Download or read book Visible Histories written by Suzanne Mackenzie and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1989 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there has been growing interest in assimilating women's experience into the social record of human history, relatively few studies have examined the environments women have built and changed in creating history. Through an examination of the process of environmental change as an important part of gender relations and socio-economic activity, Suzanne Mackenzie shows how the environmental activity of women both increased the visibility of their historical creativity and altered existing environments in the resort city of Brighton, England. She documents the multitude of ways in which women changed not only themselves but also the city in which they lived during the decades between the end of the Second World War and the early 1980s.

Book Synopsis The Illusion Of Presidential Government by : Hugh Heclo
Download or read book The Illusion Of Presidential Government written by Hugh Heclo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Presidential government is an illusion. It is an image that misleads presidents no less than the media and the American public." Thus begins this realistic look at the presidency, in which nine leading presidential scholars examine how and why we are under the illusion of presidential government and ask such questions as: What is the president's actual role? What has happened to his traditional tools of executive leadership? How is the office of the president organized to deal with domestic, economic, and national security affairs? is federal regulation an area of potential power for the president? And, if "presidential government" is indeed a myth, what can be done to help the presidency play a more effective part in constitutional government? Each chapter probes a different facet of the image of presidential government by looking at the major operations of the modern presidency-from struggles with Congress for control of administrative detail to problems of managing the economy and national security. The book closes with the final report of the National Academy of Public Administration's Panel on Presidential Management. Not surprisingly, the authors do not always agree; nevertheless, they are united in the view that the managerial role of the president must be seen as a whole-and without illusions.
Book Synopsis Disjointed Pluralism by : Eric Schickler
Download or read book Disjointed Pluralism written by Eric Schickler and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1910 overthrow of "Czar" Joseph Cannon to the reforms enacted when Republicans took over the House in 1995, institutional change within the U.S. Congress has been both a product and a shaper of congressional politics. For several decades, scholars have explained this process in terms of a particular collective interest shared by members, be it partisanship, reelection worries, or policy motivations. Eric Schickler makes the case that it is actually interplay among multiple interests that determines institutional change. In the process, he explains how congressional institutions have proved remarkably adaptable and yet consistently frustrating for members and outside observers alike. Analyzing leadership, committee, and procedural restructuring in four periods (1890-1910, 1919-1932, 1937-1952, and 1970-1989), Schickler argues that coalitions promoting a wide range of member interests drive change in both the House and Senate. He shows that multiple interests determine institutional innovation within a period; that different interests are important in different periods; and, more broadly, that changes in the salient collective interests across time do not follow a simple logical or developmental sequence. Institutional development appears disjointed, as new arrangements are layered on preexisting structures intended to serve competing interests. An epilogue assesses the rise and fall of Newt Gingrich in light of these findings. Schickler's model of "disjointed pluralism" integrates rational choice theory with historical institutionalist approaches. It both complicates and advances efforts at theoretical synthesis by proposing a fuller, more nuanced understanding of institutional innovation--and thus of American political development and history.
