Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From distinguished scholar Donna M. Mertens, this book provides a framework for making methodological decisions and conducting research and evaluations that promote social justice. The transformative paradigm has emerged from—and guides—a broad range of social and behavioral science research projects with communities that have been pushed to the margins, such as ethnic, racial, and sexual minority group members and children and adults with disabilities. Mertens shows how to formulate research questions based on community needs, develop researcher–community partnerships grounded in trust and respect, and skillfully apply quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods data collection strategies. Practical aspects of analyzing and reporting results are addressed, and numerous sample studies are presented. Student- and Instructors-Friendly Features Include: *Commentary on the sample studies that explains what makes them transformative. *Explanations of key concepts related to oppression, social justice, and the role of research and evaluation. *Questions for Thought to stimulate critical self-reflection and discussion. *Advance chapter organizers and chapter summaries.

Book excerpt: Focused on increasing the credibility of research and evaluation, the Fourth Edition of Donna M. Mertens’s comprehensive Research and Evaluation in Education and Psychology: Integrating Diversity with Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Methods incorporates the viewpoints of various research paradigms into its descriptions of these methods. Providing specific advice on conducting research in culturally complex communities, the new edition has been updated to align with the American Psychological Association and the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education accreditation requirements. Approximately sixty percent of the content in the Fourth Edition is new, updated with numerous contemporary examples, making this book one of the most comprehensive, accessible, and practical methods books available. Praise for the previous edition: “The organization of the text reflects the author’s intent, philosophy, and objectives . . . [Mertens] clearly presents approaches, descriptions, and many examples useful in conducting studies; she is to be commended for the thoroughness of her work.” —Frank D. Adams, Wayne State College “Excellent descriptions, definitions, examples, and narrative about social science theory and the various paradigms. Mertens’ use [of] a wide variety of social identities to provide her examples makes the text inclusive of a variety of diverse identities. It is also useful to see the differences between [research and evaluation] and to select methods appropriate to the intention of the inquiry.” —Katrina L. Rodriguez, University of Northern Colorado

Many have developed policies to address the sustainability of their music practices. On the eve of its twentieth anniversary of the Convention, 14 experts were invited to reflect on two decades of approaching music as Intangible Cultural Heritage. In introducing the contributions to this volume, this chapter introduces the genesis of the Convention, its most prominent features, its workings and successes, and the challenges that have arisen from using this framework to address threats to music sustainability worldwide"--

This book was released on 2024-06-05 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the JEE mission in early December 2023, capacities in 19 technical areas for Armenia were evaluated through a peer-to-peer, consultative process that brought a multi-sectoral group of national subject matter experts together with the multi-national, multi-disciplinary JEE team for a week of discussion, collaboration, and field visits. This process led to consensus on scores and priority actions across the 19 technical areas. Armenia’s commitment to strengthening its IHR core capacities is evident from the decision to undertake a second JEE. Since the first JEE was conducted in August 2016, Armenia has worked hard to develop and improve its public health capabilities and capacities. Like all countries, Armenia was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the national and local pandemic responses revealed areas that can be further strengthened, it is noteworthy that a strong and resilient health sector was able to maintain essential health services, as exemplified by the continuation of commendably high vaccination rates by the national immunization programme. The recent humanitarian crisis arising from the military conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh resulted in forced displacement of more than 100 thousand refugees with a diversity of health issues serve as a reminder for the need to maintain vigilance and be fully prepared to respond to complex emergencies that require strong collaboration between public health, security and other concerned sectors. Through a careful review of the findings of both the field visits and the plenary and bilateral technical discussions, the external team identified several cross-cutting themes and challenges that impact all 19 technical areas. In view of these findings, four recommendations are proposed.

In the past six years, the world's fishery sector has reached a turning point with global fish production reaching a plateau of approximately 100 million tons annually. While aquaculture output continued to grow, yields from capture fisheries were uneven and showed increasing signs of stagnation because of widespread overfishing and overcapitalization, ineffective management, deteriorating resource health, declining or flat global harvests, and inefficient economic and trade policies. This paper examines the role of subsidies in fisheries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) methods, now known as Participatory Learning and Action (PLA), have been extensively used in development research, action and evaluation. This book is based on the author’s decade-long intensive field experience—each method is explained by drawing on field-based illustrations. The book vividly describes the methods of PRA, highlighting the essential features as well as the application, merits and limitations of each method. Participatory Rural Appraisal: Principles, Methods and Application outlines the application of PRA methodology in areas like participatory poverty assessment, sustainable livelihood analysis, assessment of hunger, vulnerability analysis, organizational analysis, monitoring and evaluation. Separate sections on SWOT analysis and on the method of interview and dialogue are also included in the book. Besides, the author has provided guidelines for sector-wise application of PRA, which would serve as a ready reference for students and practitioners alike. A chapter on the roles of members of a PRA team is another key feature of this book, which would be immensely valuable for students, researchers and academicians working in the areas of social work, rural development, agriculture, and environmental science, and also for NGO workers and trainers and researchers in the development field.
