Book Synopsis The Commonwealth by : Patricia M. Larby
Download or read book The Commonwealth written by Patricia M. Larby and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern British Commonwealth, linking fifty countries around the world in voluntary association, cooperation, and consultation, is a unique body in world history. The area of its member countries covers a third of the globe and collectively their peoples represent a quarter of the world's total population. Though essentially different from the British Empire from which it originated, the Commonwealth shares many common historical ties with Britain. Patricia M. Larby and Harry Hannam have assembled an unrivaled body of literature to illustrate the growth of the Empire into the Commonwealth. This extensive bibliography identifies, lists, and annotates the most important publications on the development and growth of the Commonwealth; its present status and functions; and its role in education, literature, sport, and the arts and sciences. It includes its historical origins: its cooperation in economics, politics, and international issues such as the environment; and its many spheres of professional activity including medicine, law, and architecture. Strong emphasis is placed on the role of the English language in the Commonwealth and as a medium for creative literature in many disparate cultures worldwide. "The Commonwealth "appears at a time when this unique organization is on the threshold of a new era in its history. The proposals emerging from the 1991 Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting include statements on democracy and human rights; environmental affairs; and global concerns such as international crime, drug abuse, and AIDS. No previous comprehensive bibliography of the Commonwealth exists, and this volume fills a long-standing gap in the bibliographical coverage. It will be an essential reference source for libraries and scholars involved in Commonwealth studies and will be of particular interest to historians, political scientists, economists, and educators.

Book Synopsis The Missing Headlines by : Emeka Anyaoku
Download or read book The Missing Headlines written by Emeka Anyaoku and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chief Emeka Anyaoku, third Commonwealth Secretary-General and the first African holder of the office, has immense international experience and commands wide international respect, having been a key player in world diplomacy. Emeka Anyaoku has a long involvement with the Commonwealth, having been Assistant Director, and then Director of International Affairs (1966-75); Assistant Secretary-General (1975-77); and Deputy Secretary-General (1978-83 and 1984-89). His first elected term as Secretary-General began in 1990. This selection of insightful and inspirational speeches, mainly from Anyaoku's first period of office (1990-95), on major world events and themes highlights the role he has played in world affairs. It also shows the often unrecognized strength and influence of the Commonwealth in altering the course of history for the improvement of the lot and condition of mankind-particularly where deep deprivation and absence of basic human rights are involved. Emeka Anyaoku's selected speechesare grouped into a series of themes: The Changing Commonwealth; Democracy; The Commonwealth and the Making of the New South Africa; Sustainable Development; Development and Democracy in Africa; Nigeria in Transition; Peace and Security in a Pluralistic World; Toward a Common Humanity. In a context-setting introduction, Chief Anyaoku explains the choice of speeches, drawing out common threads. He also has a word about the title of the book, which reflects the "missing headlines", the often unreported aspects of the Commonwealth's work. This book will, Anyaoku hopes, 'reveal some of these "missing headlines" and encourage greater public debate on the work of the Commonwealth. As we enter the newmillennium, this book offers a major insight into key issues and emerging international concerns.

Book Synopsis KOLADE’S CANONS 3 by : Christopher Kolade
Download or read book KOLADE’S CANONS 3 written by Christopher Kolade and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kolade’s Canons are published in three volumes containing what might best be described as Christopher Kolade’s ecclesiastical declarations over the last 40 years. The volumes contain first-class materials, based on highly cherished African values with foundations in universal principles, from a first-class mind. This volume, Kolade’s Canons 3, is devoted entirely to Broadcasting, Christopher Kolade’s second career start up. In the first volume, Kolade’s Canons 1, he focuses on People, Leadership and Management, and directs readers to management and leadership principles which, if put into practice can lead to the transformation of individuals, enterprises and nations. The second volume, Kolade’s Canons 2, focuses on Business and Economy, Nation Building and Ethics. Without sound ethics builders of lives, organisations or nations build on a false foundation. The volumes are not textbooks but a collection of a refined gentleman’s speeches and teachings. They provide teachers, students, policy makers and policy executors deep insights to think and talk about, as well as test in the arena of practice. The earliest papers date back 40 years, yet they remain relevant because they are principles-based; and because Dr Kolade was also thinking for future generations.

Book Synopsis Old Links and New Ties by : David Howell
Download or read book Old Links and New Ties written by David Howell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an international landscape, where emerging newly empowered states are projecting economic and political challenges from Asia, Africa and Latin America, countries like Britain have to redefine roles for themselves in a new order that has reshaped the world. These new roles, as envisaged by David Howell, will rely far more on connectivities and fluid networks than on geographically defined blocs. How will Britain fare in this entirely new international landscape? With power and influence shifting to the developing world, and with a growing network of hyper-connections and communications between nations, Britain is already fundamentally repositioned. In this context, Howell presents a unique solution: engage with and re-energise the existing Commonwealth network of nations which is bound together by history and cultural connections. Emphasising the importance of soft power in the digital age, the author argues against the restrictions posed by traditional blocs and for the dynamism which Commonwealth linkages offer. Challenging traditionally accepted economic and political theories, Howell presents a unique new perspective on international and diplomatic relations in the twenty-first century.
Book Synopsis Guiana and the Shadows of Empire by : Joshua R. Hyles
Download or read book Guiana and the Shadows of Empire written by Joshua R. Hyles and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of the three Guianas, now known as Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. Though histories of each of the countries exist, this is the first work in a century to consider the three countries as a group, and thus the first to present the history of all three as a comparative and overarching study. Special emphasis has been given to the story of how each colony was administered by Britain, the Netherlands, and France respectively, and how these differing colonial administrative policies have given rise to three vastly different cultures. Because the geographical area of the Guianas is relatively small, the indigenous population at the time of contact was relatively uniform across the area, and the external pressures on the three colonies over their histories exhibited significant similarities, the book presents the Guianas as an ideal laboratory in which to study the effects of imperialism and cultural assimilation practices. The book also briefly considers the present political and cultural status of the three polities and makes some projections about their possible futures. In all, the book presents a complete history from prehistory until the present day covering the entirety of the Guianas region, relating a colorful history from a little-studied corner of the world.
