Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Book excerpt: The anthrax incidents following the 9/11 terrorist attacks put the spotlight on the nation's public health agencies, placing it under an unprecedented scrutiny that added new dimensions to the complex issues considered in this report. The Future of the Public's Health in the 21st Century reaffirms the vision of Healthy People 2010, and outlines a systems approach to assuring the nation's health in practice, research, and policy. This approach focuses on joining the unique resources and perspectives of diverse sectors and entities and challenges these groups to work in a concerted, strategic way to promote and protect the public's health. Focusing on diverse partnerships as the framework for public health, the book discusses: The need for a shift from an individual to a population-based approach in practice, research, policy, and community engagement. The status of the governmental public health infrastructure and what needs to be improved, including its interface with the health care delivery system. The roles nongovernment actors, such as academia, business, local communities and the media can play in creating a healthy nation. Providing an accessible analysis, this book will be important to public health policy-makers and practitioners, business and community leaders, health advocates, educators and journalists.

Book Synopsis Legal Foundations of Land Use Planning by : Jerome G. Rose
Download or read book Legal Foundations of Land Use Planning written by Jerome G. Rose and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban planning is a community process, the purpose of which is to develop and implement a plan for achieving community goals and objectives. In this process, planners employ a variety of disciplines, including law. However, the law is only an instrument of urban planning, and cannot solve all urban problems or meet all social needs. The ability of the legal system to implement the planning process is limited by philosophical, historical, and constitutional constraints. Jurisprudence is concerned with societal values and relationships that limit the effectiveness of the law as an instrument of urban planning. When law is definite and certain, freedom is enhanced within the boundaries created by the law. This doctrine of Anglo-American law imposes an obligation on courts to be guided by prior judicial decision or precedents and, when deciding similar matters, to follow the previously established rule unless the case is distinguishable due to facts or changed social, political, or economic conditions The author focuses on seven specific areas of law in relation to land use planning: law as an instrument of planning, zoning, exclusionary zoning and managed growth, subdivision regulations, site plan review and planned unit development, eminent domain, and the transfer of development rights. Jerome G. Rose cites more than one hundred court cases, and the indexed list serves as a useful encyclopedia of land use law. This is a valuable sourcebook for all legal experts, urban planners, and government officials.

Book Synopsis Metropolis and Region by : Otis Dudley Duncan
Download or read book Metropolis and Region written by Otis Dudley Duncan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume II of a series of six on Urban and Regional Economics originally published in 1960. This study discusses the future of urban developments in America. Has they already have megapolitan belts, sprawling regions of quasi-urban settlement stretching along coast lines or major transportation routes, current concepts of the community stand to be challenged. What will remain of local government and institutions if locality ceases to have any historically recognizable form? The situations described in this book pertain to the mid-century United States of some 150 million people. What serviceable image of metropolis and region can we fashion for a country of 300 million? The prospect for such a population size by the end of the twentieth century is implicit in current growth rates, as is the channeling of much of the growth into areas now called metropolitan or in process of transfer to that class.
