Book Synopsis Public Health Policies in the European Union by : Walter Holland
Download or read book Public Health Policies in the European Union written by Walter Holland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume recognises that the role and status of public health in Europe has again become increasingly recognized and features contributions on various nations within the European Community. This is not only in individual countries but also in the policies of the European Union as exemplified in the Maastricht and Amsterdam Treaties. This book is a critical account of the present structures and policies of member countries and how policies have evolved within the European Commission. It describes both possible models and needs and contrasts these with the current legislative framework. It thus serves the needs of both practitioners, policy makers, policy analysts and students interested in public health and social policy developments.
Book Synopsis Evergreening Patent Exclusivity in Pharmaceutical Products by : Frantzeska Papadopoulou
Download or read book Evergreening Patent Exclusivity in Pharmaceutical Products written by Frantzeska Papadopoulou and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-23 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses 4 central pieces of EU pharmaceutical regulation: the Orphan Drugs Regulation, the Paediatric Regulation, the Supplementary Protection Certificate Regulation, and the ATMP (Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products) Regulation. These four regulatory instruments constitute focal points in the pharmaceutical industry's approach to modern business and legal strategy. Their central role is justified by the way these regulatory instruments interact with each other and with the patent system, and by the considerable impact they (as a whole) have for the evergreening of exclusive rights on pharmaceutical products. The book guides the reader through the latest case law and legislative developments and discusses how these influence strategic legal and business choices in the pharmaceutical industry. It brings to the forefront the often-overlooked significance of the legislative architecture of the EU pharmaceutical regulatory framework, and evaluates its results through the lens of the efficiency test. The book is an important resource for academics and practitioners interested in updated case law and an in-depth analysis of these four regulations. It is also important for those interested in legislative studies, evaluation of legislation and a critical approach to legislative architecture.

Book Synopsis The Problem of Herbal Medicines Legal Status by : José Luis Valverde
Download or read book The Problem of Herbal Medicines Legal Status written by José Luis Valverde and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main problem in the use of medicinal plants, discussed in this book, is that citizens are being persuaded that herbal medicine is based on its low or even absent toxicology. A good efficacy is assumed as self-evident, and therapeutic benefit without risks is expected. Many users prefer natural medicine instead of synthetic remedies. However, the number of reports on unwanted side effects of phytomedicines increased in the last years. In some instances, a lack of pharmaceutical quality was found. The unqualified recommendation of herbal medicines may represent a considerable risk to the user. The use of a herbal remedy with unproven efficacy can represent a risk for the user when a more effective and necessary treatment will therefore be stopped or omitted. These circumstances must be taken into account by the governments, inspection services, the doctors and the judges. The present approach to herbal medicines and fraud with these products do not receive the necessary punishment because it is believed that if the product does not have any therapeutic property, it cannot entail any harm either.

Book Synopsis EU Health Systems and Distributive Justice by : Danielle Da Costa Leite Borges
Download or read book EU Health Systems and Distributive Justice written by Danielle Da Costa Leite Borges and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EU Health Systems and Distributive Justice uses theories of distributive justice to examine tensions created by the application of the Internal Market rules to the provision of health care services within the European Union. Using the concepts and principles embedded in the theories of egalitarianism and libertarianism, this book analyses the impact of the Internal Market rules on common values and principles shared by European health systems, such as universality, accessibility, equity and solidarity. This analysis is conducted using the specific issue of cross-border health care. This book makes innovative contributions to the study of the relationship between EU health systems and the Internal Market – it encompasses the analysis of all principles recognised by EU institutions as guiding principles of European health systems; it integrates human rights law and practice into the discussion of the EU Court of Justice’s approach to patient mobility cases; and it assesses the potential impact of the Internal Market over EU health systems through the lens of distributive justice, looking at the underlying principles of these systems that are mostly concerned with social justice. Ultimately, this is not a book on EU law and health care, but it is a book on distributive justice, health care and the principles and policies guiding European health systems.
