Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Sense Didactics Arrangement or subjects. - It is proper here to call attention to the arrangement chosen for the subject matter in the different chapters. This volume is designed as a counselor, which teachers can keep on their desks, and to which they can refer at odd moments, as they have time or as occasion suggests. While there is a common vein of thought and purpose easily traced, running through the entire book, each chapter has a character of its own; it stands out by itself, and is intended to meet an individual purpose. Thus, any teacher can select the chapter which seems to meet personal or present necessities, and defer read ing the others until a more opportune time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Sense in Teaching Modern Languages: An Address Read Before the Schoolmasters' Association of New York and Vicinity, Dec. 13, 1894 F I were to follow the plan Of the Old-time sermon-makers, I should naturally' speak on this subject under three heads 1) Common Sense, (2) Teaching, and (3) Modern Languages. Under the first head, however, nobody can tell another person anything, and under the second it is not likely that I can tell you a great deal. Still, before I begin to talk On the subject about which I hope I can tell you something, I wish to touch upon the other two, in order to make clear my starting point. A few years ago I got from a man who seems to have been more popular then than now, a sort Of formula which has been a very useful part Of my mental furniture ever since, and expresses as well as anything my conception of what common sense means. I refer to the famous sentence, It is a condition and not a theory which confronts us. In ninety-nine out Of a hundred of the problems Of actual life, it is a condition and not a theory which Confronts us. And the man who has common sense is the man who is very sparing Of theories till he is sure Of all the conditions, and then applies to the conditions, from all the theories he has on the subject, those which rest on the most general and most nearly axiomatic principles. Every act Of human effort has for its Object the accomplish ment of some result by the application Of certain means under certain conditions. A state of things as it exists before the act is to be changed into one more desirable. He is most successful who has the clearest understanding of what the existing state of things is, and Of the state Of things to be. Produced by the change, and who has at his command all the means which could be used to produce the desired result, and understands their rela tions, and has common sense to apply them in the right way and at the right time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is critical thinking taught? How will the next generation cope with an ever-changing and increasingly complex world? These are questions that the Grand Strategy program at Yale seeks to address. The Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy seeks to revive the study and practice of grand strategy by devising methods to teach that subject at the graduate and undergraduate levels, by training future leaders to think about and implement grand strategies in imaginative and effective ways, and by organizing public events that emphasize the importance of grand strategy. The program defines “grand strategy” as a comprehensive plan of action, based on the calculated relationship of means to large ends. Never an exact science, grand strategy requires constant reassessment and adjustment. Flexibility is key. Traditionally believed to belong to and best-developed in the politico-military and governmental realms, the concept of grand strategy applies—and ISS believes is essential—to a broad spectrum of human activities, not least those of international institutions, non-governmental organizations, and private businesses and corporations. For fifteen years, the Grand Strategy program has been cultivating leadership skills of undergraduates and graduate students of Yale University. In Linda Kulman’s compelling book, we learn about this remarkable program from the inside, sharing the stress of the “murder boards,” the revelation of applying the classics to current geopolitical situations, and the crucial importance of fast decision-making under duress. Teaching Common Sense weaves together on-site reporting, archival research, and original survey data into an intellectual history of the Grand Strategy program.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Sense on the Color Problem No law, whether human or divine, may compel me to yield my prefer ence where I possess a right. Either may suggest, neither may con strain. Society is based upon individual preference. I prefer company to solitude. Others are in sympathy with that feeling, and a commun ity is established. I have a choice as to the kind of company which I deem preferable to solitude. Who shall say Nay, if I infringe upon no one's rights? No one may demand the privilege of my companion ship against my will. In society, as I find it, I select my associates as an individual right. Restraint is tyranny. In the public relations of citizenship in a community I find myself restricted by necessity. I waive temporarily my right in exchange for what I deem satisfactory compensation. In my business relations I am compelled to meet with those who are distasteful to me. I reserve the right to say to those with whom or for whom I labor or trade, Thus far and no farther. In public convey ances, schools, and all institutions established for the community at large, I waive individual preference. I do it voluntarily. I may not be compelled to do so. Law only says: If you will not ride with those who are distasteful to you, furnish your own conveyance. If you will not go to school with those who are distasteful to you, obtain your education some other way. To enact a statute to compel associa tion, even in public relations, would be regarded as atrocious tyranny. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every-Day Religion: Or the Common-Sense Teaching of the Bible The object of the present series of Bible Readings is to bring out, as far as possible, the common-sense teaching of the Bible in regard to every-day religion. In preparing these Lessons, I have aimed not so much to get at the doctrinal truths of our religion, as at the every-day practical common-sense principles. How to live a Christlike life in the midst of an un-Christ-like world; how to have inward peace in the midst of outward turmoil; how to see the hand of God in every-day matters, and how to accept the homely details of His will; how to be seated in heavenly places when in the drawing-room, or the kitchen, or the nursery, or the schoolroom, or the shop; when entertaining friends, or darning stockings, or selling goods, or managing affairs; how, in short, to apply the principles of our religion to our week-day lives as well as to our Sunday lives; - this is the object of these Lessons. No one, therefore, must come to them with any expectation of finding a body of doctrine or a statement of religious mysteries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common-Sense in Law In view of these obvious considerations, I should like to explain as briefly and simply as possible the main principles which underlie legal arrangements. Although the details of legal rules are complicated and technical, the Operations of the mind in the domain of law are based on common sense, and may be followed without difficulty by persons of ordinary intelligence and education. Juris prudence may be likened in this respect to political economy, which also is developed from simple general principles and yet re quires a great deal of special knowledge when it comes to particulars. In some systems nothing is said to the teacher except suggestions of different ways of doing the work, impliedly ways that are better. In some systems an elaborate list of questions has been prepared on a sheet, and the supervisor checks up the work on as many as from sixty to one hundred forty questions, marking yes or no or some qualifying word which records the supervisor's judgment and saves the labor of writing the word.
