Book excerpt: First published in 1917, this work seeks to be an introduction to the concept of community, the term which best expresses the object which social science as such endeavours to study; it is in community, the common life, that the interests represented by the specific social sciences are bound together, made integral, and thus amenable to a more comprehensive science. Community, A Sociological Study, includes an examination on the false perspectives of community, the elements of community, the structure of community and institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. In the age of globalization and the changing welfare state, community relations are now more important than ever. What are Community Studies? gives an overview of the community studies field, with particular focus on the research methods used, and how they have evolved in recent years. Defining the key terms in the field, it outlines the history of the methods used in community studies and uses examples and case studies to illuminate the theory. This book captures the organization of modern community life and shows how current researchers are working with broader and more imaginative definitions of community. Responding to criticisms of the field, What are Community Studies? challenges our traditional notions of communities and how they are analysed. Graham Crow's text will be a vital resource to researchers in the field.

Book excerpt: First published in 1971, this was the first text on community studies which analysed the major empirical work in this field in a comparative perspective. It takes both the findings of individual studies and the research process as significant sociological data in their own right, and asks: how do we know what we know about communities?

Book Synopsis The Community in Urban Society by : Larry Lyon
Download or read book The Community in Urban Society written by Larry Lyon and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The community is more than an abstract object of theoretical inquiry. It is also a place where people live. It is difficult to determine where community research and theory merge, because the community is a unique place where theory and the real world come together. Local conditions change and new research techniques emerge. In the second edition of The Community in Urban Society, the authors solve this problem by distilling the historic and foundational theories of community, applying traditional approaches (typology, ecology, systems theory, and conflict theory) to current conditions, and exploring new and relevant theories that impact todays communities. The latest edition also examines recent and emerging technologies that facilitate examination and evaluation of the modern community condition. Updated coverage includes topics such as New Urbanism, modern network analysis methods, the urban political economy approach to community, the growth machine approach, GIS mapping, recent holistic studies, cyberspace communities, and up-to-date discussions of community indicator studies, quality of life, community power, and regime politics.
Book Synopsis Salt City and its Black Community by : S. David Stamps
Download or read book Salt City and its Black Community written by S. David Stamps and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-10 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A robust black professional class has existed in many southern cities since the nineteenth century and in large northern cities, such as Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C., since early in the twentieth century. In contrast, the black professional class in Syracuse, New York, a midsized northern industrial city, developed relatively late and struggled in its early relationship with the white community. Employing a conflict theory approach, the authors analyze the effects of black migration north, affirmative action, school integration, urban renewal, deindustrialization, political mobilization, and suburbanization on the growth and development of the black community. The authors demonstrate how competition for limited resources has fostered varying degrees of confrontation, social dispute, adjustment, and eventual change in black-white relations. Drawing upon urban surveys and quantitative research combined with personal testimony, this book offers a richly detailed and compelling portrait of a minority community, providing indispensable insights into the dynamics of community development as a historical and sociological process.
