Book Synopsis Period Batch Control by : John L. Burbidge
Download or read book Period Batch Control written by John L. Burbidge and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Period Batch Control (PBC) is Just in Time (JIT) 'Flow Control', single-cycle, Production Control method, based on a series of short standard periods, generally of one week or less. The book describes the advantages of the method. It eliminates the 'Surge effect', it reduces throughput time, stocks and stock holding costs, and it simplifies ordering, operation scheduling and 'Loading', or the control of Load and Capacity. The book describes methods for planning the system; for planning and controlling its introduction, and gives examples of its use in practice. Particular attention is paid to the time constraints such as throughput time and set-up which have to be reduced before PBC can be used. It is shown that PBC is the ideal Production Control method for use with Group Technology (GT). GT makes a major contribution to the reduction of time constraints, thus simplifying the introduction of PBC. PBC on the other hand simplifies ordering, operation scheduling and loading, greatly improving the efficiency of GT.

Book excerpt: Gavin Seah’s True Humility is today’s answer to finding true peace and balance in life. How often have we tried to seek peace through practicing a YOLO mindset, hoped for happiness in the pursuit of wanderlust, or looked to social media to strengthen our identity? These are common behaviors we engage in, sometimes without even realizing it. Inevitably, we later find ourselves in a never-ending state of frustration, anxiety, and depression. Like many in today’s culture and society, Gavin didn’t know that he was searching for happiness and meaning in the wrong places, and he became a victim of his own self-focused behaviors. He also battled the effects of bullying, racism, and ostracism from his past, experiences that affected the way he looked at the world. In True Humility, Gavin shares his personal stories, observations about life, and key takeaways to help readers understand the practice of True Humility. Through powerful insights and actionable advice, he shows us how to reclaim peace and regain the balance we need. You’ll be able to recognize and identify everyday practices in our world that are rooted in self-centered behaviors, learn about three specific moral values that can positively shape your life, discover how to embody the characteristics of True Humility, and begin to create an impact that makes everyone around you better. Book Synopsis Women as Weapons of War by : Kelly Oliver
Download or read book Women as Weapons of War written by Kelly Oliver and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-02 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Eve tempted Adam with her apple, women have been regarded as a corrupting and destructive force. The very idea that women can be used as interrogation tools, as evidenced in the infamous Abu Ghraib torture photos, plays on age-old fears of women as sexually threatening weapons, and therefore the literal explosion of women onto the war scene should come as no surprise. From the female soldiers involved in Abu Ghraib to Palestinian women suicide bombers, women and their bodies have become powerful weapons in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. In Women as Weapons of War, Kelly Oliver reveals how the media and the administration frequently use metaphors of weaponry to describe women and female sexuality and forge a deliberate link between notions of vulnerability and images of violence. Focusing specifically on the U.S. campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, Oliver analyzes contemporary discourse surrounding women, sex, and gender and the use of women to justify America's decision to go to war. For example, the administration's call to liberate "women of cover," suggesting a woman's right to bare arms is a sign of freedom and progress. Oliver also considers what forms of cultural meaning, or lack of meaning, could cause both the guiltlessness demonstrated by female soldiers at Abu Ghraib and the profound commitment to death made by suicide bombers. She examines the pleasure taken in violence and the passion for death exhibited by these women and what kind of contexts created them. In conclusion, Oliver diagnoses our cultural fascination with sex, violence, and death and its relationship with live news coverage and embedded reporting, which naturalizes horrific events and stymies critical reflection. This process, she argues, further compromises the borders between fantasy and reality, fueling a kind of paranoid patriotism that results in extreme forms of violence.
Book Synopsis Picturing Pity by : Marianne Gullestad
Download or read book Picturing Pity written by Marianne Gullestad and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picturing Pity is the first full length monograph on missionary photography. Empirically, it is based on an in-depth analysis of the published photographs taken by Norwegian evangelical missionaries in Northern Cameroon from the early nineteen twenties, at the beginning of their activities in this region, and until today. Being part of a large international movement, Norway sent out more missionaries per capita than any other country in Europe. Marianne Gullestad's main contention is that the need to continuously justify their activities to donors in Europe has led to the creation and maintenance of specific ways of portraying Africans. The missionary visual rhetoric is both based on earlier visualizations and has over time established its own conventions which can now also be traced within secular fields of activity such as international development agencies, foreign policy, human relief organizations and the mass media. Picturing Pity takes part in the present "pictorial turn" in academic teaching and research, constituting visual images as an exciting site of conversation across disciplinary lines.

Book Synopsis Self-advocacy in the Lives of People with Learning Difficulties by : Dan Goodley
Download or read book Self-advocacy in the Lives of People with Learning Difficulties written by Dan Goodley and published by Disability, Human Rights, and. This book was released on 2000 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do people with the label of learning difficulties challenge disabling environments?* What role can professionals play in supporting such challenges?* How do self-advocacy groups contribute to disability politics and the development of theories of disability? This timely book sets out to answer these questions for students, teachers and practitioners working in the field. It examines self-advocacy in the lives of people with learning difficulties. The term 'learning difficulties' is used to describe people who have been labelled at some point in their lives as requiring specialist 'mental handicap services'. Learning difficulties is preferred over other synonyms such as mental handicap, mental impairment or learning disabilities, because it is the term preferred by many in the self-advocacy movement (the focus of this book).Hitherto, a number of books have introduced and examined the notion of self-advocacy. This volume goes beyond these studies to offer an appraisal of self-advocacy in the lives of people with learning difficulties that is grounded in their own experiences. It redresses the dominant focus on learning difficulties as pathology or tragedy, highlighting the ways in which people so-labelled are fighting for their own human rights in a disabling society through their involvement in self-advocacy groups. It outlines a number of lessons for supporters, policy makers, professionals and service providers in relation to the resilience of self-advocates with learning difficulties and gives examples of good practice.
