Book excerpt: The susceptibilities for second harmonic generation (SHG)x31(2) x33(2) of a new high tg polymer, 1,2-benzyl-1,2-cyclohexy l-bridged syndioregic a-cyanocinncimamide (BCSCCA) have been measured by using a Maker fringe apparatus. The BCSCCA was spin coated on a quartz substrate. The film of about 1 um thickness has shown a large birefringence before poling, thus indicating molecular alignment due to spin coating. The polar order was induced by poling the film at 215 C with the corona discharge. The SHG coefficients d33 is equal to 3.54 pm/V and dl3 = 0.95 pm/V at 532 nm. The d-coefficients are stable and show negligible decay over one month. The SHG intensities at 532, 528, 476, 403, 366 mn are also observed. A large resonance enhancement in the SHG intensity was observed inside the absorption band.

Book excerpt: The magnitude and stability of the induced dipolar orientation of a nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore doped in an amorphous polymeric matrix is investigated. The chromophores are aligned using electric field poling. The linear electro-optic (EO) Pockels effect and Second Harmonic generation (SHG) techniques are used to probe the electric field induced alignment. Both the Pockels coefficient and the second order susceptibility show a nonlinear relationship with the NLO chromophore concentration. Using a relationship based on the two level model, the Pockels coefficient is compared with the second order nonlinear susceptibility measured by SHG. The temperature dependence of the decay time constant of the SHG signal is found to follow an empirical relationship such as the Vogel-Tammen-Fulcher (VFT) equation. The decay time constant of the SHG signal is also found to be increasing with increasing chromophore concentration. This concentration dependence is interpreted as due to orientational pair correlation between chromophores, and between chromophores and polymer chains.

Book excerpt: Results of the first detailed study of the effect of isothermal annealing on the relaxation behavior of the second harmonic generation signal below Tg of nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers are presented. Lengthening of the NLO chromophore relaxation time by isothermal poling suggests a strategy for preparing a stable NLO material.

Book excerpt: An investigation of the decay of the second harmonic generation (SHG) signals from a main chain accordion and a guest/host nonlinear optical (NLO) polymer has been carried out. The shape of the decay of the SHG signal from the main chain polymer is stretched exponential with the width parameter, B, increasing with increasing, temperature. The increase in B indicates a narrowing of the distribution of relaxation times. On the other hand, the SHG decay signal from the guest/host system is found to be better described by the sum of two single exponential functions with the first short time component affected strongly by the surface change effect and the second slow component associated with the relaxation of the macroscopic polarization. The time constant of the slow component is found to be successively increasing with the poling-decay cycle and it reaches a steady state value after several cycles. The relaxation time lengthening effect is obtained both above and below T(sub g); however, the effect rapidly diminishes as the temperature is increased above T(sub g). The temperature dependence of the steady state relaxation time is not Arrhenius; the Vogel-Fulcher-Tamann equation gives a satisfactory fit to the temperature dependence data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of gaining better understanding of the orientational decay mechanisms of poled nonlinear optical polymers and to develop a predictive description of the long time scale decay was well met. We developed a new experimental technique based on electric field induced second harmonic generation in the frequency domain to probe the polymer over many decades of time. This technique is best applied near the glass transition to probe frequencies from mHz to tens of kHz. We used this technique along with others to study a variety of polymers. Applying an Adams-Gibb model to the temperature dependence of the characteristic frequency, prediction of long term behavior at any temperature based on quick measurements near the glass transition temperature is possible. We also developed a new ultrafast laser source for studying nonlinear optical susceptibilities, and contributed to the study of cross-linked polyimide materials as stable and processable hosts for poled electro-optic polymers.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymeric materials with second order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are of much interest for applications such as waveguide electrooptic modulation and frequency doubling devices. These NLO properties are presented when the chromophores are aligned in a noncentrosymmetric manner. The alignment of NLO chromophores in the poled polymers must be sufficiently stable at temperatures above 100 deg C in order to use them in practical devices. Several approaches have been adopted to enhance the temporal stability of the poled polymers. Enhanced temporal stability of second order NLO properties in several poled polymer systems has been achieved by crosslinking reactions. The resulting crosslinked network has a higher glass transition temperature and a denser matrix which prevent the aligned NLO chromophores from relaxing to a random orientation. However, slow decay of second order NLO properties at elevated temperatures was still observed in the polymers. Furthermore, the general form of the relaxation curves for the crosslinking polymers do not appear to be distinctly different from those for the guest/host systems. We have selected an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) containing aligned NLO chromophores to test these issues. An IPN is a structure in which two or more networks are physically combined. The IPN is known to be able to remarkably suppress the creep and flow phenomena in polymers. Permanent entanglement of the two polymer chains restrict their mobility which leads to a significantly more stable NLO material. In this paper, we report on the design, synthesis and characterization of an NLO active IPN ... Interpenetrating polymer network, Nonlinear optical polymer.

Book excerpt: Second harmonic generation from the spin coated films of an asymmetrically substituted polydiacethlene, namely poly((8-butoxy cardonylmethyl urethanyl) 1-(5-pyrimidyl)-octa-1,3- diyne(BPOD) is reported for the first time. The macromolecules assemble to produce the organization responsible for SHG without recourse to poling. d33 of the spin coated film (0.19-0.31 micrometers thickness) are between 0.78-0.88 pm/V without absorption correction and 3.32-5. 57 pm/V after correction. Angular and polarization dependence study of the second harmonic response suggests that the film has in-plane isotropy as a whole and the net dipole is nearly perpendicular to the film surface. Spontaneous orientation of the polymer chains during the film formation seems to be responsible for the noncentrosymmetric alignment of the polymer. SHG from the Langmuir Blodgett films are also reported. Second harmonic generation, Polydiacetylene, Spin coated films, Langmuir Blodgett films, Nonlinear optical, Polymeric materials, Aromatic substituents, SHG, PDA.
