This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the landscape in which Malawi’s two agricultural commodity exchanges (Comex) and warehouse receipts systems (WRS) operate and makes recommendations on how to improve their performance and benefits to key stakeholders. A mixed methods approach was adopted, involving semi-structured interviews with key market participants, compilation and analysis of secondary data from Malawi and other African Comex, and a review of existing literature. A review of international experience indicates that historically Comex often develop hand-in-hand with warehouse receipt systems (WRS), which help stimulate demand from off takers for standardized contracts while providing financing that increased volumes traded. In recent years, electronic trading platforms have given an impetus to the consolidation of existing Comex, and the development of regional networks of exchanges and warehousing arrangements. Nonetheless, a common reason why Comex fail is that they do no attract sufficient trading volumes to pay for their operating costs. This is often associated with default on contracts and fears of the market for commodities being cornered by a few larger traders. Of the 23 Comex in Africa, over half are still in their planning or inception stages and, with the notable exception of the agricultural futures and options traded on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, most of the remaining Comex are thinly traded and receive financial support from government and/or donors.

Book excerpt: African economies underwent a series of economic reforms in the 1980s which were largely premised on the change in the economic thinking of the time. These reforms were intended to correct the inefficiencies of the central planned economy and bring about an efficient system where prices would be determined by the market forces. The result of this was the liberalization of almost all sectors of the economy. It was generally agreed that agricultural marketing systems should be liberalized to allow the private sector to unleash the power of the market, gain efficiency in the sector, and stimulate higher production volumes and standards. Unfortunately, the market reforms secluded the farmers from the market system and this has come with far reaching impacts. The market system has exposed farmers to unimaginable market risks and has failed to address information asymmetries. Because there is no established system of market regulation and information, small farmers in Africa today live at the mercy of the shrewd market merchants. This paper explores the concept of developing commodity exchange markets in Africa as an avenue to foster human and economic development through the mirror of creative capitalism. The argument of this paper is that meaningful economic development will be achieved through developing well regulated and functioning commodity markets. The paper will further argue that despite the ongoing efforts to fight poverty, sustainable development will not be achieved without approaches geared towards the inclusion of the majority population into the market system. The paper proposes commodity market development as one of the approaches which seek to include the world's “bottom billion” into the market system.

This book was released on 2012-03-10 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the institutional, technical and market constraints as well as opportunities for smallholders, notably, emerging farmers in disadvantaged areas such as the former homelands of South Africa. Emerging farmers are previously disadvantaged black people who started or will start their business with the support of special government programs. Public support programs have been developed as part of the Black Economic Empowerment strategy of the South African government. These programs aim to improve the performance of emerging farmers. This requires, first and foremost, upgrading the emerging farmers skills by providing access to knowledge about agricultural and entrepreneurial practices. To become or to remain good farmers they also need access to suitable agricultural land and sufficient water for irrigation and for feeding their cattle. Finally, for emerging farmers to be engaged in viable farming operations, various factors need to be in place such as marketing and service institutions to give credit for agricultural inputs and investments; input markets for farm machinery, farm implements, fertilizers and quality seeds; and accessible output markets for their end products. This book develops a policy framework and potential institutional responses to unlock the relevant markets for smallholders.

Book excerpt: Smallholder Agriculture and Market Participation discusses the evolution of policies for smallholder development, including the role of value chains, and the linkages that exist with the Sustainable Development Goals. New, innovative financial mechanisms and linked initiatives are outlined, and their potential to improve the availability of financial services and reduce market transaction costs. Risk management for agricultural smallholders is covered, together with the increasing role of insura nce as a mechanism for risk management among smallholders. Empirical data are used to illustrate the more conceptual work. The last part of the book provides case studies of selected commodity value chain investments involving smallholders in Africa (Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe) and South America (Peru), implemented by FAO. The lessons concern project design and targeting, product and market analysis, regulatory issues, sustainability and improved natural resources management.

Book excerpt: The narratives of people in this booklet tell the story of how structured trade has changed lives of smallholders in Eastern Africa. It is a story of hope for millions of disadvantaged farmers and for consumers, but it is also a cautionary tale – when a trader in Nakuru lost his access to the local warehouse, the trading system collapsed, to the detriment of farmers, traders and financiers alike. Talk to farmers like those featured in this booklet and you are unlikely to hear the term ‘structured trade’ – this is the language of experts – but there is little doubt that they see how the approach brings many benefits.
Book Synopsis African Farmers, Value Chains and Agricultural Development by : Alan de Brauw
Download or read book African Farmers, Value Chains and Agricultural Development written by Alan de Brauw and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough introduction to and examination of agricultural value chains in Sub-Saharan Africa. First, the authors introduce the economic theory of agri-food value chains and value chain governance, focusing on domestic and regional trade in (and consumption of) food crops in a low-income country context. In addition to mainstream and heterodox thinking about value chain development, the book pays attention to political economy considerations. The book also reviews the empirical evidence on value chain development and performance in Africa. It adopts multiple lenses to examine agricultural value chains, zooming out from the micro level (e.g., relational contracting in a context of market imperfections) to the meso level (e.g., distributional implications of various value chain interventions, inclusion of specific social groups) and the macro level (underlying income, population and urbanization trends, volumes and prices, etc.).Furthermore, this book places value chain development in the context of a process the authors refer to as structural transformation 2.0, which refers to a process where production factors (labor, land and capital) move from low-productivity agriculture to high-productivity agriculture. Finally, throughout the book the authors interpret the evidence in light of three important debates: (i) how competitive are rural factor and product markets, and what does this imply for distribution and innovation? (ii) what role do foreign investment and factor proportions play in the development of agri-food value chains in Africa? (iii) what complementary government policies can help facilitate a process of agricultural value chain transformation, towards high-productive activities and enhancing the capacity of value chains to generate employment opportunities and food security for a growing population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief paper explores the opportunities for African banks in financing intra-African food trade, in particular using value chain financing mechanisms (also called structured financing techniques). Value chain financing is used widely in the continent’s agricultural trade, but mostly for exports to and imports from other parts of the world, not for intra-African trade.
Book Synopsis The Development of Organized Commodity Exchanges in Africa by : Heinz Zimmermann
Download or read book The Development of Organized Commodity Exchanges in Africa written by Heinz Zimmermann and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the failure of international commodity price stabilization programs, the development of commodity futures exchanges has been popularized by economists and international agencies. Based on the experience and the history of commodity trading, the successful development of organized, standardized exchanges must be necessarily paired with steps towards improving the basic and financial infrastructure of countries. These improvements are all the more important as they help to improve food security, a major challenge in the upcoming demographic transition of sub-Saharan African societies. However, the outright launch of futures markets might be an excessive first step for most countries.
