambel's, California, and Montezuma quails, and the northern bobwhite), three introduced Old World partridges (chukar, Himalayan snowcock, and gray partridge), and the introduced common (ring-necked) pheasant. Collectively, quails, partridges, and pheasants range throughout all of the continental United States and the Canadian provinces. Two of the species, the northern bobwhite and ring-necked pheasant, are the most economically important of all North American upland game birds. All of the species are hunted extensively for sport and are highly popular with naturalists, birders, and other outdoor enthusiasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this completely revised Texas A&M University Press edition, Guthery and coauthor Fidel Hernández have breathed new life into a classic work that for more than twenty years has been teaching biologists, managers, and ranchers to "think like a quail." Updated with the latest research on quail habitat management, predator control, and recent issues such as aflatoxin contamination, Hernández and Guthery help land stewards understand the optimum conditions for encouraging and sustaining quail populations while continuing to manage rangeland for cattle production. Written in a style that is entertaining and easy to read, this book is, in Guthery’s words, "meant to be kept on the dashboard of your pickup." More than 150 helpful photographs and figures, along with supporting tables, accompany the text. In his foreword to this edition of Beef, Brush, and Bobwhites, respected Texas wildlife photographer Wyman Meinzer writes of how the calls of a covey of bobwhites—or the unfortunate absence of those calls—can remind us "that wildlife and habitat conservation is directly proportional to the quality of stewardship that we bestow on the land."
