The two players opened up their respective economies to liberalization and market regulations, which led to a tectonic shift from agriculture-based economies to manufacturing and service-based economies. In this context, Comparative Development of India and China offers contemporary research on economic, technological, sectoral and sociocultural issues by highlighting the opportunities as well as vulnerabilities in the development of the two fastest growing nations in the world. It unveils the similarities of thought and practices, and explores the plethora of possibilities for collaborative effort that may serve to contribute to the prosperity and progress of both the countries. The perspectives presented by various Indian and Chinese scholars in this edited volume provide varied outlooks and insights on these two nations, albeit within a single thematic framework.

Book excerpt: The world seems to have recently discovered India and China as major players in Asia, and political and economic connections between the two countries are rapidly growing. Beyond the fashionable phenomenon, the two countries have much in common and many shared experiences. Both are developing countries with dynamic economies focused on lifting their people out of poverty. There are also differences as well, as India is a democracy while China is an autocratic state, and the speed of economic growth is much higher in India. This collection provides a comparative analysis of development-induced migration in India and China caused by urbanization and dam construction. The contributors include scholars from both countries working in both academia and consultancy positions.

Book excerpt: Industrialization supported by industrial hubs has been widely associated with structural transformation and catch-up. But while the direct economic benefits of industrial hubs are significant, their value lies first and foremost in their contribution as incubators of industrialization, production and technological capability, and innovation. The Oxford Handbook of Industrial Hubs and Economic Development adopts an interdisciplinary approach to examine the conceptual underpinnings, review empirical evidence of regions and economies, and extract pertinent lessons for policy reasearchers and practitioners on the key drivers of success and failure for industrial hubs. This Handbook illustrates the diverse and complex nature of industrial hubs and shows how they promote industrialization, economic structural transformation, and technological catch-up. It explores the implications of emerging issues and trends such as environmental protection and sustainability, technological advancement, shifts in the global economy, and urbanization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author argues that as India and China face the new challenges of the 21st century, their economies stand at crossroads of policy making. Either the two nations take the high road of further economic reforms energizing the national innovation and governance systems, or see their economic growth momentum fizzle out. The author argues that at present the Chinese economy enjoys substantial economic and policy advantages over India, in the manufacturing sector in particular. It is this sector that has the potential to wipe out unemployment, a vital social goal. The author concludes that the wide gap between India and China in per capita incomes (which gap was about zero in 1980) was only in part due to a lower population growth in China, but much more due to a greater investment effort in China. India cannot close this per capita income gap by 2020, without a faster GDP growth rate (e.g., 10 per cent per year) for which an even greater effort to raise the level of investment will have to be made. China, the author asserts, can raise or even sustain its growth rate only through new set of reforms that raise productivity and greater efficiency in use of resources.

Book excerpt: This open access book analyses intellectual property codification and innovation governance in the development of six key industries in India and China. These industries are reflective of the innovation and economic development of the two economies, or of vital importance to them: the IT Industry; the film industry; the pharmaceutical industry; plant varieties and food security; the automobile industry; and peer production and the sharing economy. The analysis extends beyond the domain of IP law, and includes economics and policy analysis. The overarching concern that cuts through all chapters is an inquiry into why certain industries have developed in one country and not in the other, including: the role that state innovation policy and/or IP policy played in such development; the nature of the state innovation policy/IP policy; and whether such policy has been causal, facilitating, crippling, co-relational, or simply irrelevant. The book asks what India and China can learn from each other, and whether there is any possibility of synergy. The book provides a real-life understanding of how IP laws interact with innovation and economic development in the six selected economic sectors in China and India. The reader can also draw lessons from the success or failure of these sectors.

Book excerpt: This volume offers an in-depth comparative analysis of FDI policies pursued by India and China since opening up. The nature, type, sources and direction of inflows to both the countries have been analysed exhaustively. It is an incisive and comprehensive work which brings to fore the key differences in their policy framework, approaches and the implementation strategies. The far reaching impact of FDI on trade, transfer of techno-logy and employment generation has been examined critically. It also explores the reasons for skewed regional distribution of FDI in both the countries. The book articulates the role played by pragmatic policy, developed infrastructure and conducive operating environment in driving massive FDI flows into China. The author convincingly advocates reorientation of Indian policies relating to development of infrastructure for export-oriented labour-intensive manufacture, labour laws regime and vesting of authority for investment approval in favour of state governments to accelerate the pace of FDI inflows. The conclusions are based on rich empirical evidence supported by statistical backup. The book contains cogent and compelling arguments and interesting insights. It will prove useful to policy planners, researchers, academicians and students of international trade.

Awakening Giants, Feet of Clay scrutinizes the phenomenal rise of both nations and demolishes the myths that have accumulated around the economic achievements of these two giants in the last quarter-century. Exploring the challenges that both countries must overcome to become true leaders in the international economy, Pranab Bardhan looks beyond short-run macroeconomic issues to examine structures, and current general performance. Full of valuable insights, Awakening Giants, Feet of Clay provides a nuanced picture of China and India's complex political economy at a time of startling global reconfiguration and change.

In many respects, this is a return to the historical norm for both countries. For much of the early modern period, China and India were global leaders in a variety of ways. In this book, prominent scholars seek to understand modern China and India through an unprecedented comparative analysis of their long histories. Using new sources, making new connections, and re-examining old assumptions, noted scholars of China and India pair up in each chapter to tackle major questions by combining their expertise. What China and India Once Were details how these two cultural giants arrived at their present state, considers their commonalities and divergences, assesses what is at stake in their comparison and, more widely, questions whether European modernity provides useful contrasts. In jointly composed chapters, contributors explore ecology, polity, gender relations, religion, literature, science and technology, and more, to provide the richest comparative account ever offered of China and India before the modern era. What China and India Once Were establishes innovative frameworks for understanding the historical and cultural roots of East and South Asia in the global context, drawing on the variety of Asian pasts to offer new ways of thinking about Asian presents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have produced an outstanding book on economic reforms in China and India. . . This book is a wealth of information on this crucial issue, thus filling this important gap in the literature on economic reform, and also adding more knowledge to the literature on the history of economic development processes in China and India. . . [this book] will be of interest to both scholars of the economic reforms and those more generally interested in the social political changes occurring there. Tulus Tambunan, Journal of Asian Business Economists Chai and Roy have produced a well-written, properly documented study of the comparative development of India and China over the last 50 years. . . The book will be useful to graduate students in Asian studies and economic development. Policy makers in other developing countries can also benefit from this account of the experiences of two major emerging economies under different economic and political systems. Recommended. Graduate, research, and professional collections. J.S. Uppal, Choice Recent acceleration of the Indian economic growth rate from 6 to 8 per cent has sparked worldwide speculation that India is about to catch up with China and become another Asian miracle economy. Economic Reform in China and India examines this prospect, reviewing the development strategies pursued by the two countries over the last 50 years in general and exploring recently introduced reform measures in particular. The culmination of many years of research by specialists in these economies, this book assesses the performance of China and India at both macro and sectoral levels (including economic, social, political and environmental aspects). It illustrates the reasons why China has outperformed India in the past and identifies the obstacles that India will face in its attempts to catch up with China. Providing solutions for China and India that can be applied to other developing countries, this book will be invaluable for researchers, academics and students focussing on economic development and Asian studies. It will also receive much attention from investors and government analysts interested in the strategic implications of the emergence of the two Asian economic giants.
